I like to pick at and peel my nails, don't know why, they just FEEL good when I do it. When I do it I usually put the finger in question ontop of the last joint of the index finger of my right hand and then use my right thumb to peel the nail and vice versa for the other hand, this gets frustrating when the nail of both hands are already peels and I've forced to use my feet.

My dad says I have developed a Neurosis from this, I disagree, I do it because it feels good if it didn't feel good I wouldn't do it.

I'm sure most people with a neurosis do it because it feels good to them--even if it appears painful to observers.

How funny. I just made my first serious effort to stop biting or peeling my nails about a week ago. I'm still going strong, but it's seriously one of the hardest things I've ever done. My problem is I've had the habit for so long that the nails just don't feel right unless they stop flush against my fingertips. Now I'm constantly playing with them and tapping them on things.

I mostly stopped biting my nails years ago, but I still rub my nails on my lips and teeth.

My brothers and mom do it and the sound drives me nuts. Sometimes, I wonder if its a genetic tendency.

I bite my lips. Until they bleed. I've tried to stop, covered them in balms, but I can't resist. But I know that its a symptom of my anxiety. You can measure my stress level by my lips.

Find a copy of David Sedaris' _Naked_ at a library and read "A Plague of Tics".

I just listened to an excerpt of Plague of Tics on an old, old episode of This American Life. I always like Sedaris better when he's reading it out loud.

Yeah, me too. I find reading Sedaris to be kind of frustrating, actually. His stuff is so much better when he's reading it, and strangely it's better read in person than listened to on CD.

I just read in the New Yorker about a woman who couldn't stop scratching her head - she'd keep doing it while she was sleeping, and eventually had to be hospitalized.

Never mind your nails, when are you going to stop being neurotic about excomming ulmont, as he so richly deserves? I don't see anything very complicated here: We had a treaty agreeing to hand back rebels, he didn't hand back a rebel, he should be excommed. Done. Off you go and post to that effect!

It's not particularly good but there is a short of Plague of Tics:

I've been delaying on that until I can come up with a proper sound proof response as to not seem I simply sided with you as a response to his attempted bribery.

I tried for years to stop biting my nails, to no avail. I finally "quit" when I took control of my life and eliminated poisonous people from it. I just looked down one day and realized I hadn't bitten my nails.

But, for the record, one year later it still feels weird that they are "long." I tend to cut them really short anyway.

Ok, well, third things. First, we kind of need that decision before Friday when I do the edits, and today would be good so ulmont has some warning if he gets excommed. (Or he can give back Ike, of course, but I think he's already decided he'd rather be excommed.)

Second, you are the GM. You don't have to give any reason other than "I've weighed all the arguments and in the end I think X has the better ones". Post that in red, and nobody will argue with you.

Third, if either side attempts to bribe you - and honestly, I suspect you are mis-interpreting something ulmont said; was it his joking remark (before the Scotland thing even began) about considering an attack on Byz? - then that's a really fine reason for coming down on the other side. People who think they are in the right don't try to bribe the judge, and anyway that sort of behaviour should be punished. But as I say, I think you're maligning ulmont, there. (Please don't try to convince me otherwise, this is not the place for it, and I'd rather not look through ulmont's laundry in PMs, either.)

I've tried for years to stop biting my nails, especially since my grandpa keeps telling me a story about how a friend of his when he was younger bit into a nerve and blacked out. I still don't know if it's true or a scary grandpa story, but I'm 24 and it still freaks me out.

But about two weeks ago I just stopped biting them. I lost all interest in it. It was pretty startling. About a week ago though, they'd grown really long and I found the trouble of managing them far too annoying after a life of not having to deal with it...so I bit them back down. I'm debating buying a nail file, but that seems girly. They just grow so freakishly fast.

You might get yourself into trouble with that mindset. Lots of people do things they shouldn't because it feels good to them.

Go buy a set of nail clippers, There is nothing girlie about it.

And anyhow there are plenty of other thing you can use to cut you nails: wire snips, belt sanders, and pocket knives are all things I have used.

Agreed, just clip your nails every once in awhile, especially when they they start to bug you. There is a definite length of nail that I just don't abide by and can do little else until they are taken care of.

Other habits though:
I tap my leg constantly, with or without caffeine in my system. And my tongue takes a battering since I chew on it every few minutes. This is a trait I noticed in my mother so I'll blame her if you don't mind.

That was a FASCINATING article btw. That the brain to some extent creates it's own reality is not a concept I had heard before.

Also you should have mentioned that the woman woke up with green fluid dripping down her face and upon examination at the hospital, was rushed to surgery, as she had scratched completely through her skull and into her brain.

[Eek!]

The use of mirror therapy to treat phantom limb syndrome was really cool.

To BlackBlade: Eeeeeeewwwwwwwwww!!!!!!

No he should not have mentioned that!

The scariest part for me, BB, was of course when next week I developed my own head-itch.
