Hatrack gift exchange

Everyone who signs up will be giving and receiving a gift. It’s lots of fun, last year we had 80 entries, let's make the 2007 goal 100 gifts given and recieved.

Gifts: Please spend close to $15, absolutely no more than $30. Hatrack Festivus will gladly act as a go between for people who aren’t sure what to get.

November 16th: Deadline to sign up
To sign up please email hatrackfestivus@gmail.com with your mailing address, intent to participate, and special requests (only from your country, no college students, allergies). If you are a college student, include both addresses just in case, or just the home one if that’s what you want. If you have some special situation like you are leaving for a mission, or traveling most of the holiday, you can still participate, just let us all know.

November 17th: Everyone will receive an email with their match. Please reply to that email as soon as possible after you get it.

December 1st: Mail gifts to college students (yes that will be listed in your info)
College students, if that date is too late please let me know.

December 12th: All presents must be mailed. When you have mailed your present please email hatrackfestivus@gmail.com again.

I'm going to try to have just two threads this year, so let's do the What I want in here, and the What I got later.

Please tell your gender, approximate age, serious allergies (latex, scents, nuts, other foods), favorite colors, collections, any other info you think is fun.

Another note, please do not deliver gifts in person without prior permission from me (I'll check it with the recipient). This created quite a bit of drama last year for a recipient and her family.

23(on inauguration day), female
I'm mildly sensitive to scents, though I love all things girly.
My favorite colors are purple, pink, and black. I am very into yarn, fabric, ethnic textiles, fiber animals, childrens books (future teacher), horses, dark chocolate, and you.

I've never participated in the Hatrack Gift Exchange - mainly because I never had my act together in college. But I'm excited to do it this year!

Female, 23, no allergies.
My favorite colors are green & red & jewel/autumn tones. I'm a big hiker & backpacker, love my two dogs - a male Malamute & female GSD mix (please no figurines or plates with dogs on them or other such things, though [Smile] ), like all baked goods and candy, enjoy cooking, and like to read, especially science fiction, YA, and popular nonfiction on academic-y subjects.

What is it with the 23-year-old women all posting at once? [Wink]

I don't have food allergies. Don't send me a cat, though.

I like blue and purple. I'm generally not into really girly things. I love reading science fiction and fantasy. I like to try a variety of foods, especially if that food is dark chocolate. I don't care for coffee or alcohol. Some of my hobbies are photography, origami, and cooking. I love all things sciency.

Does it help that I lied saying I'm 23? I really won't be until after the exchange is over.

I'm 25, female. I have a lot of pretty severe allergies, so these restrictions will apply to everyone in my family. No animal fibers of any kind, synthetic, cotton or linen only; no lotions, perfumes, scented candles, or anything else scented, due to an allergy to rubbing alcohol and many flowers. Also no papers or anything else containing flower petals. We're LDS, no coffee, tea, alcohol (or I guess tobacco) in anything. No small or sharp objects unsuitable for children under 3 since Bridget gets into everything.

My favorite color is green and I also like blue and purple. I'm not into pink. My favorite color to wear is navy blue (very flattering.) My hobbies don't really make for good gift-giving (I'm into car seat safety and having babies, for instance...) but I'll like just about anything you send me. [Smile] I do like to cook, love to read, enjoy looking at art though I'm no good at making it, love local or international artsy things. I collect little containers and boxes but my husband doesn't want you to send me any more... Whatever you send me will be liked, I'm sure (as long as it's not barbeque sauce-- I can't stand anything smoked. [Wink] ) Or you could, you know, actually read my posts for ideas. [Wink] [Razz]

I'll make KPC fill out his and drag the kids in for interviews on what they like ASAP.

This is kq typing for HRH. Same restrictions apply: No animal fibers of any kind, synthetic, cotton or linen only; no lotions, perfumes, scented candles, or anything else scented, due to an allergy to rubbing alcohol and many flowers. Also no papers or anything else containing flower petals. We're LDS, no coffee, tea, alcohol (or I guess tobacco) in anything. No small or sharp objects unsuitable for children under 3.

Female, 2 1/2.

Favorite color: pink, also purple, anything girly.

I like babies, dogs, kitties, fishies, teddy bears. Fishies live in water. I like eat treats. I like burritos and lemonade and apple pie pizza. (Note from kq: that means pineapple pizza.) I like firework.

I don't like scary noises.

(Another note from kq: if you need help figuring out what she'd like or not like, feel free to ask me since she's not being much help!)

I am a girl. I am 4 years old. (Note from kq: she'll be 5 in April.)

I like to draw. I like to read. I like to eat dinner. I like to hold babies. I like candy (note from kq: no hard candy please, chocolate ok.) I like all animals. I like doggies, I like kitties, but only if they're nice doggies or kitties. I like to dress up and play with my friends.

I don't like scary sounds or scary shadows or any scary things. I don't like scary monsters. I don't like snails or worms or snakes.

(Note from kq: again, feel free to ask me if she would or wouldn't like something.)

Male, 28 (will be 29 on Dec. 28.) Also no papers or anything else containing flower petals. We're LDS, no coffee, tea, alcohol (or I guess tobacco) in anything. Likes: reading, sports (Dallas and Texas teams preferred), eating, Star Wars, Stargate (sexy pictures of Amanda Tapping happily accepted. Just kidding! Kind of.) I'm not picky. I'd really be happy with anything. No dislikes so to speak. Favorite color is blue, also like dark red and forest green.

Age: 24. I think. I'm pretty sure.
Gender: Female. This one I'm definite on. [Wink]
Allergies: None known. If you can find one, I'll be pretty impressed.
Other notes: I'll consume pretty much anything except raw tomatoes. I like reading, movies, long walks on the beach, candlelit dinners, the cute boy who lives in the next building... Oh. Right. I like most colors except pink - most of my place is done in blues and browns, if that helps. I used to collect barf bags, but left that behind; my current collections entail mostly of football ticket stubs from games I've attended (or other sports, but mostly football). I knit on occasion, but it's very spurt-ish. Most of all, I really like local gifts or ones that tell stories or are just plain cool. [Big Grin]

Breyer, are there any restrictions on who can participate? Do participants have to have a certain number of posts? I just kind of sucks for someone to get a newbie that won't stick around or be reliable enough to send a gift.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Last year I think the restriction was 100 posts, participated last year, a family member of someone who participated last year, OR have someone who will vouch for you (and be responsible for sending your gift if you flake out.) I think that was a good system.

Posted by Valentine014 (Member # 5981) on :

I do too.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

That will work, at this point the only people new to the exchange have been on the forums for years.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Should that go in the first post then? [Smile]

Woman, 36
I love chocolate, coffee, cheese, Star Trek, vampires, soap, and yarn.
I am allergic to chemical scents ( but not natural essential oils).
I love green and black.
I love trying local foods that are not fish.
I have a small cluttered house so tchotchkes are not ideal for me.
I don't like "girly" colours.
Oh, and I am OK with liquer content in things.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Please don't mail fish unless it is specifically asked for.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

If someone wants to send me smoked salmon I'm not opposed to that. Otherwise I can't think of fish I would want to get in the mail. [Eek!]

Tuna and unsmoked salmon wouldn't be awful, otherwise ick!

Actually I don't like tuna or salmon at all, but I can imagine them being almost ok.

Breyer, is there any chance of upping the gift limit? It's been $10-20 since it started, years ago, and inflation has caught up. I've never been one for handmade gifts, and I don't want to send people crap. [Wink]

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I want others to reply to that, because I likely will be doing something handmade, so my view is skewed. I'm not opposed, others might be.

I'm fine with upping the (upper) limit. Handmade stuff is fantastic but not feasible for everyone, and as Tom said, inflation has caught up with us.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

How high do you want it, and do you want the ten standard changed or the 20?

Also, Jhai you still need to email.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I don't think the upper limit should be much higher than 25, and the lower should remain 10. Half the fun for me is finding nice bargains or thinking up meaningful ways to spend 10 dollars.

And the price of shipping has gone up as well. Keeping it low ensures the most people have a chance to participate (students, etc. on tight budgets.)

So for us, we really do stick to 10-15 in most cases. I think of the 3 years (?) we've done it, one person has gone over $14, once.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I'm pretty sure you've done it 4 times, the rest of your family less. I know this is year 5 for me, I think 6 maybe 7 for the forum.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Yeah, I think only I did it the first year. It was one of the kids that went over, a few years ago. Anyway, we enjoy trying to stick to 10-15. [Smile]

Age: 23
Gender: Female
Collections: Rubber duckies - the odder the better
Colors: Gray. I know its weird but I think its a really mysterious but elegant color. Or purple.
Restrictions: Preferably nothing floral scented. I don't mind scented gifts, just not flowery-smells.

Likes: All sorts of sweet and tasty goodies (can contain alcohol). Love books of all types with the exception of scifi/fantasy which I tend to be picky about. I am, however, completely open on movies. I am hoping to move to Japan next year assuming I finish school so anything related to Japan would be great motivation. My biggest hobby right now is my karate. Whoever gets me is welcome to be as creative and as quirky as they want!

Can I participate?

If so...

Age: Less than 17
Gender: Male
No allergies
Colors: purple, or orange

Likes: Cheap old computer games. Sweets, preferably chocolate. Books I don't like biography's, fantasy, scifi, manga, comics (marvel and Image/Icon)

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

T:man, one rule we've had in the past is that if you're under 18 you need your parent's permission to participate. Please get your parent's permission before giving out your address.

22, female, no allergies, but I'm LDS, so the usual restrictions apply.

my favorite color is green, and I collect stickers. I also love books and theatre, but the thing I've loved most in that past was getting to know more about my gifter, so I'd love something that tells me about you!

Male, 22, no allergies, favorite color: green. I collect books, movies, posters (specifically science fiction), love tea, coffee, beer, and to cook (mostly vegetarian), and grow plants.

And I would vote to raise the upper limit to about $25. I'm not very good at making things, and had trouble last year keeping within the limit. Lower limit is good at around $10.

Name: Niki
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Allergies: Smelly lotions and candles.

Likes: Books and movies (favorite is apocalyptic fiction). Handmade stuff, anything from your local area. Alcohol is yum.

Dislikes: Religious stuff. Beef or pork. Dark chocolate.

About me: I am a girly-girl. I just got married this year. I also graduated this year with a degree in Nonprofit Administration (a donation to a charity for me would be very cool) and am now a public health grad student. I love to cook and bake. My newest hobby is making photo albums on Blurb (basically scrapbooking for the tech saavy).

I'm 43 and a woman. Allergies are inconsequential, but I'll let you know my likes and dislikes, to make it easier to pick a gift for me.

I don't much care for inspirational plaques or scented candles, but I do like coffee mugs and coffee-flavored coffee -- not the vanilla, hazelnut, raspberry, cinnamon-flavored coffee (as long as it is kosher).

I'm a kosher-observant Jew (and also, I really ought to lose more weight), so it is probably for the best to avoid food gifts. I mean, even if the chocolate is totally kosher and totally delicious, I still ought to avoid it, right? However, I do like to cook, so a neat cookbook or book about food would be cool. Or some kind of kitchenware stuff. For someone who's been married for over 20 years, my kitchen is amazingly poorly stocked with gear. It seems to be getting more and more minimalist every year. At this point, I don't even have measuring cups and spoons -- I use my teaspoons and teacups as approximate measures, or just eyeball things. Knife and cutting board are as high-tech as it's getting.

I am perpetually chilly, and would love to receive mittens, gloves or scarves. Especially if you are the crafty type of person who can make these. Colors? Black, red, purple or earth tones are all good. Green doesn't figure in my color palate.

Costume jewelry is a right on! I always wear earrings and/or necklaces, or a neat pin, and almost all my favorite things are gifts from other people (I guess because I don't treat myself to that sort of thing very often). When I wear something that someone gave me, I always remember them when I put it on, and mention them when I earn a compliment, so that's a nice way for me to remember you all year long. I have pierced ears.

I don't much like religious-themed or kitten- and puppy-themed stuff. I like to read, though, and if you have a favorite author or poet that you'd like to share with me, that would be nice. In fact, if you give me something to read, I promise to review it on Goodreads.

More than anything, though, I'm interested in you. If you want to make a mix CD to share some of your favorite music with me, I'd really like that. If you do crafts, I'd like to see a sample of your work. If you come from an interesting, exotic corner of the world (or just a run-of-the-mill kind of town) and you'd like to share something special from your locale, I'd be interested.

And if none of that inspires you, you could always get me some bath oils and I'll have a lovely long soaky bath, and appreciate how good that makes me feel.

I'm 26 and Male, loving that arrangement btw [Wink]

No allergies, black and blue are my favorite colors. I like books, movies, video games, clothes, paintings, and oriental things.

I also love music. If it sounds like Jimmy Eat World I'll probably love it. I'm also a big fan of classical music, and video game music.

I'm easy to please, so if you have trouble deciding what to send me, don't lose sleep over it. If all else fails, and you just can't figure it out, send me the money you would have spent in the mail. I'll tell everybody you somehow managed to stretch the money far enough to get me a Steinway & Sons grand piano. People will be clamoring for your friendship from thence onward. This will be awesome for you until the gift exchange rolls around next year and you have to figure out how to match this years awesomeness.

This would be my first time participating, but I think I'm eligible?

I'm 24 and female. My only known allergies are to a couple of Schedule II drugs, which I hope you're not planning on sending through the mail anyway.

I like purple, green, and blue, in roughly that order. On the other hand, this means I already have a lot of things in purple, green, and blue, so if you're thinking about a scarf or something similar, you could always go wild with a color that isn't already well-represented in my collection. (I wear a lot of scarves.)

I like handmade and crafty things. I do a lot of beadwork and some collaging, and am always looking for more supplies.

Music-wise, I like Dar Williams, Thea Gilmore, Bruce Cockburn, and other soft-voiced singer-songwriters with complex lyrics, but I could also use some loud, hard-driving pop or rock to exercise to.

I LOVE wool socks, especially colorful, patterned ones.

I don't drink alcohol and I don't eat vegetables (for different reasons). Other food things could be neat.

I think that if a person is not old enough to post on Hatrack, then they shouldn't be participating in the exchange.

Okay, I'm not going to pretend I'm speaking in the abstract. Ketchup Queen, signing up your infant daughters is functionally just signing up yourself three times. I get that they'll enjoy the shopping and the present opening, but the point of the exchange is an exchange between people who post on Hatrack, to foster the community here. If someone isn't capable of being part of the community, then it is cheating the adults who want to join in on the fun to be stuck "exchanging" presents to someone not capable of posting.

If there were more babies being signed up, then the babies could all "give" to each other, but I know that some people have felt slighted about being paired with someone's kid rather than an actual Hatracker in previous years, and those are just the ones I know about. It isn't fair to them.

I think the rule about needing to have 100 posts by the actual person on Hatrack is a good rule. We should keep it to that instead of signing up pre-literate family members as well.

I think Breyer's idea that people who don't mind exchanging with a child should settle that, especially as it seems to be an opt-in sort of thing.

Hi.
Female, 25, no known allergies.
I'm really very flexible. I like homemade things, food, stuff from your home town, and the colour green. I also like red and blue and gold. I do kinda like knick-knacks, but right now I'm living small and don't really have room for them.

Actually, this year edibles are ideal, because otherwise I'm probably going to have to leave it at home after the Christmas break. No fish, please. Or anything meaty. I'm not sure why anyone would post meat, but I guess some people like jerky?

I like all sorts of music, too.

Yay, I love this season!

I participated last year but wasn't aware of all these rules! [Roll Eyes]

I'm female, 17, and I have my parents' permission to participate.

I'm a sucker for caffeine. I also love all things art (I plan to major in graphic design) and music (right now I'm into electronic / dance). I love Star Wars and the original Star Trek series. I love to go thrift-store shopping and wearing unique clothes... not a big fan of the Hollister-clone types. I'm the oldest of eleven children (no, not LDS... Catholic [Razz] ), so keep it clean and fun, please. I haven't had time to develop any allergies so no problems in that department.

I'm super excited about the exchange! [Big Grin]

katharina: you will notice I did not sign up the six month old. I only sign up the kids who want to participate when asked; they pick their own gifts for their recipients, and they have fun doing so. As you would know if you read about their earlier participation (it is not either of their first year.)

If they're not welcome I'm not welcome, and we'll all withdraw.

I'm in.
Male, 33. Not allergic to anything you're likely to send in the mail.

I'll be honest. I'm a fanboy at heart and have enough disposable income to make myself very hard to shop for; if there's something I'm likely to want, it's very likely that I purchased it within the first week of its release.

I'm a huge fan of pen-and-paper RPGs, collect Marvel and Vertigo comics, enjoy (and display) almost all forms of art except genre illustrations, and like pretty much all the music you'd expect a Neil Gaiman fan and Pitchfork reader to like.

I'm not a fan of handmade gifts, and would rather not receive food. That said, there's an exception: precisely because I'm inclined to buy myself the things I want, I like to receive gifts that strongly evoke the giver. If you believe that you are best summed-up by a hand-knitted scarf or a bar of particularly unusual chocolate, send it on. [Smile]

White Whale: We can make it work, we have so much in common! ;)

Katharina: I understand that you didn't mean to offend the Ketchup Clan, but I'd like to give my POV from the other side. I had one of the little ones last year (or the year before) to shop for and I loved the chance to get to know their whole family. I see your point, but I think as long as we're giving people the chance to say, "No, I want a grown-up," then it's not too objectionable.

As for me, I'd be fine giving to or receiving from a child (Do I still have to e-mail?)

My favorite gifts are ones that I don't particularly need or want because similarly to Tom, if I want it, I've probably bought it. And if I haven't bought, it's cause I can't afford it! So surprise me!

whoops! i thought since it was a public profile anyone could see it, didn't realize there was a minimum requirement of being a member.

alrighty...

i love computers and technology. I listen to a lot of classic rock. I read speculative fiction, and anything to do with science, religion(though i'm not religious), philosophy, the mind and brain. I have pet ferrets. I love to gamble, particularly poker. I love doing anything active outdoors. The Big Lebowski is my favorite movie. I like long walks on the beach, pink unicorns, fluffy bunnies, skittles, rainbows and butterflies.

If you mount the butterflies on something, they should ship just fine. Matchboxes work well too.

kq, no. You cannot mount butterflies on the rabbit, alive or dead.

I'd rather hear about you trying to ship a long walk on the beach and/or rainbows. Let's leave butterflies and rabbits alone.

Yay! This was so much fun last year.

I'm female, 25, and I live in Seattle.

I like ratty old sci-fi paperbacks. No LeGuin, though, as I have a zillion of those. My favorite colors are blue, purple, maroon, and deep red. I love elephants, and am currently amassing an army of Ganeshas in all forms i.e. figurines, postcards, tapestries, etc. I also love chocolate. Who doesn't?

I don't have any allergies but I really don't like things that smell strongly, or really at all. The only faint scent that I can put up with is vanilla.

I also like being surprised. Anything that means something to you or your locale would be awesome. I will try just about any food or beverage. (No sea urchin or really dark beer, please!)

Um, I think that's it. [Wink] Let me just reiterate: Yay!

I've always loved participating in this - I'm glad to see it happening again this year!

female, 31

I would prefer things without strawberries, nuts, tomatoes, alcohol, green/black tea, and coffee. I love dark chocolate, the color green (though I like lots of other colors too, just not orange or brown), cats, frogs, sewing, cooking, music, and most of all my almost one year old daughter (so you could always cheat and get something for her and I'd love it too). I like cartoons, all kinds of music, and most any kind of book.

Hello.
I want to join too.
What I love is-
Music except for most rap
Dir en grey, especially posters of them and new magazines with them on it.
Chocolate, especially dark chocolate
I'm 30, I'm allergic to perfume, but victoria secret love spell and stuff like that is nice, I love the colours blue and black and i love books, especially graphic novels. And really good young adult books. And I also love anime and random action figures too.

Guy, 41.

Allergies = perfumes and chemical-type smells. New age, jazz, rap, opera, most country.

Favorite colors -- they're all good.

I'm pretty easy to amuse. Quirky is good. Homemade stuff and local stuff are both neat. Dark chocolate is good. I'm pretty musically naive, so anything new I'm not likely to know. If it's SF/fantasy from a new author (around less than 5 years) then I probably haven't read it.

I've been doing the exchange for, what, 5 years now? and have always liked whatever I've gotten.

I don't open gifts until Xmas, so you'll have to wait to hear my ooh! and ah! appreciation post. [Smile]

Posted by anti_maven (Member # 9789) on :

After two years of cool gifts (you know who you are) and the fun of buying something interesting for under 20 USD which I woudl be willing to send, I'm in again.

I'm 36, male and completely without allergies or food restrictions (except celery, ugh, yuck).

I do however live in Spain, so any would have to suffer the rigours of transatlantic postage, so think robust...

In fact that's the only restriction really. Oh and NO spiders please.

As for what, well home made is good. Stuff from your locality (pennants are a good call) or typical things from where you live.

A mix-CD would be cool, I have broad tastes.

That's about all folks. Good luck with your present hunting; and rest assured whatever you choose, it'll be the right thing (unless it's a celery wielding tarantula).

23, female, LDS so no alcohol/tobacco/coffee

I'm an Elizabethan junkie and am fairly craft-minded, so I'm all for homemade things (I got a lovely warm scarf last year) but I'm also a fan of base materials -- fabric, ribbon, trim, beads, spinnable fiber, calligraphy materials, etc. So much the better if it's stuff thats 500 or so years out of date...

I'm a fairly picky eater but I'm trying to expand my horizons of luxury-type foods, and I *love* a good cheese, salami, lox, or any other kind of processed food that ships well. I've started exploring fancy olives, and I love chocolate, though super dark varieties tend to fall flat with me -- there's such a thing as *too* bitter.

I admit that I don't listen to a lot of music, but I have a soft spot for movie musicals, Disney/Pixar, and Bollywood.

Honestly I'm all for being surprised. Hopefully this is enough of a glimpse so you'd know what I like, but I've gotten all different things in past years that I've all loved, so go for it.

Ok - so here it goes. This is my first year, so I'm excited.

27 - female

I don't really like perfume, but don't mind things that are scented. Well, except for Lavender. My son's asthmatic and his doc says to avoid anything Lavender, so we do. (Does this actually help, who knows?)

Hmm, food wise I'm only slightly picky. I don't like most meat, tea, or raisins (or any dried fruit really.)

What I do like. Well, books (obviously) though I'm a bit behind on the books in my possession as it is. I also love card game, board games, and general family type games. I also like cute picture frames (I have a 4-almost five-year old son, so keep that in mind - no frilly pink borders). I'm also slightly addicted to random gadgets. You know, those "as seen on TV" things. Even when they don't work, they can be entertaining.

Well, Happy Holiday's everyone!

What's with 27 year old females posting at the same time? [Wink]

Female, 27

Allergies: pollen, mold, dust; better not send me cats or dogs either (unless it's a Siberian huskey) [Smile]

LDS, so the usual goes.

Favorite colors: green, orange, maroon, blue.

Love homemade and handmade stuff. I collect books and things from South East Asia and China, so if it looks Asian, I'll probably love it. I am a huge fan of ethnic music (Latin, Celtic, African, Asian, etc.)

That said, I love surprises and unexpected things. Something from your corner of the world would be absolutely awesome!

And I don't mind giving or receiving from a child.

I kinda got the idea from you and maybe banna about two years ago, plus a guy in my ward raised alpacas and made the comment that he just keeps the fleece in his garage after their yearly shearings, and he doesn't know what to do with it. Before I knew it I had my own spindle and a trash bag full o' alpaca. [Smile] . I've *just now* finished some arm warmers with hand spun wool and baby alpaca, so it's just something I do occasionally. I tried out a spinning wheel, and I really want one, but I need space and money for it first.

baby alpaca is highly pettable, I got it at a local yarn shop for my birthday last year. I think it had a bit of a learning curve, but not much (I started on corriedale, and now mostly spin merino or alpaca)

Female, 32, LDS, usual restrictions apply, but I can't imagine anyone sending me alcohol, anything coffee- or tea-related, or my own personal David Tennant anyway.

I love Doctor Who, academic studies of pop culture, Roman history, Latin, Greek, oil painting, modern art, and practical gifts. I don't like 3-dimensional non-useful things, but I love 2-dimensional non-useful things.

In other words, I don't need stuff, but I love things to hang on the wall. I love books, but I have so many that it's very hard to get me something I don't have already.

I'd rather not receive food.

I would love something from your place, where you are, and I really enjoy when it is something that means something to you, so I get to know you better.

I just want to interject at this point and say that I didn't enter this year (despite trying to enter late last year), because my wallet and cards were all stolen in Prague a few weeks ago, and since I'm living in Europe now, any gifts I bought would have to be gotten online and shipped directly to the recipient using a card I don't have... and also it would have been difficult for my match to send me a gift because of the cost of postage.

That is all. I will enter next year and give someone something authentically Czech.

If you want to get technical, alcohol isn't against the Word of Wisdom either -- drinking/consuming alcohol is against the WofW.

Likewise while David Tennant isn't against any particular commandment, Katie seems to imply that what she would likely do with her own personal David Tennant might be. Do you suppose she steal from him, bare false witness to him, covet his donkey? There are so many sinful possibilities.

It came! Thanks, breyerchic, for the fabulous clutch. Breyerchic is a talented knitter and weaver, and she made for me a fabulous felted clutch. It is the deepest shade of persimmon, square in shape, fully lined, with a zipper closure that has a mother-of-pearl fish pull. I don't know what fiber she used to knit it, but it has a wonderful, soft feel. Probably baby unicorn mane yarn, or something like it. I haven't yet decided what to keep in it, but I know that whenever I use it, I'll be thinking of you and the work you put into it.

Thanks, Sarah!

Romanylass got me a soap stone animal, some lotion (which I go through a lot faster in Wyoming than I ever did in VA, so I'm sure it will be used promtply), a bunch of organic candy, and a green scarf that was so pretty I hung it on my wall.

It was all lovely! Thank you so much!

Merino Wool with a little baby unicorn, yeah.

Bridget said, "OOOh, presents! OOOh, a game! OOOh, a books! OOOOh, kank you!" She loved the little notes on each item and wants to read the books and play the game RIGHT NOW. I'm not sure what her gifter's screen name was but she is very happy with them. [Smile]

Glad to hear that Bridget liked the package! [Smile] I was hoping that you didn't have those particular children's books. The game should be good fun for her and Emma (and other little ones), and I know it was very helpful in teaching my niece and nephew how board games work (taking turns, being responsible in putting games away properly, etc).

My package came today!! Her Royal Heinzness decorated matching aprons for me and Beanie. [Big Grin] I love them! I've been looking forward to when Beanie is big enough to help me cook (since I love to cook) and now she will have a wonderful apron to wear. She especially liked the flower patches and had to carefully touch each one. I hung Beanie's in the kitchen so she can see it while she eats her dinner (until she's big enough to wear it, which should be in a few months). Thank you so much Bridget!

Racingbird was clever enough to include gifts for the girls -- a "jingle bell," a grow-your-own-unicorn sponge, and a stuffed puppy -- that sent them into paroxysms of joy. Me, I got McCloud's Making Comics, which is the only one of his books I don't own (and which was an absolutely brilliant choice on her part.) I'm enjoying it immensely.

Thank you!

I'm glad you all liked the gifts, Tom. I thought the book looked interesting, and I wondered if you would have it.

I got my package this week, too. I loved all the little jars of honey and jams from Nebraska, and the boys were excited to get to open a present early. They were even happier when they were toy cars. [Smile]

Carrie, I've read parts of Meditations, but not the whole thing so it was a very cool pick. The book itself is an awesome edition too. thanks so much!

p.s.-thanks for the warning on the glue, i was really tempted.

I received my package from Dark as Night (whose name I didn't immediately recognize, but I found we had an interesting discussion about India 11 months ago)! She sent me a bunch of really neat things - some gorgeous red (silk?) slippers that look East-Asian-inspired, and will be very nice wearing around on our non-carpeted floors, some handmade washcloths (crocheted?) that are much appreciated (as they give me an excuse to retire our old ones as rags for cleaning dog paws), and then a beautiful, flowery Russian dish and Russian magnet that looks like one of the nesting dolls. I didn't know that Dark as Night was Russian, but I really appreciate her sharing her heritage with us. [Smile] All practical AND pretty gifts - totally the best kind!

Dear Therese,

Thank you for my new markers and my new notebook. And thank you for the cookies! I like the kitties on the notebook and my name on it so Bridget can't use it. I will share the cookies though. I promise not to eat them all myself. I love my presents and the box is pretty.

Love,

Emma

Ok, so I feel bad. I got mine what seems like ages ago, and things have been so busy I haven't gotten around to posting. Thank you VERY much Ludosti!!!

I got a full stocking this year (that my son thinks is the prettiest Christmas stocking he's ever seen). There was so much in it that I hope I can remember it all:

A book of card games (Yippee!!!)
A tin of Candy (More temptation)
Home-made Good smelling ornaments
and little backs of that good smelling stuff that I'm not going to even attempt to spell...

If I forgot anything, I'm sorry. It was all really wonderful, and so exciting! Thanks again!

That is very kind of you to share the cookies!
Merry Christmas! [Big Grin]

Love,

Therese

Awesome, Strider, I'm glad you like it! I have to admit, the rainbow of Skittles was a flash of genius - and it turning out so well was pure dumb luck. [Wink] I looked at a bunch of translations of Marcus Aurelius at bookstores and was way less than impressed with them, so seeing that one at the used bookstore was a steal. I hope you enjoy it!

Dear Darrell (Eek! I couldn't find the packaging, and now I'm not sure. I think it was Darrell, or was it someone who's name is Darrell but who's screenname isn't Darrell? ACK!)

Anyway, I love the calligraphy book I recieved. Very pretty hand (Copperplate italic), if I ever get good enough to pull it off.

Also, I think my person might recieve their gift late. I am so, so so so sorry, but it'll probably be a new years gift rather than Christmas. Hopefully the sheer awesomeness of the gift (mwahahaha) will offset its lateness.

My gift arrived today! Thank you so much, ketchupqueen!! I promptly tore it all open, grinning madly the whole time. I love the journal, it's so delicate and pretty! And the cookies and brittle are delicious and if they ask very, very nicely I might share a piece with my family. Heehee. My fiance agrees with you about peanuts, so he's probably going to steal lots of the brittle when I'm not looking. Or when I am looking. He's kind of shameless that way.

Thank you! What a great way to start my day!

Thanks Strider! I received my gift on Friday, but have been a bit busy since then. I absolutely loved it! It's like you know me or something. [Smile] I am really looking forward to listening to the Radiohead discs. I went to their show in Seattle this year, and like every other Radiohead show I've been to, it was awesome.

I am really glad you sent me Foundation because I keep putting off reading it and now I have no excuse. I know I'm going to love it, and then have to read all of the series. Well, I guess now is the time. Also thanks for your notes on House of Leaves. I'll have to reread it because it's been a few years since I last read it, and honestly I have a very vague memory of it. Other than I loved it.

Also included were a neat Christmas star ornament, some local postcards, and a really beautiful Asian influenced box. Thanks again! [Big Grin]

I'm glad you like them! My kids had fun eating the cookies and brittle, too. I hope you or someone in your family can use the tin for something when it's empty. I figured consumable was a good way to go but I just couldn't pass up that cute snowman.

I did a little post searching to help direct my ideas, I hadn't seen you mention Foundation so figured I'd give it a shot. I'm psyched you haven't read it(so my gift is useful) but shocked at the same time(have you been living in a cave?), so get to it!

I got mine!!! [Party]

It actually was delivered earlier, but I was at work, and then I left town for a couple days and finally today was able to pick it up at the post office.

My package came all the way from Spain!! With amazing treats from the anti_maven family.

I got a REALLY cool CD of various Basque music. I LOVE it!!! The CD is awesome and will be a great addition to my collection of ethnic music. It was also accompanied by a little book with lyrics and what I guessed to be stories about the places they came from. That is a perfect thing since I'm learning Spanish right now and will be having fun translating!

I also got yummy treats called Xaxu de Tolosa. Perfect little sweet bite!!! And the Christmas card was cute and creative. I love the picture of the happy pirate! [Smile]

Thanks for everything, Rich!

TH, I owe you a big apology.

I was going to email you that apology, but I didn't have your email.

Due to unforeseen problems, your gift didn't get out until late. It did go out, New Years Eve, so expect it soon.

One thing I put in there was a comedy math quiz, and I realized I left out the instructions. I'll reproduce it, with the instructions, here so you can play with something until it arrives.

Part One--Geometry.

Divide this box into 4 equal parts:
(There should be a box at the end of this question, but I am not good with the ascii box making art)

Since you didn't study for this test you know you are going to get that question wrong, so to save the teacher some time and maybe get a brownie point, you put an x in the box, which just so happens divides box into 4 equal parts.

Part two: Multiplication

2 x 9 =
3 x 9 =
4 x 9 =
5 x 9 =
6 x 9 =
7 x 9 =
8 x 9 =
9 x 9 =

Well that is another thing you didn't study. Wonder how many of these you'll get wrong? You decide to count them.

2 x 9 = 1
3 x 9 = 2
4 x 9 = 3
5 x 9 = 4
6 x 9 = 5
7 x 9 = 6
8 x 9 = 7
9 x 9 = 8

Wow, 8 wrong. But since you have problems with math, maybe you had better count them again. This time start at the bottom.

2 x 9 = 18
3 x 9 = 27
4 x 9 = 36
5 x 9 = 45
6 x 9 = 54
7 x 9 = 63
8 x 9 = 72
9 x 9 = 81

Yep, 8 more wrong.

Then the teacher comes over and gives you a 100% correct grade.

Dark Knight, when did you send it? Was it by UPS, FedEx, Mail, etc.? The reason I ask is that our mail carrier said there might be a mix up with our mail. Our Neighbor put a hold on his mail when he went on vacation and it's possible they got the house numbers mixed up. We've been getting mail, but it's possible a few things may have gotten sidetracked.

According to my sources there was a postal service mix up and you should have it by Monday or Tuesday, if not sooner. Also your gift was two parts and my wife moved one of the parts without telling me when I left to mail it. I've long since sent the first piece but I will be sending you the other piece tomorrow.

I sorta went over $30 but I couldn't help it, everything where I spent Christmas costs more than $30.

Kimono directly translates to 'thing someone wears' and is currently used to refer to traditional Japanese clothing. It doesn't actually have a specific gender connotation.

I was so confused by your comment at first...

Cure and awesome! BTW I listened to Dier En Gray today. They definitely have talent, no doubt about it. But I find their melodic songs are more enjoyable then when they employ their guttural growling and shrieking. How do their earlier cds compare to Oroboros?

Quick review: Really glad you sent me the CD!
