I am proud to be a member of Hatrack, and surrounded by multitudes of individuals who've cherished many of the same books that I have.

And just for the record...PJ is a very tolerant and fair moderator. So far as I can tell.

Sorry for the sentimentality, I just got EiE and am about to start reading.

Get out of this thread and go to my "Help me help my child" topic.

Seriously, my brain's fried and I need adult help.

I probably wouldn't even admit any of this if my brain wasn't so sizzled. It really has nothing to do with PJ being here or not.

Folks, please tone it down. I know you feel like you can get away with a little more than usual while I'm gone, but I don't want to have to lock another thread.

Well, the actor who played Senator Vreenak (yes I came up with the name from memory) also plays Peter in the audiobook versions of the Ender/Bean novels... so... there ya go.

I guess it depends on how much you value your geek cred.

"In the Pale Moonlight" is in my top five favorite DS9 episodes. Don't feel bad.

Do you prefer it to "The Visitor," (iirc)?

Yes, In the Pale Moonlight is one of the best.

Well I guess I'm in deep yogurt, cuz I didn't have a clue and am still not sure what the reference is. [Confused]

I have a hard time ordering my top five favorites. There are a lot of plot arc advancing episodes that I really like, like "The Way of the Warrior," which has a sweet battle scene at the station, along with "Call to Arms," "Favor the Bold," "Sacrifice of Angels," etc.

But then there are the episodes that just stick out as not really being a part of the larger framework, but are individually masterful vignettes. "Far Beyond the Stars" is constantly in the forefront of my thoughts when I think of the best Star Trek episodes. It follows a long tradition of Star Trek episodes speaking to cultural matters, and I think also honors sci-fi's tradition of pushing barriers in a way that other genres couldn't or wouldn't. The acting is excellent, the writing is excellent, the story is great. Sisko's soliloquay that starts off "I'm a human being dammit..." is just amazing, and Avery Brooks took it to another level. But there are a ton of fun episodes that I like too, like "Take Me Out to the Holosuite," and "The Magnificent Ferengi." So I'm never sure how to answer what the "best" episodes are. The best written? The best drama? The best funny? The best plot wise? The ones I just like to watch over and over again?

That's the problem with really good shows.

I do actually. "In the Pale Moonlight" is interesting on several levels. It's interesting to watch Garak work his behind the scenes black ops mojo, because I find Garak to be the most interesting of DS9's peripheral characters, and I was glad to see him elevated to really a main character in the later seasons. It's interesting for how it effects the long term plot arc of the war against the Dominion. It's interesting to see further exploration of a publicly cheery and moral Federation that really has a dark heart when pressed. That's part of why I like the Section 31 stuff, and why the "Siege of AR-558" are so illuminating. And of course above all there's Sisko. He's like Picard in that he tries to put his values and principles above everything else, even if it means losing. Maybe he knew what he was doing, maybe he didn't, but in the end, he justified what he was doing. I think that episode had more depth of character than many of any episode of any TV show I've ever seen.

I do like "The Visitor" though. From all the times they talk about it, I wish someone in the Star Trek pantheon of writers would actually write "Anslem." It's a sad episode in so many ways. It's great to see how Jake's life played out, but it really goes to show the bond that the Siskos had achieved in such a short time on the station. But it's just so sad to see him give up his life for this quest, and to see the constant hurt in that Ben feels every time he sees what Jake is doing and not doing and probably the guilt he feels in not being there to help him.

He said babies. I don't think he's ever specified species so I had to make some assumptions. Do you think he was actually referring to arugula?
