Last night I was studying at a local coffee shop in Denton, and two girls, young, cute, their on the UNT track team (= nice legs cute butts [Smile] ).

We talked for a while, then religion came up, and every single friend of mine has given me a rule, "Don't talk about religion or politics with ANY girls." I have a hard time following it.

Now let me preface this by saying the day before, I was driving around, decided to take a right on University street and see where it goes, I drove for a while and saw a cute little yellow Lutheran church, looked about 100 years old.

Then, across the street, I saw a MASSIVE church, 'The Bible Church', it's HUGE all stone and the size of a modern mall, and I said right then, "There you go Works Vs. Grace (conversion)".

These two girls were from that Church. They spent the next four hours trying to convert me or trying to punch holes in what I believe. They didn't have much success.

Here is a Thor rule.

Unless you provide me actual EVIDENCE, you will NEVER convince me that all sins are equal. That's pure lunacy to me and mildly insulting.

To say that Michelangelo and Hitler are equal in sin doesn't compute. To say that me looking at a girls cute butt and having naughty feelings is not the same as a man who has sex with someone else's wife, gets her pregnant and disappears.

With my lusty thoughts, I've only created pain for myself.

The other fellow has created life long pain for the Wife, the Husband, himself and any children involved.

They are not equal.

Having bad thoughts and NOT acting on them is better than having bad thoughts and them making them actions.

They agreed, but still said all sins are equal.

I mentioned that the Grace attitude types are focused on their lives and going to heaven, so they're that concerned with leaving the next generation and generations a decent world to live in.

She said...

"Why should we be concerned? Jesus is going to make it a perfect world when He returns."

Grace without works is dead, just as works without faith is dead.

I am going to go to Church with them next Sunday, and then go to the Lutheran church the one after that. I'll keep you posted.

Something tells me you're looking to know more than just their religion.

I was really hoping this would be about converting the actual Thor. Maybe missionaries knocked on the gates at Bilskirnir. Could you convince him to use his hammer for peace instead of war?

I'd like to find out more about their religion in between making out with them.

What do you think your chances are of making out with either of them?

Well, if they think all sins are equal....

Not even narrowing it down to one?

See, the story as I read it was:

"I met some hot chicks, and like, they were into some wack s***, so I was like, **** that, and like, they were like, naahhh dude. And so anyway, they were total **** teases man... messed up."

If they were into UF, a better title for this thread would be "Coveting Thor".

*derailing* You're in Denton? Home of barbed wire and the best Thai restaurant in the world?

I was once there for a week and had a very odd time [Wink]

Good luck with the church girls. I think you might be barking up the wrong tree there though...

Every time I've met a hot girl on public transportation and got to talking, it never takes more than 15 minutes before they start preaching about God.

Maybe it's me...

Uh. yeah, they started the conversation, and 4 hours later, 1/2 after the cafe had closed I said I have to go.

...but orincoro, i know you're not allowed to believe anything I say is true.

Script Jokes work well here at Hatrack. Knowing that 80% of the people here are forbidden to watch rated R movies. And Orincoro, I saw you dis tarantino. Seriously. Your opinion is invalid. If you can't respect Tarantino, it is a compliment if you don't like my stuff.

I dissed Tarantino often after seeing Death Proof (not here). If I then said that I loved your script, would your head explode?

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Thor, don't let Tarantino be your influence. He's the product of influences, not an influence himself. Creating films inspired by Tarantino will just create films at least three stages removed from a sincere emotion.

yup

Good. Because the last time anyone did a survey, I think we were at less than 40% Mormon, and not all Mormons avoid R-rated movies.

My scripts are very much my own.

I am just saying that if someone says Tarantino is a crappy filmmaker, they don't know film. Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs and both Kill Bills are great.

I lean way more Spielberg.

I can diss Tarantino because I think he's a tool, and a douche. He's also very talented, and for his work he earns my admiration, if not always my respect.

You are not on any plane with Tarantino. You are not talented in the way that he is. Your talents have yet to reveal themselves. And before you go spinning that into a compliment, I mean to say that I don't think they will, or they would do so in other facets of your creative life, and in the way you interact with people.

I am not a Mormon. I watch R rated movies.

You were the tool who sat in a cafe listening to a couple of batty teenagers for four and a half hours... so who's the one who deserves unwarranted respect on Hatrack, of all places?

I assume you mean I, Screenwrite. In which case it looks like it's been wiped. Was it that bad?

Dante I still have a copy of the first five pages, pretty good actually. His writing is really visual (of course it has to be its a movie).

As soon as you start using complete sentences. In fact, not even then. I like fragments. They're fun.

It's not that it was that bad. It just wasn't that good. And no where near as good as he proclaimed it to be.

"You were the tool who sat in a cafe listening to a couple of batty teenagers for four and a half hours.." - Orinoco

They we're very cute and sexy and one gave me a hug every time I had naughty thoughts. Orinoco, do you realize you come as the angry virgin type. You're more of a virgin than a 12 year old Mormon. Does your religion prevent you from masturbating? if not, give that a try.

I'm an athiest, if that helps you form a picture of me. I was also a virgin into my 20s, of which I am not ashamed.

That being said, I'm still not the tool who got his rocks off hugging a batty teenager who I'd never get to sleep with.

Edit: I was going to say I grew out of that kind of thing... but honestly I don't think I've ever said or done anything so desperate. And that may be saying something...

What the hell do you mean? Your not even quoting me there. There's no way I would say anything positive about that script. It sucked.

I'm pretty sure he was just pointing out that he uses complete sentences. Of course, I wouldn't brag about the grammar in the innermost quote, but that's neither here nor there.

Well...where is it?

Let's ask Schroedinger.

Posted by Orincoro (Member # 8854) on :

Ah, Mike, I get it.

T: those are sentence fragments, or fragment clauses. When you say: "pretty good actually," without adding the third person singular pronoun "it," you are using a fragment. There is nothing really appallingly wrong with fragmented sentences- they can be effective, but you should know that you are doing it.

As a general rule of thumb, sentences (or dependent/independent clauses) require a Subject, a Verb, and an Object. If you leave one of these elements out (along with a few others I won't go into), then you are most likely implying the presence of the omitted part of speech. So in "pretty good actually," you have omitted the subject and verb, which is the script, or "it is." You've included only the adjective and adverb; everyone knows what you're talking about, but the sentence is still a fragment.

Inserting "it is" after the comma would be just as bad, unless he changes the comma into a semicolon. It'd be better to use "which are"; not scintillating prose, exactly, but at least grammatically correct. (Look, ma, a fragment! [Wink] ) The worst offense IMHO is the lack of punctuation after "Dante".

*sits back and awaits the inevitable consequences of Davidson's law*

Posted by Orincoro (Member # 8854) on :

yes, I had it in mind to change it to semicolon and use a contraction, "it's." I just wrote it out that way to show how it might be made into a complete clause. As a dependent clause, "which is," followed by a comma is more appropriate.

If you are using "the first five pages," as a phrasal chunk, it would actually be singular, not plural. There is no hard and fast rule- it just depends on whether you want to refer to the pages separately or as a whole.
