Yes, there's an as-yet-unidentified problem that's causing the forum page to forward (intermittently and automatically) to a non-existent page. The webmaster has been informed.

Mahalo. I thought my computer was being squirrely again.

This kept happening....

I wondered what was wrong...

I figured it was something I was doing.

I keep going in and opening one thread at a time in new windows...I'm always up for a good challenge - reading posts has become TOO easy anyways...

I just got a new laptop. I thought it was me.

Brojack broke the forum with his new laptop. I'm telling Papa! [Taunt]

Hatrack Extreme!

In the next version, you have to do it while PJ and Tom hold you upside down by your ankles.

Hope so. I wrote the thread title in Strong Bad's voice.

heh heh heh, this makes this website much more fun....

Oo, I'm so relieved. I thought it was part of this nasty Trojan I thought I had gotten rid of.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

I don't think a trojan could randomly generate a Hatrack 404 page.

Click the "stop loading this page" button the second you see that the forum index has appeared. It will halt you before the redirect. Browse at leisure.

I finally broke down and loaded up firefox and put in the adblocker addon... and it stopped.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

It hadn't happened to me until this morning, when it happened once. Then just now it happened gazillion times in a row. I finally clicked a thread fast enough to get in.

It looks to me like it might be a problem with some of the google ads. If so, an ad blocker would probably stop it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Yup. The only time I've had the problem was when I turned AdBlock Plus off to test it.

Posted by maui babe (Member # 1894) on :

It's worse today than it was yesterday. [Frown] I don't have Firefox at work, so I guess I just have to deal with it.

Posted by Lisa (Member # 8384) on :

I just hit escape the moment I see the main page. I'm using IE6, and that stops it from forwarding. If I missed it, I just hit back and escape quickly.

Posted by scholarette (Member # 11540) on :

I used firefox and still got the 404 problem.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Firefox with AdBlock Plus?

Posted by Orincoro (Member # 8854) on :

Attention: A possible workaround found!

When loading the main forum page, allow the browser to load the threads, and then quickly cancel loading on your browser. This has been working for me on Firefox, and if it's an ad problem with the ads loading last, then it should work on all browsers.

Well, I was using the computer at work so my knowledge of what it is running is pretty limited.

Thanks! That's solving it for me. [Smile]

Darn foiled again...

I think I *might* have figured out what the problem actually is. To me it looks like ads associated with doubleclick (The ads at the bottom of the page) are randomly attempting to load the ads as if they were saved on Hatrack's web server instead of google/doubleclick. I bet if those ads get pulled out of the page source temporarily the problem will stop. And then of course contact Google ads/Doubleclick and let them know what's going on. But someone's probably figured that out already.

A vaguely similar problem stopped me from looking at CNN in IE6; the page wasn't 404-ing, but it would load all the article titles and then just freeze, waiting to load an ad that would never actually finish loading and/or executing.

(Ya really feel like there ought to be a way to make people who code ads that badly do some kind of penance...)

Like...get a different job?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

And for some reason now the escape key isn't stopping it; neither is stopping it loading.

It's still working for me...

Posted by scholarette (Member # 11540) on :

I downloaded firefox to my home computer and it is working great here (which probably means I need to update stuff at work).

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

...and now it's working again. Don't know what that was about.

The google ads are gone. I don't know if it's a temporary or a permanent fix.

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

It seems too have fixed it for me.

Thanks PJ!
