While at the grocery store today, I noticed the bargain DVD bin had this film for sale.
Well, now. Doesn't that just look like a cute little sugary fairyland of frou-frou fun?
Goofy crow. Chubby mice. And that blindingly golden field! Why, this looks like the perfect movie to bring home for the four year old to watch before his nap!
Yeah. 90 minutes of intense violence, hideous animal experimentation, murder, and drowning! They help to balance out the goofy crow and chubby mice, y'see. *pained laugh*
I think this might be the most blatant example of misleading DVD case art versus actual content I've ever seen.

This isn't about the movie's quality. (It's definitely Don Bluth's greatest work!)

I can see where you are coming from Puffy. I loved this movie as a kid and watched every chance I got (since I was a kid pre-VCR in the house common) it would come on Showtime from time to time and infact I remember faking sick from school to see it on tv once but it could be a little intense for a four year old. But then my niece gets nightmares from Mickey mouse so I think all children are different.

And I think that was one of my favorite parts. Infact, I am trying to find a copy of the book to do for a read aloud with my students (Third Graders) but can not seem to find it anywhere.

Other than some (tweaked) character names and a few general plot points, the film and book are nothing alike.
The book's excellent, though. Amazon and Barnes & Noble both carry it.
Definitely the hardest "G" rated movie I can ever recall seeing. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful. But some of the creature designs are definitely scary, as is the level of violence and intensity.

A sort of related problem. My mother doesn't see theatrical trailers very often, and she only pays half-attention to trailers on television. Either way, she saw the trailer to I am Legend, and later commented on how she would like to see it. I laughed, thinking it was a joke because she hates horror movies.
I asked her why she wanted to see it, and she said, "It looks like such a cute movie with Will Smith taking care of his dog." Turns out she was serious.
I don't think it was misleading advertising on their part, just that my mother has to pay more attention to trailers.

Nimh blew my mind as a kid. I definitely want to show it to my kids.
Jury's still out on Watership Down. Maybe wait for 12-14 on that one.

Oh, you mean when they start contorting spasmodically and all? Yeah, disturbing. Worse to me, though, was the part when she was stuck in the cage inside the house with the cat nearby. Man, that always had me on the edge of my seat, gripping whatever pillow or arm rest was closest at the time. Not really sure why now that I think about it. Huh.

Heh. Sounds like my mom, too. We were really surprised that she only jumped four or five times while watching Beowulf, actually.
I loved both Nimh and Watership Down as a young kid.

I loved that movie as a kid; rented it repeatedly 'cause I could never find it in the store. You know what else is seemingly cute but deeply disturbing? The Brave Little Toaster.

Edit: OMGOSH or the nightmare Toaster has of being dangled over a bathtub and the psychotic clown. "Run..." O_O

The scariest part of "The Brave Little Toaster" for me as a child was when Air Conditioner has his meltdown. Now I just think the Jack Nicholson impression is impressive.
Other scary scenes for me were when the appliances were in the new apartment, when Lamp had to use himself as a lightning rod, and the junkyard smasher scene.

I still have nightmares about The Secrets of NIMH. The daycare teachers used to rent it for rainy days because it looked so cute. Then they would talk in the back and not watch as I sobbed in the corner, hiding my face so the other kids didn't make fun of me. *shudders*
