Yup...he's playing Spike.

In other news, anime fans crankier than usual, for some reason. Possibly because they've been told for the thousandth time: "Hey, this sounds like a rip-off of Firefly!" [Wink]

Dammit. I was hoping you were joking.

I was hoping so much...

I wish I was joking.

Oh, man. They're gonna cast Lindsay Lohan as Faye Valentine and Paris Hilton as Ed. I just know it. [Frown]

WHAT??!?? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!
Keanu Reeves can't play Spike. He's not sufficiently spikey enough.
Urg.

I bet they won't even have Yoko Kanno doing the music... [Grumble]
Stupid no good hollywood.

They should have cast James Marsters as spike

I think that Keanu could actually pull it off.

And I'm going to resign myself to the idea that even though the live action couldn't hold a candle to the original, it could be good on its own.

When it's actually released, then I can hate it.

I'm actually not as upset about this as I probably ought to be. Maybe because I haven't really considered anyone for the role, so I can't be dissapointed it is Reeves.

Maybe he can do right by that role. A little Street Kings, a little Constantine, you have the formula for a professional badass who kind of hates his job but is too good at it to stop. But can he be cool, can he flow?

Why???!!!! [Confused] [Frown]

We do not need a big screen version of Cowboy Bebop. [Frown]

I remember Bill Murray's character in Ed Wood being baptized so he could appear in a movie, but I didn't know Keanu Reeves had to be confirmed to play Cowboy Bebop.

It's all politics, man. [Cool]

At the very least, he shouldn't have much dialogue. Spike's certainly not a character known much for words... It's just the subtle looks and Spike's complete lack of confusion that concern me about Reeves playing the part.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

spike is a 'demure, dry, laid-back wit' kind of a dude.

keanu reeves is 'keanu reeves'

can they make this work.

I think Keanu Reeves has it in him to play Spike Spiegle. He is going to have to stretch and tone up those legs like crazy though. He's also going to need to be able to shift about his center of gravity in a fundamentally different way than Neo does in The Matrix.

Any idea who would be more likely a better choice for Spike?

What? What?! I knew there were some anime-turned-live-action films in the works, but I missed this!

I don't know. As long as they give him that greenish, funky hair, he could be fine.

Yes, that will be the real test.

Hmm...maybe this guy, as I think he could pull off the 'flow' and the 'cool' if Night and Day Watch were any indication.

I think he is a great choice, not sure if they need to make a movie though.

Oh forget with Keanu/Spike... Who's going to play Faye Valentine? [Big Grin]

Posted by Wonder Dog (Member # 5691) on :

I've always thought that you need to hire a dancer (or someone with dance background) to play spike - someone tall, lean, athletic... someone who knows how to move.

I will be pleasantly shocked if Keanu does even a half-decent job of this. Spike needs to be able to go from shuffle to flow in half a second - no amount of attitude or styling will make up for Keanu's lifelessness.

Thank you Puffy. At least someone liked my joke =)

I know it's kind of an ego problem, but the thing that bothers me most about crappy adaptations is that all the non-fans who just go to see movies will assume that it is an accurate depiction of the book or anime I enjoy. See: Harry Potter [Wink]

edit: where's Blayne? Oh well, I'll speak for him, our opinion's probably the same: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

One of the big problems with a Cowboy Bebop movie is which story to tell?

Will they even get that this is an ensemble story, or will it all be Keanu...with big hair...looking vacant as he flashbacks to Julia and Vicious? [Frown]

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I think an ensemble piece has a better chance of succeeding.

I wonder if Evanna Lynch could play Ed. [Big Grin]

Then again, there are no shortage of Japanese girls who act just like Ed naturally.

I am now in physical pain! Why do they have to stick him in every vaguely futuristic movie now? I read on the thread after the article someone suggest Orlando Bloom. That would suck less...maybe.

To be fair, movie-length features from series anime are almost always just bundled or extended OVAs, and not something that would succeed in or be produced by American cinema.

lowing is key, and so far Reaves doesn't seem to have that quality... As for the script it would be nice if they even stuck to the Movie's, but we know this won't happen... Then again who knows this might surprisingly be good like Speed Racer.

I think I can see the thought process that went into this. He's got roughly the right body shape. He's done martial arts movies. He's done romanaces. That covers it, right?

Well, casting guy, not quite. Keanu learned fairly sharp movements for most of his Matrix fights. Plus, that was more about effects than footwork. So his past fight scenes are no guarantee he can do Spike fighting.

Also, while Keanu can do romance, it's usually with goofy charm and persistance. He's never done anything I've seen where I'd call him sexy or charming. Spike needs to be able to do both while slouching and making rude statements.

Basically, you need someone with Hugh Laurie's ability to somehow still be sexy while being a jerk and who can move like Jet Li. I can see why you gave up and went with the guy who kind of looks like the character instead. Just allow me to place this BeeBop in a nearby parallel universe that has nothing to do with the cartoon, and I think we'll all get along just fine.

Because unlike the Keanu haters, I think he knows how to make a really fun movie. It won't resemble the anime any, but it'll probably be decent enough for what it is.

I actually liked alot of the things Speed Racer brought to the table. Metallic orange was not one of these things.

Thank you Blackblade. Speed Racer is actually a test of mine to see if people have movies tastes I generally agree with since it takes special tastes to like. There are those good movies which no one can deny are good(e.g. Dark Knight) and then there are those special taste movies like Speed Racer(not to say there aren't truly horrendous films e.g. Batman and Robin).

Though I always tell people before they see speed racer to not take it to seriously, that is what most people do anyway.

I actually thought speed racer was okay but how often do I get to say that?

As often as you choose to I suppose.

I thought it was deliciously biting when Pops says, "More like a "non"-ja. Terrible what passes for a ninja these days."

As much as I loved her as Luna, she's too mellow...in the acrobatics department.
