Hey.

A couple months ago, we talked briefly about Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds (in another thread that I didn't want to necro). I want to start reading the other RS books. I've read reviews that say they don't have to be read in publication order. Would you agree with this? If so, do you have a recommended order?

I think the trilogy should probably be read in order. It wouldn't completely ruin things to read Absolution Gap before you read Redemption Ark, but you'll understand the story better if you read them in order, and Redemption Ark will probably retain more suspense if you don't skip ahead.

The Prefect can be read before or after the trilogy. Reynolds tries a somewhat different flavor of exposition in this one - it's less direct - which I think improves the overall narration. He has not yet mastered characterization, but it's definitely no worse than in Revelation Space.

I haven't read Chasm City yet but I think it stands alone and can be read at any point.

Pushing Ice takes place in a different universe but I recommend it as well. [Smile]
