Well, well, Brad Pitt and and Angelina Jolie both got nominated for Best Actor/Actress. I guess that means they'll show up. I am, however, pulling for Kate Winslet. I'm sad Cate Blanchett didn't show up, but she has before and she will again. Yay for Marisa Tomei! Now that she's been nominated at least three times, I hope perception of her changes. Despite the Oscar, I think she is very underrated.
Of the Best Picture nominees, the only one I've seen is Frost/Nixon, but I plan to see at least two more in the next week.
Considering the middling reviews Doubt got, I'm surprised that so many were nominated from it. I have a visceral dislike of Meryl Streep, though - if she wins over Kate Winslet I'll throw something, I swear.
I love that Wall-E got nominated for best screenplay considering so much of it was silent. I think it is appropriate - I thought it was very original and well put-together.

I agree with you about Marisa Tomei. She is one of the very best actresses, and has been for a long time. I will be rooting for her in that category. Interesting to see Richard Jenkins nominated. I haven't heard of the movie. But he's another great actor who rarely gets his due. I'll be rooting for Mickey Rourke in that category, though (at least until I see 'The Visitor'). I almost dared to hope Dev Patel might be nominated. I'm sure everyone is wondering why Clint Eastwood isn't up for Best Actor for Gran Torino, and why Dark Knight isn't on the Best Picture list. What the heck is Frozen River? Has anyone seen it?

I've only seen a handful of movies that got nominated for the top categories: "The Dark Knight", "Wall-E", "Tropic Thunder" and "In Bruges". I guess I shouldn't have commented in the thread about last year's best movies.
I'm torn about going to see "The Wrestler". I really really don't care about the whole professional wrestling "sport", but on the other hand it's getting really good reviews and some nominations too...

Cool! Presto got nominated for best animated short! And I'm really torn between Bolt and WALL-E... Can't they both win?
Also kinda pleased that Robert Downey Jr. got a nod for Tropic Thunder. Just saw that movie yesterday (I never thought I'd actually like a Ben Stiller movie) and he did an amazing job in it; you can hardly tell it's him. Of course, I seriously doubt anyone will beat Heath Ledger, but still.
Marisa Tomei is in The Wrestler? Why didn't anyone tell me?!? I must go see it NOW!!!

Neah, I don't think too many people expected it to be. Christian Bale said a while ago that while Ledger's performance was certainly worth an Oscar, the movie as a whole was not that good.

It's dissapointing to say that I've only seen Button as far as best picture go. Not sure which ones are still in theater by me.
The Streep was fair in Kramer vs. Kramer(about the only movie I can stand watching her in).
It's pretty interesting to see In Bruges in one of the categories.
Did Changeling not recieve good reviews? I was suprised to not see Clint up there in Directing.

I would have liked to have seen Wall-E as a best picture nod. It will be difficult to get any animated film on the best picture, even though, sometimes they should.

I'm really pulling for Frost/Nixon to win best editing. It is amazing how riveting a bunch of people in suits that are out of power talking in living rooms and hotel rooms can be, and part of t credit for the excellence of the movie goes to the great editing.

My predictions more for what I think about Hollywood and the Oscars than actually seeing any of these.
Picture of Year:
Slumdog Millionaire or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. (exposed, but obscure to the masses or overhyped)
Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler (because the Oscars love a comeback)
Melissa Leo for Frozen River (Just a feeling)
Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight (dead and well liked by the Hollywood elite. A tribute rather than a performance award).
Marisa Tomei for The Wrestler (In a lackluster list of actresses in a lackluster list of movies, go for the one that doesn't match).
Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire (usually, but not always, the best picture and best director go together. In this case I think it will if this movie is picked).
Milk: Dustin Lance Black (Because they don't want to give it best picture, but they do want to make a political statement).
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: Eric Roth, Robin Swicord (Because its a classic short story stretched beyond its original intentions darn it!)

It could very well be the best picture made of the year, but it isn't the sort of movie that usually wins an Oscar for Best Picture of the year.

Especially considering it was probably the first of these films to be released- it feels like that movie is years old now, I've seen it on so many occasions. It's a really clever and interesting film though, and unlike some of these, it's one of those movies that really *is* a movie- it feels just like it was made for, and works absolutely perfectly in movie format. I think that's why it was nominated in that category.

I just got back from seeing The Reader, and I loved Kate Winslet's performance. The only other Best Actress nominee I've seen was Meryl Streep - but I personally think Kate was better. And really? Robert Downey Jr.? I'm quite pleased, really, because I love Tropic Thunder... but I guess I've got to be the dissenting voice here and sincerely hope that Philip Seymour Hoffman takes the category, yes, even over Heath Ledger. Call me a heretic if you must, but I'm sticking with my guns.*
I dunno, I didn't even realize the nominations came out today until I got to campus and saw a headline online. I used to have a tradition where I woke up at the crack of dawn to watch the nominations live... but not this year.
(* By "guns," I here mean "Mr. Seymour Hoffman's acting chops.")

To be fair, the unofficial name of the movie was Batman: The Dark Knight. Nonetheless, although it was a far cry from an ensemble piece, I do feel that a movie can have more than one leading male role. And is the role based on time he actually appeared in the movie? Anthony Hopkins only appeared in Silence of the Lambs for sixteen total minutes, and Ledger was by far in there longer than THAT.
Heath Ledger is indeed deserving of a Best Leading Actor win for his brilliant performance-exacerbated press to do his premature death or not.
It surprises me how few of these movies I've seen. I'm looking up Frost/Nixon online-I'm looking forward to it, especially being madly in love with Michael Sheen. [But that's another story entirely.]

Nighthawk, Kung Fu Panda was a really wonderful movie. Definitely worth checking out. Much better than Bolt(and I really enjoyed Bolt), though I would pick Wall-E as the winner.

I saw more movies in 2008 than ever before (8 I think) and only one was nominated for anything, so Bella Bee that might not mean you didn't see many.

Wow, 8 is more than ever before? I saw... 25 movies at the cinema last year. Five were 2007 movies released in France only in 2008, but the rest are 2008 movies. I guess it might be my record too...

I fourth the recommendation of Kung Fu Panda. It was fantastic - funny, poignant, surprising, and all the characters were interesting.
Apparently I like Jack Black better as a cartoon. It fits him.

I wonder if Slumdog's songs are going to split the vote in Best Song, much like the tragedy that happened to Enchanted last year. I hope that "Jai Ho" wins - I loved the opening scene with "O Saya", but the song works best with the images, not as a stand-alone.
