There seems to have been a large influx of xkcd threads lately.... it's not a bad thing.

I always forget about it....then someone posts a link, and I get to read 3 months of it at a time. (about 1 month into it now....lol...and already found 2 that were close)

So why does xkcd have a huge following? It's no more clever or funny than the ten zillion other geek humor cartoons available online. And quite a bit more repetitive.

"Remember this 80s/90s cultural reference?"

"I said something inappropriate to/about a woman! Oh, I'm so naughty!"

"Mathematics is the only pure science. Because it just is."

"I'm a geek in love with another geek! Have I mentioned this? Yes? Well, I'm mentioning it again!"

No need to get all huffy Puffy. [Wink]

We could say the same about you Puffy.

Remember this old cartoon/comic book, well I remember it better.

Look at me I know every cool movie before anyone else.

.... well we can't say exactly the same thing, but I check xkcd once a week, and I normally rely on you for new movies, and check for updates from you about once a week.

I'm just saying: I've seen these jokes before. And they were better drawn. [Big Grin]

(Well, not the weird, over-the-top math worship.)

I've never pretended my movie posts weren't derived from outside sources. Most of my movie posts are links to an outside source. [Smile]

I don't remember saying I remembered comics or cartoons "better" than others here. Though I'm sure someone can find a time (or times) that I did. Hopefully phrased in a less off-putting manner than that. [Embarrassed]

To me, it's a nod to the fact that I don't read comics for the artwork anyway. So, at least with XKCD, that pretense is stripped away.

Of course, I also enjoy the jokes...

...that Buttercup should hook up with one of the men who kidnapped and planned to murder her for money?

Or something else? [Wink]

Puffy, I've never actually seen someone do the jokes XKCD does, and I read a lot of geek comics. Most of the other geek comics I've read are written by Computer Gamer type geeks. So the jokes are mostly game based. XKCD is written by a former NASA physicist and therefore incorporates a fair bit more science, math and history of science than any other web comic I've seen. Also the writer is quite the prankster and has a fairly twisted sense of humor. Which all around lends itself to one of the best comics I've ever read.

There's a lot more to it than the list of things you think are repeated. Which makes me wonder just how much XKCD you've read. Go back and browse through the archives. There are some hysterical, and not a few poignant, comics in there.

I like it. A lot. It is fairly intelligent, and they approach a lot of things from an angle I haven't seen before.

I like a comic that doesn't talk DOWN to me. A lot.

I enjoy the humor of xkcd, but I really wish he'd team up with an illustrator. It could be Calvin & Hobbes quality if it had decent artwork.

I kind of like the quality of the artwork. At times, it's almost elegiac.

And I definitely can't think of another webcomic quite like it. Which ones do you think come close, Puffy?

Agreed.

Besides, my recollection is that he CAN draw quite well. He chooses to use simple line drawings.

Yeah, every now and then he does something that shows off his drawing, such as a dream sequence for the stick figures that isn't full of stick figures, iirc.

He can draw really well (and does, IMO, just simply).

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I like it BECAUSE of the stick figures.

xkcd's art is like Exploding Dog's - simple but incredibly expressive.

The sense of humor just resonates sometimes. Not every comic is perfect, I don't get every joke, and I didn't always find them funny at first, but I read the archive in a sitting when there was around 300 comics, and after that you sort of "get" the state of mind.

Nice to see you posting again, Annie. I know you've been back for a while now, I just haven;t welcomed you back yet. [Smile]

Or this one.

No Puffy you misunderstood me, you never said you remembered anything better, but I doubt anyone here on hatrack would argue against your knowledge of comics and older television.

Posted by Alcon (Member # 6645) on :

Once again this discussion got me reading through the archives and remembering comics I'd completely forgotten about, such as this one.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Thanks Kwea. I'm mostly back when I'm supposed to be working on something else.

Out of ignorance or preference, the answer to your question is "others disagree."

The guy knows something about drawing. I've never doubted that. Filling out the stick figures would, IMO, rob the strip of some of its freshness. Lots of its humor depends on the simplicity (and often absence) of visible expressions.
