Haven't played I, II, III. I've played IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, X-2.

Haven't seen XII, Looking into XIII.

Completed, IV, VI, VII, IX.

VIII my save got corrupted, XI was an MMO, X-2 I got stuck 10 minutes in a dead end.

Going by Japanese release dates. Ild like to play in order of what has a good story.

Wow, I'm experiencing the same "dilemma." I really wanna play one of 7-10, but I can't pick....and when I do think I've picked, I decide against it 'cause I have so much other stuff to do.


In my heart, I know I should play IX because it's underrated, and I only ever got halfway.

Why don't you just get the rom of FFV? That's a solid game and pretty difficult as well. Music is also fantastic.

Out of the later ones I'd say play FFXII if you can get it.

Blayne: I would agree with BlackBlade in recommending FFV, for sheer enjoyability. The job/ability system is lots of fun. I've completed I through X, and XII. XII is very different from the rest as far as the battle system (no change of screen for battles), but it makes things more fluid, and I personally enjoyed it very much.

It's always hard to recommend based on story, as I don't know your tastes...but I would recommend the following order:

XII, V, VIII, X, VII, II, III, I.

Saephon: IX is my favorite from VII-X, but I know people that would swear VII is the best game ever. It goes back to preference...IX is a tribute to the whole series before it, while still breaking new ground. That's a lot of the reason that I liked it so much.

XII is not an easy game to like. Most of my friends didn't. The story is good in theory, but there's very little narrative focus. I was a little put off by how most of the areas were hybrids between a dungeon and an overworld map. Not that I don't like dungeon crawling, but I like my RPGs with a liberal amount of evenly distributed storyline, and you'll go hours killing the same kinds of enemies with little in the way of story advancement.

Being a creature of habit I manually input my commands til the end boss, and used gambits during the post-game sidequest-a-thon. Probably a mistake, because I only really enjoyed the game when I created a gambit that could obliterate enemies.

I, II and III have nothing in the way of stories, but they are definitely a challenge. If I had to pick my top 4, the ones you've finished are actually those that I would pick. Maybe start VIII over. X and X-2 are still worth playing. Or you could snag a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics, arguably a better game than any of the "main" entries.

A little off topic, but while everyone is talking about Final Fantasy I was just want to say how ANNOYING it is when the major video game websites (IGN, Gamespot) constantly refer to FFIV and FFVI as FFII and FFIII.

I mean, I understand the nostalgia for the title many of the "journalists" original played the games under and it is certainly a worth a "originally released as..." footnote, but it doesn't stop there. In nearly every review of a remake/port the writer has to spend what seems like an entire page explaining the history behind the name change. This, to me, can only be redundant or confusing depending on who is reading the article. The reader is either already a fan (and thus would know the history already) or is new to Final Fantasy (and thus will be confused by the multiple titles being used in the review).

Like I said, if it stopped at a simple footnote it would be fine, but it doesn't. Gamespot apparently has an ongoing feature about the best games ever. One of the game listed was Final Fantasy III (US). That's right. Nearly ten years after the game was released in American under its rightful title of VI, and they still refer to it as III. This is made even more confusing now that the real FFIII has actually been released in America. Made even WORSE when they posted the cover art of FFIII for the DS rather than the old "Final Fantasy III" for the SNES cover, or FFVI GBA or Anthology cover.

Argh.


(BTW, best FF is a tie between IV,VI, and IX)

I'm having trouble with XII. Other more funner games distracted me from it. Try to play 8. I love it almost as 7, and then there is 10 which I adore.

None of the above. Grab an emulator and rom of Chrono Trigger. Better than any FF game IMHO. But if you have to, play VII again

I know the critiques of XII, and maybe its because that was my first serious exposure to the series, but I loved it. I've dumped over 100 hours into it, twice. I don't know why, but something about it appealed to me.

That being said, I second the Tactics nomination.

Let's see...

FF is difficult and interesting. It's fun to see how the game used to be.

FFII is, uh... okay I guess.

FFIII is interesting, but V did its gameplay better.

FFIV isn't bad.

FFV's job system is very enjoyable, and when it comes down to it its gameplay is really, really fun.

FFVI just had panache. It's story was one of the more interesting ones, and though it's a bit easier than, say, V, it's still quite enjoyable.

FFVII is a nostalgiac favorite of mine.

FFVIII. Ahh... drawing magic is insanely inane. And the storyline seems to collapse into itself by the end. But it wasn't bad.

FFIX. After playing a lot of the older games, I appreciate it a lot more.

FFX. I haven't played it in awhile, but I remember enjoying it greatly. Rather cinematic, and had a good story.

FFX-2. One third FFX, one third FFV, and one third Sailor Moon. A decent evolution of the atb battle system, though.

FFXI. Never played it.

FFXII. Neat innovations. It has some flaws, but it's quite an enjoyable game, as long as you put the time into the gambits and so forth. Still, they should give you most of them a lot earlier.

FFT. Best of them all, even if its a different genre. I recommend the PSP version, for the sake of the improved translation, which does wonders and shows just how interesting a story this game has.

While Chrono Trigger isn't a Final Fantasy game, I still recommend it. Play that, regardless of what you choose! It's simply one of the best straight rpgs I've ever played, even to this day. And I played it back on SNES, and have played a lot of games since then.

Or, if you have a PSP, they released a kind of remake/director's cut called War of the Lion(s), I think?

Tactics for advance I tried, and was incredibly bored by.

Tactics Advance and A-2 are different games. The original Final Fantasy Tactics was for PS1 and has also been remade on the PSP under the title Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.

You want Tactics, not Tactics Advance.

I finished Chrono Trigger sometime after me and my younger brother finished some of the other FF games and I really Liked CT and felt it was indeed awesome and I liked the ability to screw around with the endings.

We need more time travel rpgs.
