Mmm . . . I just found Bacon Salt. No meat, no calories. Tastes good. It is basically a mix of seasonings that are supposed to emulate the flavor of bacon. It tastes a little like an improved version of Bac-O's, but it is nearly indestinguishable from bacon in some things. The amount of success depends on what you use it on and what flavor you use. Hickory tastes more like bacon on some things, while Original tastes better on others.

So far, I've tried:
- Hickory in spaghetti --- FANTASTIC
- Original on Popcorn --- very good
- Original on Radishes --- weird
- Hickory on Eggs --- pretty good
- Original on Hamburgers --- really good
- Original mixed low no fat sour cream for carrot dip --- really good

I'll keep tasting, but this stuff is good. Steak next, probably.

Is it kosher?

Yeppers. Kof-K.

Website!

Edited to note that some varieties are Kof-K, not all. Click the nutrition info links on this page.

Edited one last (or not. See below) time with the full list:
Kof-K certified: Original, Natural, Applewood, Maple, Jalapeno, Mesquite.
Allegedly kosher, but clearly the Kof-K ain't convinced: Hickory, Peppered.
Fuggedaboudit: Cheddar.

...and then I noticed this page, which says they're all Kof-K, but some are dairy, and realized I had to edit this again.

The first ingredient is salt, and they have the chutzpah to call themselves low-sodium? [Roll Eyes] [Razz]

Pass.

...well, they do call it "Bacon Salt." [Smile]

On the other hand, salt is the first of many ingredients. Bacon salt appears to have around one-quarter the amount of sodium of regular salt. (100-150 mg per 1/4 tsp., depending on the flavor, vs. 590mg.)

Very low sodium, no, but compared to the most direct alternative, it does seem to qualify.

Meh. It's still mostly salt.

I don't use garlic salt or onion salt either.

You only need a tiny bit. It's for when you'd use salt anyway, like eggs. But it's a lot healthier than the side of bacon.

Just about the only things I don't salt are chocolate and Coke.

I don't salt my eggs, or much of anything else.

Yes, that's certainly a selling point for me and Lisa.

Rivka, I believe we've talked before about how you're extraordinarily sensitive to salt to begin with?

So, you don't eat salt and you're not into bacon.

I don't think you're their target audience. [Wink]

I, on the other hand, crave salt, and love bacon.

I saw this in the store the other day and almost bought some to put on my chocolate.

Only "extraordinarily" compared to your average American, whose tastebuds have been destroyed by over-salted, over-processed food. [Razz]

I actually enjoy fake bacon of various varieties, and might consider the "bacon" mayo.

Mmmm. Bacon is meat-candy. Salty.

I don't like salt very much, but bacon is good with EVERYTHING!

How about fry sauce made with baconnaise??!!!

Sweet. That'd be better than the fry sauce at Training Table (that has barbeque sauce in it).

I just wish I had a salt mill filled with strips of bacon so I could grind real bacon onto my food.

Now that does sound fabulous!
