I just finished Old Man's War by John Scalzi. Basic rundown is that human's are competing with aliens for planetary resources and the one's who are chosen to fight are genetically modified geezers. Old people rock. Genereally I liked it, as it used a nice flavor of science fiction that didn't leave you scratching your head at the math and struggling to envision the settings the author is weaving.
I've found myself recently picking up on my sci-fi reading, whereas before I was more prone to taking the fanatasy side of literature. Before this I had a round with Ringworld, which I really liked as well, but it is one of those books where the concepts and details are outside of my knowledge pool and I'm left doing research as I read the book.
So two good novels and now I get to my point. Each has more books associated to them, be they sequels or companions. Do I continue, are they better/worse than the first, how do they stack up against your preferred science fiction readings?

Old Man's War is the best of the series, but the rest of the books are good too.
Zoe's Tale is a simple retelling of The Last Colony from Zoe's point of view, so there won't be much tension there, but it's still worth a read.
It's been so long since I've read Ringworld I couldn't tell you one way or the other about the rest. Sorry.

I really liked the "Old Man's War" series. The next book Ghost Brigades is sort of off putting because it doesn't follow the main character from the previous book. Although the third book does pick up his story line.
