Hello.
My discman that played mp3s on a disc is spluttering and on the verge of breaking. I would like to step it to the next level in the future and step into the world of MP3 players.
What I need is a player that has at least 40 gigs. I don't need video, touch, slide, none of that stuff. Just someplace where I can store all of my music that I need. Which is just about every song.

Which would be the best way to obtain such a thing and the best brand? I talked to some fellow about Ipods at Best Buy and he said that those things only last two years!!! I'm thinking of getting a used or refurbished player because I don't have enough money to skin a flea, but if some person who constantly buys the latest equipment has an Ipod or a zune they want to get rid of, there's me to consider. ^^

Sansa makes some decent MP3 players that routinely go on sale for under $80.

But why on Earth do you need something that has at least 40GB? That's a truly insane amount of music to keep on your player.

I would say if you do end up getting an ipod make sure you actually buy the warranty. They do break like crazy, expecially the ones with larger hard drives, because i'm on my third 80 gig right now and it's been hard-drive malfunction every time.

I'm not sure what a good MP3 player would be though, because they stopped making the 80 gig ipod and the 120 gig is really expensive.

You could probably find a better option

Because I need to back up all of my music and it's about as much of the music I need.... And then some. 60 gigs would be better. Or 80. 120 would be a dream though.

My ipod is on it's 3rd year, gets regular usage, and has never malfunctioned. How long have you had the same cellphone? It all depends on how well you take care of your electronics.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

You don't need a player to back up your music. Just get an external hard drive, which is going to be by far the cheapest route to go. Thanks to feature shelling, you're not going to find many mp3 players above 16 gb or so that don't include things you may not necessarily need, like video capability, which up the price.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

But I want to bring every single album and song with me... Which would be sweet and convenient.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

Well...I want a beautiful sports car with a seven passenger interior that gets 45 mpg and costs under $10,000, too, but we can't always get what we want. [Smile]

I want a Porsche, but I don't drive one because I can't afford one. Not trying to be mean, but trying to get you a little more realistic.....the ones with larger drives are less dependable, more prone to breaking, include functions you don;t want, and are out of your price range.

Even a 16G player holds an immense amount of music, most of which you would have NEVER been able to carry before mp3 players.

Look at those ranges, and settle on one that won't break the bank.

Alright, but I'd settle for a simple used one, or even a new CD discman that plays mp3s, but it's easier to have something that has all the music and I don't have to carry CDs and get them scratched up.

I don't understand the logic. You don't need to carry your entire music collection with you at all times, you know.

I had a second generation 20GB ipod that lasted about 5 years total (though there was a problem while it was still under warranty. Still got at least 4 years continuous).

I currently have an ipod classic with 120GB, which has functioned fine for almost a year now. I'd get the extended warranty just to be sure, but in my experience they aren't too bad.

I know, but I want to. Having it all in one place is easier than having to carry around all of these discs that get lost.

And you do when you're obsessed with music and also want to block all the annoying sounds such as gum popping, squeaky noises and all of the sounds that drive me crazy as soon as I leave the house.

But, no, you still don't get my point.

Leave your discs at home. Burn them onto your PC, which almost certainly has room. Then use the music player software of your choice to create playlists and sync those playlists to your player, up to that player's capacity.

Then, when you leave the house, you are carrying only your player; your discs are somewhere in your basement, gathering dust, because you never need to touch them again after ripping them to your PC's hard drive. And if you want a different batch of music on your player for tomorrow, you just grab a different playlist and sync for five minutes.

But what if I'm out and I have the urge to hear a song and I don't have it?
And it's one of those essential songs. If all of your songs are in the same place, you never have that problem.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I don't have more than 2GB of essential songs. Are all 120GB essential? [Smile]

Posted by LargeTuna (Member # 10512) on :

Yeah TomD some people are just music junkies and it makes a really huge difference how much memory their ipod has. But yeah I got my ipod after saving and getting gift cards for Hannukah and my birthday. I had a 2 gig ipod for a few months that i borrowed from a friend when mine was broken and it was painful. Not having the money to get a large memoried mp3 isn't fun.

Totally, dude, especially when you want all of these operas, all of this classical music, the entire albums of all kinds of bands and musicians I love... Then you have progressive music which tends to be at least 10 minutes or longer per song...
2 gbs probably wouldn't even cover Dir en grey. Plus I really like high bitrates. They sound better, but folks say, no, I can't even tell the difference, but I can.

And then there's all of the bands and musicians I haven't even heard of yet. I've got to have room for them.

I have something like 25Gb of music on my mp3 player right now. And yes, I listen to all of it. But my mp3 player is a 40Gb Creative Jukebox, and it's about 7 years old, and dying. I, too, would be interested in finding a reliable 40Gb replacement player. Especially as we go on really long road trips, where I can't have my computer to re-sync playlists all the time.

For the memory you want, get an ipod with a warranty.

I've had two ipods in the last 6 years. The first was the model right before they added video. It last a year before it went wonky but I had a warranty with Best Buy and after the Geek Squad sent it off for multiple unsuccessful repairs, they finally let me replace it with the new video model.

Five years later, its still kicking. The battery isn't awesome anymore but that's because I plug it into my car system when I drive around town. It automatically charges and repeatedly charging it everyday is NOT good for it. But it works in my car and for three or four hours unplugged, so I don't mind.

I have about 100GBs of music(including audiobooks) and roughly the same amount of video. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to put all of it on one mp3/video player and never have to transfer anything again.

I currently use a 16GB iPhone for all my iPod needs, and I don't have any substantial problems with the size limitation, but there are certainly times I lament not having certain music or video at my disposal. Vacations and trips are the times this is most likely to be an issue.

Understandable, for sure, I know plenty of music junkies, I know why this is important. so let's take a look at the budget you're working w..

I use a 4gig sony ericson walkman, video capable (just because I cant stand tiny screens with no information) and it has an un-godly battery. I keep a stereo at work and plug my mp3 player when I start my shift and leave it on, Im talking 41 hours a week and only have to charge on the week end, this is after several months of such overkill the battery was much stronger when I bought it. I cant personnally fathom having thousands and thousands of songs that I even like let alone wanted on hand, my 4gig is barely over half memory used and I never lack for a good song. But thats just me, your head has got to be better than any music tech if you can even recognize all those songs.

I'm considering downgrading my mp3 player, I don't need the video ipod since I got my netbook. I do think I'd want something with a screen to see the song name, probably 2-5gb. Would you say Sansa?

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

What will you do with the video Ipod?

Posted by BlueWizard (Member # 9389) on :

I don't really have any MP3 other than some samples that came with a music player, but they are averaging between 5mb and 8mb, a quick calculation indicates that an 80gb drive will hold 10,000 MP3s.

Do you really have 10,000 songs? And, how hard is it going to be to find one song out of 10,000. That's a lot of files to manage.

Now, if you are downloading applications and videos, that's probably a reasonable sized storage device, but for nothing but MP3's that's a lot.

That said, it's your money. I've heard Creative MP3 player are reasonably good.

Given your needs and budget, I think the best option for you would be an mp3 player with a microSD expansion slot - preferably one that supports SDHC. I believe Sansa makes players in the $50-$100 range with this option. MicroSD cards are tiny, so a small case could hold several 4gb+ playlists and easily fit in your pocket with your player. If you ever need more space for new music, just buy another card.

Edit now that I'm at a computer: 8gb Sansa Fuze w/ SDHC expansion - $73.86 + free shipping

It's a little more reasonable when you just consider the covenience of being able to store all your files, thus never having to worry that a particular thing won't be there- and you never have to switch out anything either. In my 120G ipod, aside from a little video, I have over 100G of audio. That's about 300 audiobooks, 15 gigs of podcasts, and the rest is music. If it were bigger, I would add more music from my archives of Mozart, Liszt and Beethoven, each of which clock in at over 25 gigs, not to mention Bach, which is closer to 60 when you start getting into alternate recordings and instrumentation. I'm not pretending that isn't a kind of sickness, but if you've got it, hey, flaunt it.

It is indeed a kind of sickness. I've got a fairly large audio library, but the situation has never arisen in which I absolutely needed to hear one of the songs in that library right away and it just didn't happen to be on my player. And if it had, I'd probably still manage to live through it.

mmmmmmm. Bach... I wish I had complete Bach recordings. I'd float from the sheer happy.
it's music fever... those who don't have it can never understand the burning passion and obsession those who are afflicted by it have for music.
Though I admit there are several songs I listen to over and over and over, but then I'd be like, I want to listen to Erode by Dir en grey, what, I don't have it? Nooooooooooooooo [Frown]

I'd live too, but it was worth the extra 4,000 Kc to buy the big ipod instead of the nano. That, and I'm pretty sure any nano I might buy would surely meet its fate in the washing machine.

If you have no money, how do you own such a large music library?

Posted by scifibum (Member # 7625) on :

There's a great deal of copyright-free music available. It could totally be legit. [Smile]

I would tend toward a cheap MP3 player that accepts SD or MicroSD cards myself, plus a few cheap SD or MicroSD cards. You don't get the convenient-backup-of-all-your-media, but frankly I don't think a portable, easily damaged device is a very good choice for that anyway.

I absolutely love my Sansa. It's a 6GB, and with one minor programming issue that is probably my fault rather than theirs, it's perfect. And that was before they redesigned them to look much more aesthetically pleasing and dropped the price dramatically from where it was a few years ago.

I think they're great.

Synesthesia, aren't you a sound synesthete? I imagine it makes a difference compared to some of us who can go weeks without listening to a whole song (NPR segue music is the only music I hear for long periods of time).

Why yes I am. I can taste music, smell it, feel it on my skin, think of it in terms of colours based on key and I can't go very long without it without feeling some sort of withdrawal.
I need that stuff.

Weeks?! [Angst]

I'm thinking this might not be a bad deal, even though it's only 20 gbs, it still is very inexpensive.
