Anybody ever heard of them?

I'm reading one now, called Fate/stay night.

It's definitely a novel. But on the computer, with sound effects, background pictures, music, voice acting... that sort of thing.

It's also quite long, and the translation I'm reading is surprisingly well written.

Anyway, anyone here ever hear of these things, or read them? Anyone who has have any recommendations for well-written ones?

Sounds remarkably like a movie. [Wink]

Ha ha ha.

Actually, no. It's pretty much a full length novel, with the proper number of words and sentences and everything.

But since it's on a computer, it can have pictures and voice acting for the dialogue, and so forth. For the dialogue at least, it's much like a book on tape.

Sadly, the dialogue isn't in English in this one, so it doesn't really help. The writing is, however, in the version I'm reading.

...though seriously, does anyone have any recommendations? I know it's a kind of obscure art form (or at least, it seems obscure to my knowledge!) but this place surely has those who know of the obscure!

I haven't heard of very many making it to the U.S. or to English translation.

Excepting, of course (and regrettably), pornography, which finds its way over with an inevitability by which one could set a watch.

For those not familiar with the format, it's less like a movie and more like something between a children's illustrated storybook (reading text underneath an illustration of the scene or action) and a puppet show (characters suddenly appear as they say their lines, though their images are usually static.)

Well, heck, even the one I've been reading apparently has a few... such scenes in it.

Which honestly took me by surprise. I didn't expect it, certainly not something quite so graphic, especially not in such a serious, dramatic story with a focus on death, accepting the past without crippling guilt, and how self-destructive the desire to save everyone without loss can be.

But, well, lots of books and movies have ill-placed sex scenes in them, and at least the ones in this one have had the effect of altering the dynamic between the characters... which just makes the ending even sadder, actually.

They're still ill-placed and completely unnecessary, as the (very long) story works just fine without it.

But even if they're not officially released in English, a recommendation of good ones is good regardless, so I can at least keep tabs on them!

Though the only reason I'm putting up with having to sit at my computer to read it is the pretty pictures (and... well, they pop up whenever something interesting happens), the music, and because the story is drawing me in quite well.

The author can write fight scenes quite well. I'm actually impressed! I'll have to take notes.

Okay. Gotten to the ending.

That was sad. I actually cried.

I think that was the first portrayal of the death of King Arthur that really got me emotionally.
