Advantages:

-twice as big as my old room at home.
-already furnished.
-3 roommates, all of them asian so this is like an Otaku dream situation by sheer luck.
-im two buildings from my brother whose also has an apartment.
-everything is included into my rent.
-probably easy to find a part time job to fill out my wallet.
-they're all I think exchange students so 3 are FROM Korea and one I think is FROM Japan. Woot! Interesting conversations galore!

Cons

-As soon as I mentioned anime the Japanese girl said "oh your an Otaku?" to which I recall is more of a derogatory term in Japan then being called a nerd in NA. [Frown]

This is going to make my webcomic interesting.

I believe Otaku is relatively derogatory in Japan, but keep in mind this girl is Japanese-American. It could have the bad-nerd connotation that our mutual impression is the Japanese norm, or it could have the American connotation... kind of still means you're a nerd, but since it's only used by nerds, it means you're cool.

My advice, ask her if she likes anime, and go from there.

And good luck with not living at home.

Good luck with your own place, Blayne. Here's to dealing with all the little problems that crop up as you go. [Smile]

Suggestion for scoring with your new room mates: Do not mention your China fanboiism. I strongly suspect it will be rather unpopular with Japanese and Koreans. Also do not brag about how you intend to aggress on Japan in TEINY and annex their Korean holdings, and particularly do not complain about Unequal Treaties imposed by imperialist Western nations. [Big Grin]

You mean you have a girl as one of your roommates? How--progressive! They never did stuff like that way back when I was in college (in days of yore).

Actually Koreans tend to be very friendly with the Chinese as they're each others MFN trading partners roughly, Chinese tend to be somewhat Anti Japanese but not vice versa, it wasn't the Communists who technically defeated the Japanese the government of China at the time officially was the ROC/Nationalists.

Funnily enough when on the phone with Dano discussing the game I commented how it would be awkard if they walked in on me mentioning things like "Invading Japan" etc.

I'm confused. Three roomates, you say, then three of them are from Korea and one of them is from Japan. 0_o

Anyway, congrats on moving out. Hope things continue to work out for you.

Blayne is not, of course, a math major.

This is practically a requirement these days. I haven't not lived with at least one woman since I was 20.

This is one of those questions from MindTrap, isn't it?

Ah crap crap crap crap.

We have Bell as our ISP, this is terrible they throttle my internets! They're squeezing my tubes man! Gotta convince my roommies to switch to videotron when the contract expires.

Okay managed to pull a bunch of tricks to double my downloading to 60 to 70 kbps, should be higher, must keep searching...

edit using tor with it is not 75-80 i think.

Great way to introduce yourself to new flatmates: "Hi, I'll just be starting 15 torrents right now, don't bother trying to check your email because the lines will be tied up for the next 3 months with a download of obscure fanboi anime."

You do know how high speed internet works right? What your describing is virtually impossible with a decent ISP even with 12-20 people using one connection.

on a note i cracked the barrier, now im managing speeds of 700+ a second.

I have no idea what you mean by "virtually impossible with a decent ISP."

I've had a lan party at a friends house once, we had videotron as our ISP about 10 of us, pretty much everyone downloading stuff and no one had any problems with bandwidth.

So the fact that when others in my flat are downloading a lot, the connection gets slower is all in my mind? Because I'm pretty sure it's true.

Blayne, I've blown out an entire neighborhood's cable internet by uploading too rapidly [Razz]

(A cable tech called us to check and see if we had any possible viruses; I just apologized for uploading so much, and asked what was a reasonable limit from their perspective, then set a cap on the router).

And it has nothing to do with whether or not you have a decent ISP. Some sorts of internet service are bound by constraints in how their service works. Mostly, I suspect you guys weren't actually causing all that much traffic. Your 700 kbps speed is very slow, for example. That's barely half what even a basic residential DSL line can do (absent substantial interference). My cable internet regularly downloads at speeds over ten times as fast as what you're getting.
