so i've never seen the show, but my super cool rich aunt who likes tons of the same indie and electronica bands as me and is just the funnest person over 40 i know (no offense to hatrackers out there who i'm sure are super fun and cool too) is going to loan me her firefly dvd's because she says the show is awesome. now i really don't know much about this show, except that people here seem to love it. I'm a 17 year old boy who has a life and doesn't really spend that much time with my family at home, so i watch some tv shows with my single mom (to spendd time with her since I'll be off to college in a couple years). so do you think i would like this show? (i like lots of sci fi) and more importantly, would this show be too awkward/weird to watched with my mom. I've watch numbers, lost, burn notice, psych, flashforward and seinfield with her in the past and it's been good.
so yeah any thoughts? is the show really that good? i know theres only like one season.

It really is that good.
I think that Firefly is more problematic for watching it with your folks (depending on your folks, of course) than any of the TV shows you mentioned.

Its fine to watch with your mother, the rare innuendo is easily laughed about together but I will warn you.... somewhere in there Mal's butt has a lingering shot. I will not tell you where, only that the rest of that episode is top notch and should not be avoided because of it.

Yes, it's true, one of the characters is effectively a prostitute. But the issue is dealt with with some maturity (not of the "mature content" type), and it's not like there's a lot of explicit sex or something. I wouldn't say its content is any more embarrassing or troublesome than "Burn Notice" or "Lost".

Common sense media rates Lost as a bit more mature than Firefly, although they agree that Firefly has more sexual content.
I'd be hesitant to watch either one with a kid not yet in his teens, but I doubt I'd feel awkward about watching either one with a 17 year old. There'd be more to discuss with Lost, I think: not only is there implied sex and nudity, there's a heroin addict, a crazy guy, and at least a dozen people in different flavors of sociopath; no real good guys. Monsters. Not to mention that you can't count on reality to function as expected. I think it could be rather disturbing to a young un.

There is a sex scene -- or the end of one -- in the first episode as Inara's occupation is established. Sexual situation only, though, no nudity. She then has a PG-13 nudish scene later in the episode.

allright, as much as I appreciate all of the feedback it is a bit mixed so I'm going to just ask my Aunt on Thanksgiving. I'm getting the impression that it's not quite as explicit as lost, but much more often. I'll probably give it a chance since LOST had virtually no problems. thanks to everyone who bothered to post here! I'll post an update when there is one.

If my parents were more into the genre, I'd watch Firefly with them. Maybe not as a 17-year-old girl, but I would now with no problem. I do think Lost is more explicit when something does come up, just to add my vote to the others there.
Speaking of cowboys, I remember watching the show Young Riders with my parents when I was in middle school, and despite there being prostitutes all over the place, because of it being a cowboy setting, it never seemed less than family friendly. Not saying Firefly is exactly the same, but I think SoberTillNoon's mention of it being a cowboy world mean you're provided that kind of filter through which to view Firefly.

I'm pretty sure there was a somewhat explicit scene in episode 1 of Kaylee in the engine room. I don't think they showed much, but you definitely got the idea of what was going on in there.

You are actually refering to the flashback episode, explaining how all of the already present crew members came to the ship. And yes we all understand that Mal first met her mid-coitus, but it was all visibly abstract and humorous instead of steamy and soft-core porn.

The scariest stuff so far has been the men-in-blue's icky bloodletting weapon. Rather frightening, that.
But she's loving the show, and so are her father and I.

EDIT: I have to say, it freaks me out that your eleven and twelve year olds are watching Firefly. I am pretty sure I never even watched anything remotely close to that at that age. My ten year old sister is, as far as I know, still light years away.
Reading, yes. Watched, no. Both from a fear and adult-content point of view. But I should show it to my seventeen year old sister this Christmas.
Not that it's a bad thing, it's just divorced from my experience, which was all old movies (but then I have parents who aren't really that current) Their peers will be watching much worse and without any parental guidance.
