Alrighty so I was finally able to finish my registration for my three prereq math courses, Math 202, 204, and 205 College Algebra, Matrices and Vectors, and Calculus II: Integration.
I think I started to make some new friends at the end of class a girl came up to me asking if I got the books yet as she offered to sell me here print out versions of the books at the price she got them at as she was dropping the course, I accepted and probably monday Ill be getting em'.
However after that we talked a bit and wandered off to meet her other friends and they seemed like interesting people so I got their and her contact info and think its a start of a lovely semester makin' new friends etc.
Now for Mahjong, I mentioned in a christmas thread that I got a professional table and set to pla7y with but I'm still somewhat lacking players so I play online at mahjong time, an online site where its free to play mahjong but its possible for professional players to be money as well and have sanctioned and legal tournaments.
Now the key difference between online Mahjong and table mahjong is time. Online you generally have a 10 second timer on your turn and the game will make a move a stupid one usually after about 6 seconds so you reaaaally have to be quick on your feet and constantly mentally reorganizing your hand and constantly going over what tiles you need.
So I'm forced to constantly rethink my strategy, so I got for a straight? mixed triple chow? same double chow? sou an kou? And I'm not even aware fully yet of the worth of the various hands or how the dora comes into play yet.
But where I think this is helpful for school is that I spend a loooong time simply doing 'brain mush' activities, games, anime, tv shows, escapist activities that don't require that much thought and thus for school activities unless its something like essay writing I'm "slower" then I'ld normally be in aswering questions and figuring stuff out and mentally picturing problems and their solutions.
With online mahjong I think I'm finally starting to excersize my brain again and training for memorization and quick thinking.

Side note, anyone interested in playing some Mahjong sometime?

ahh, if only we lived anywhere near each other. I can never find anyone to play, especially since I have a fairly limited number of asian friends who might actually know and be interested. On the plus side, I made quite the impression on my Hong Kong business trip a couple years back when I was the one Gwai Low (sp?) playing with everyone at the xmas party we attended
The speed you mention sounds intimidating, but also more reflective of authentic mahjong (I've yet to play a real betting game with skilled players, so I'm going of heresay). I'll have to check out that site.
I hope you have luck finding players and making new friends, it does sound like a good start to a new semester.

Actually if you did know how to play you would still be confused as I play by Japanese Riichi competition rules. Shocking I know, in a position to clearly choose between China and Japan I went for Japan...
But I grew into Mahjong from Anime (Akagi, Saki, and Ten) so I follow the rules that most put me in a position to understand the show.

Japanese mahjong isn't that much different, the hands are different but the basic rules of chow/kong/pung/pair for making a hand of four melds and a pair remain a difference I think is that in Japanese mahjong you can only win a hand as long as it has a minimum of one yaku, a yaku being some combination of tiles.
For example having 1 pung of dragon tiles concealed or otherwise is 1 yaku, declaring riichi is a yaku, having 3 different suits of chow's that are the same 'sets' of say 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 is a yaku etc.
