This looks suprisingly cool:

Watch the trailer here http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/09/lego-universe-trailer-looks-unexpectedly-thrilling/

Article about the actual game here:

I've always thought that MMOs would be so much better if they included platforming instead of just walking around, punching things until they die. This not only includes platforming, but (what looks to be) a cool system of crafting that lets you build some of your own platforms and other various stuff.

Storyline appears to be ludicrously simple, since its aimed at kids, but if this turns out to be successful I hope a more mature MMO takes some of the ideas and somehow integrates them.

Your links have goofed on you!

Officially I can say that I officially can't talk about this game. Alas.

Not even to pretend like you just heard about it and plant all kinds of ludicrously positive sentiment to encourage sales?

(re: the links, no idea what happened. They appear to be working this time, but I did this time the exact same thing I did last time).

An MMO aimed at kids? Great, that's what this world needs--thousands of 8-year-olds trained to require 16 hours of constant stimulation per day. [Razz]

It does look cool, and I think their target market is 14 year olds. I'm fondly remembering some LEGO computer games frok when I was younger, and this looks much better. But I pretty much don't think I'll ever buy an MMO because I don't like games that solely reward you for hours of gameplay. It excludes people who don't have enough time to strengthen their characters to a point where the game gets really fun.

anyone know if their's anything like that in this game? Or a guess on probable prices and stuff.
*questions not directed towards samprimary since he can't talk about it*

What has me excited about this game is it appears to include some mechanics that are more fun for their own sake, rewarding puzzle solving and creativity, than fun in a "repetitive rewards that provide you with irrational dopamine rush for hours of play". I mean, I'm sure the latter is still there but hopefully won't be the only thing keeping you there.

I read this thread title as Lego HMO. Ha!

I'm going to prod this thread up.

Here's what I can say about the lego MMO so far: i think any lego fan will enjoy playing the game in order to free build.

Also, working on it is an absolute blast. I sit mere yards away from the third largest collection of legos in the world.

here's what I made today on my lunch break.

What's the second largest collection?

I'm curious about the system requirements for the Lego game. A friend told me that he was going to be a beta tester but the game wouldn't run on his computer. And my machine is about 6 years old, with no hope of replacement or upgrade for the visible future.

That looks pretty cool. I conceived of an MMO one time that focused on building things (my favorite hobby is programming computer games); I am very interested in seeing how this turns out. I think MMOs need something revolutionary to revitalize the genre; the traditional level-grind-for-ten-hours-a-day formula doesn't appeal very much to me. This game just might be what I was looking for!

What I don't get is why there don't seem to be (m)any MMOs that just add platforming. Even if it's not particularly difficult, having interesting terrain to navigate adds a lot of fun to even simple "kill X things" quests. WoW seems to go out of its way to avoid it even in places like Gnomeregon which should have had it all over the place.

This game looks to not only include platforming, but some neat puzzle solving elements to go along with it, which is part of what has me excited.

I don't suppose you'd be able to get anyone into the Beta, would you?

Yes, I can! You'll have to wait, though. And if anyone here gets in please be sure to email me their comprehensive thoughts on their game experience.

Samp, my 6-yr old son and I are in it. He loves playing Wizard 101, and really loves LEGO, so I thought we try this out. Hopefully, I can give you a perspective from Ryan's viewpoint.

Yo guys, you can put me on the badgames list

Lego Universe ends

I saw that development on IGN yesterday and thought about you Samp. But then I thought, "Nah, if that was the game Samp was working on he'd have said something."

Is your job OK?

Is this "the bad games" list, or the "bad business models" list?

I didn't know this was out yet, or maybe didn't know it was free. I'll give it a try before it goes.

Bad news: none of the jobs are okay. Whole studio laid off. Nearly all of QA was effectively contracted labor under Prototest & co, and they're essentially all out immediately, no severance, noffin.

Good news: saw it coming. Bailed from studio a while ago. Well, okay, it's only 'good' news for me. It's just completely tragic for all my friends who were still there, most of whom were contracted QA. This was much more sudden and early than I anticipated.

Yes.

There are some QA positions open at Riot Games. Could always take a look there if they need something. Plus they could then hook us up with free Riot points. [Smile]

I didn't even know this had come out. [Frown]

You can still play it; there's a free to play option that allows you to go through the first third of the game's worlds, and get to the property build mode. I think that the move to pay-to-play is just the binary option to pay 15 bucks a month to get to the rest of the game. Then, it all goes poof in January.
