Sometimes at work I see emails where I am part of a group. Other times it seems like I am part of a mailing list. For example, if I am part of a group and someone sends an email I see everyone who gets the same email.
However, sometimes there will be an email like all@list.company.com. When I get an email from something like that I only can see me as a recipient instead of all 300+ people.
Two questions: How can I make a list email? It seems like a cool functionality. Is there a way to see who all is part of that list?

I get those all the time here on campus. They are list-serves. I'm not sure how to make them. All of them here are controlled by a department or a club or some other organized group. I don't think you can make on your own (e.q. with Gmail). But there are work-arounds.
There is a group here that like to go on hikes. Instead of putting in each of their emails every time it's nice out, I'll find the last email with everybody, reply to all, and edit the subject. IIRC, doing this will not link this reply-all to previous reply-alls. It's not an elegant solution but it works.

Not all lists are list-serves. List-serves are generally hosted on a server (most often university servers).
There are other ways to have a list, like through Constant Contact or Mailman.

Which won't work if he wants to have an ongoing conversation with everyone getting the replies. Which I think is part of what was being looked for. Neh?

I think the easiest way to do what you want is just to make a group of your gmail contacts. I don't know if you can create distribution lists without access to a dedicated mail server.

That depends on how the list is hosted and by whom.
