It's so weird to see Tom Waits looking young, clean-shaven, and hale.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

But still sounding like he gargles lava.

Oh, yeah. He probably came out of the womb like that. First time he said "ma-ma," she ran away. [Smile]

I am now scarred for life. [Wink]

Should I be concerned that I don't have a clue who Justin Bieber is???

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

No.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and say I don't like either Beiber or Waits.

No, no, no. While Waits isn't everyone's cup of tea, please give him a chance to grow on you. Before writing him off - listen to Mule Variations a few times. If, after that, you haven't grown into him, you probably never will.

This isn't the first time I've listened to Waits; I've probably heard more of his stuff than I have of Beiber's, and I've never been especially impressed.

You can have all of my Waits.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

You should listen to them together, like cantalope and prosciutto.

Beiber annoyed me, Waits disturbed me. Im gonna go listen to some Lords of Acid to deviate myself just to round out the day.

One of the best lunches I had in Italy was fresh, ripe cantaloupe wrapped up in prosciutto crudo. Man, that was a good lunch.

Of course, I like cantaloupe and prosciutto as individual components. Which I cannot say about Beiber or Waits.

What is Waits' speaking voice like? I'm going to have to google for an interview when I'm not behind my work's firewall.

Go watch Bram Stoker's Dracula. He played Renfield.

Try this: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=121963816

He is interviewed, and you can hear his normal voice. It's higher and smoother, but only high and smooth in contrast to his low singing voice.

Also Doc Heller in Mystery Men. Actually, he's been in some good films: The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, Down by Law, The Fisher King, Short Cuts, Coffee and Cigarettes and the recent The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and The Book of Eli.

That was a pristine description of his voice.

Thanks kat! That was pretty interesting to hear.

I always though of his voice as sounding like someone who's self-medicating his throat cancer by gargling with moonshine every morning. (I freaking love Tom Waits.)
