I work in a bookstore and our graphic novels section is constantly in a state of disarray, so I spend alot of time in that corner trying to put everything its in proper order. And every time I'm over there, I'd see the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World series and think "that looks interesting." But I never got around to reading them.

Then I hear its been made into a movie. And then I hear Edgar Wright is directing. You'll recognize the name if you love "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" as much as I do. So I picked up the series a few days ago and have been burning through it.

Soo good! Check out the trailer to see why I'm so excited.

Trailer for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Basically, its the story of a 20-something Canadian bass player and professional slacker. Scott Pilgrim loves video games, has a cute high school girlfriend, and is so broke that he shares a futon with his gay roommate Wallace. Then one night, a chick with bright pink hair starts making guest appearances in his dreams. Turns out she's a real girl named Ramona Flowers, an Amazon delivery girl who travels through Scott's subconscious as a shortcut (no kidding.) Things get even weirder when the two begin to date and Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends start showing up to do battle with Scott.

The series is a blast to read. Its often surreal and hilarious, and occasionally somber and quite honest in its depiction of that horrible period in everyone's life when they're stuck between being kids and being adults.

Based on the trailer, Wright is a major fanboy who will surely do the series justice. The casting of Michael Cera seems like a bad idea cause he's always doing the "awkward teen" thing, but I think Scott's character is a good twist on the stereotype. Sure he's oblivious and lacking in confidence, but he's also an amazing fighter and he's a cool balance of nice guy and total jerk.

The rest of the casting makes me insanely happy: Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans (soon to be Captain America), Brandon Routh (Superman), Anna Kendrick (who I loved in "Up In The Air"), Jason Schwartzman, Brie Larson ("United State of Tara"), and Mae Whitman (Katara in "Avatar".)

Release date is August 13, 2010.

I refuse to believe that Michael Cera could ever be older than 16.

I believe the same about Matthew Broderick.

*nod* I was thinking of Matthew Broderick as well when I wrote that post.

Broderick stayed a teenager for 30 years, then skipped straight to his 40s.
