It's that time again! Yahoo just opened enrollment for Fantasy Football 2010, and I jump started out league again.

I made a few small changes to our scoring system, mainly to the defense scoring. Based on a few comments last year, and what Yahoo usually does for IDP scoring I figured we would go with the defensive point system they use. Basically, the main difference is that Tackles and assists were scored too lightly the last 2 years. The average IDP defense wasn't worth very many points, and even a poor WR usually scored as much or more than the top defensive player for the week.

So tackles are worth 1 point (up from .5) and assists are worth .5 (up from .25).

The only other thing I did was add a bonus for exceptional performance in receiving and running, and I did that last year as well. If a QB passes for more than 300 yards he gets a bonus of 1 point, if a WR has more than 200 yards he gets 1, and if someone returns more than 200 yards of punts/kickoffs he gets one. If a RB goes over 200 yards he gets 1 too.

All of which we have done for 1-2 years already, I believe.

Anyone wants to invite a family member feel free to do so. As far as I am concerned the more teams the better, as long as everyone plays the whole season.

OK, Zondas and Civic Minded Five are in......I hope the rest of the teams from last year sign up. I raised the threshold to 12 teams as my BIL is interested in joining.

Anyone want to join for the first time this year?

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I'll join. I'm still not a huge football fan, but I had a lot of fun with this last year when my brother roped my family and me into doing a league.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Here's to not sucking. I figure I have to do better in my second year than my first. Can't do much worse.

/self-deprecation

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

LOL....it's all good. I few years ago I had the 2nd highest scoring team over all and came in dead last head-to-head. [Big Grin]

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Uh...yeah. That's what happened to me, too!

>_>

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

6 teams already, and we are starting EARLY. [Big Grin]

Yeah us!

Come on, who else?

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Signed up and ready to defend my, um, fourth-place title? [Big Grin]

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

lol....good deal!

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

OK, is anyone interested in running a live draft? Not in person, of course, but online? If anyone isn't able to make it the auto draft still works, but it would change things up a bit.....

Either way we still need to pick a draft day as well. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Posted by Jim-Me (Member # 6426) on :

I would much prefer a live draft, fwiw.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I think I would prefer to have one just because I have never done one before. But it isn't a deal breaker for me

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

I'd like to do it live for fun and learning, but I'm aware that I'll probably come up with a suckier team that way.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I think a Sunday afternoon would work....does that not work for anyone?

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Sunday is very safe for me.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

We are doing GREAT so far! We have a record number of teams registered, and I know at least two more people who are considering joining, one of which is my brother in law. He has won several leagues, and is a great guy, so I hope he joins soon. [Big Grin]

I was figuring about half way through August for the live draft, probably on a Sunday afternoon.

Posted by Godric (Member # 4587) on :

I'll be joining in again. After last year's final game defeat by 1 point, I'm looking for some amends.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Join up quick, as we are almost filled up. I actually had to adjust the settings to allow more than 12 teams this year, which if it holds up will be the largest turnout we have ever had for our league. [Big Grin]

I think right now we have about 12-13 teams already registered. [Smile]

How does this Sunday at 1pm sound for the draft?

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

we need to get one more team. If not, one team offered to drop out, but I would love to have another person join.

Anyone interested?

1pm on Sunday sounds fine to me. I have another draft that night so it's draft day all around for me!

Really looking forward to this!

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

How about 3 pm. I had a few requests to move it to 3 if possible....

Posted by Jim-Me (Member # 6426) on :

3 pm is good for me.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Sopwith? Have you been posting under a different handle?

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

3 pm this Sunday is it. Anyone who can't make it, be aware that your auto draft picks will be in effect!

I have a friend who wants to fill in our uneven league. I'll be getting her set up tonight. She's never played FF, but she's been a serious football fan since she was a kid.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

very cool. I will let Why Not know they don't have to drop then. [Big Grin]

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Oh, gosh. Naughty Nurses! That girl is so funny.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I think I am changing the roster requirements. I think that having the flex player. the wr/rb/te, is a problem with 14 people in the league. We started the flex position when we had8 players as a way of suing up the good players that were undrafted, and making it tougher to win.

With 14 players there is already a problem drafting quality WR/RB's.

Make sense?

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

well, we are stuck with it. Turns out that was one of the settings that can't be changed back once the draft is done.

As far as the draft is concerned, well.....I think I'll have a hard time repeating as champ. [Big Grin]

Posted by Sopwith2 (Member # 12372) on :

Hate I missed the draft, but I did okay with my presets. Apparently I started picking defensive players way early, though.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Should be a close race this year, with this many teams.

Unfortunately, I doubt I will do well in it. I am WEAK at WR.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

I think we're all weak somewhere, though. Except maybe Lyr. Sheesh.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Lyr is weak at WR too. Sure Moss is great, but the WR2 and WR3 spot are pretty blah. His RB2 spot isn't solid either. The only thing going for him is a slightly above average defensive group.

I guess the bright spot is that in a 12 team league, everyone HAS to be weak somewhere. The players are just too widely dispersed. So that means even if we all have weak spots, theoretically it should all be more or less even.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Yeah, but you have Clark at TE. He might as well be a WR.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Moss is in a contract year, and has something to prove, at least in his mind. He is a WR1 and WR2 all in one.

I only have one player on the can't cut list. One.

we will see! [Big Grin] That's more than half the fun!

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Huh, Yahoo's can't cut list is a bit more comprehensive than ESPN's. I'm surprised a couple of guys are on there. Looks like a lot of teams have four or so guys on the list, and a couple have one or two.

Maybe guys like Clark and Moss will make up for my poor decisions on who to play at other positions on a weekly basis. My worst position is probably coach. [Smile]

Edit to add: Also, I forgot to ask this earlier, but I actually don't know everyone's handle on Yahoo relative to who they are on Hatrack.

Kwea, could you post a roster here so I know who on Hatrack is actually running each team?

The Bombs - Carrie
Mighty Ketchups - KPC
Civic Minded Five - The Tick
Nurses - a friend of mine named Nathalie. She has a handle on Hatrack, but I don't know what it is. I think she posted a couple of times about a year ago, but she's not active.
Jankees - The Genuine
Vash's Stampede - Jim-Me
Zondas - Me
Harmless - Ecthalion
Brillo - Kwea

I think these are right...

Stripling - Godric
Losers - Sopwith

I don't know Why Not? or Barnstormers.

Why not posts as velourman, although he isn't on much these days.

Losers is my cousin Bobby. I think Sopwith is Barnstormers, actually.

Unfortunately, yes. We've already drafted. Sorry about that!

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I really wish Yahoo's guesstimates on points had some sort of...I don't know, logic to them. For the most part, I ignore the specific numbers on ESPN and Yahoo, but I usually pay attention to their advice on match-ups to see might be better positioned on any given week.

But what I don't get is how their estimations literally change on a day to day basis. I'm pretty well set on my offensive lineup, but I keep second guessing who I want to play for my defense, since I really have little idea as to what to look for when it comes for who to play or sit with defense. So I to a degree, I'm trusting Yahoo more than I normally would, but they keep bumping up scores or bumping them down by tenths and half points every day for seemingly no reason. It's quite troublesome to a IDP newbie like myself.

I'm fairly well set on playing David Harris, Curtis Lofton and Karlos Dansby for my general D spots, but I don't know if I should be considering James Laurinaitas or Paul Posluszny instead. I know they're all pretty decent, but I have no idea how to judge who is better. I'm basically trusting Yahoo's guess.

Kwea - Don't jinx me! [Smile]

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

I assume they jump around a bit because, for example, a certain running back might be going head-to-head with a certain defensive player, but if one or the other or them tweaks a toe, or misses practice, or whatever, the predicted results from that game's match-up will change. I imagine that a number of Yahoo "gurus" all guess how many points they think each player will get, taking all those things into consideration, and then they find the average. So when one of them predicts another tackle or whatever, it averages out to only a tenth of a point difference for us.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

It's official. My team sucks.

At least it now matches my job.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I've been pretty lucky this week. Arian Foster was a gift from the fantasy football gods. I was between him and Jahvid Best but I played Foster. Partway into the first half of the Lions game, Best had scored two touchdowns and I was pretty annoyed...until Foster started to run. [Smile]

Though it looks like an injury has already felled one of the guys in my vaunted defense. Good thing I have another decent backup to play with.

Looks like a couple people around the league forgot to root out injured players from their lineup.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

Well, Nathalie for one already knew she wouldn't be adjusting the roster for week one. She has multiple exams to take, including the NCLEX, and a has been in the Grand Canyon for the last few days. She's excited about FF, but when she agreed to play she warned me that she would be completely out of pocket for the first week or so. [Smile]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I didn't see any injured players on her team. Actually, I think she's in a pretty good spot with four players left and only down ten points.

Off the top of my head, someone played Sidney Rice, but I can't remember who.

Posted by Ecthalion (Member # 8825) on :

Yea.... that would be me. i was watching the saints/vikings and it struck me at about half time that i never put him on my bench. Ill probably trade him, six weeks is a bit long to keep someone on a bench in hopes that he will be great when he comes back.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Would I be totally crazy if I started Legedu Naanee instead of Randy Moss this week?

The Jets' coach has already said he's putting Revis on Moss, and Naanee was a great target for Rivers last week. Plus Moss didn't get that many looks anyway. I figure Brady would be looking to make up for that, especially after Moss' temper tantrum, but, with Revis glued to him, maybe not?

Maybe Arian Foster will eat his spinach again and this will end up a moot point. [Smile]

Posted by Ecthalion (Member # 8825) on :

If you're playing against me play Moss. Anyone else play Naanee

Bad news for next week for me- Peterson is on a bye week.

Good news - That means Farve is too

Your Vick voo-doo doll must be on a one-week delay, Lyr.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Ironic considering I picked him up for my backup in my other league. I forgot to pull the damn pin out of him.

Looks like your game is going to be pretty close. Some people are forgetting to set their lineups, which becomes a bit of a thing in the bye weeks.

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

All three of my games are currently within a ten-point difference that comes down to Monday. Blah.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I suck in this league, even WITH AP working. Without him I am screwed.

In my other league I am winning by over 150 points. [Big Grin] He has 5 players left. I have 2, but the score is currently 215 to 64, and I have Forte and the Pat's kicker left. Forte looks like a bust, as he is in the 4th and has a total of 4 points now. [Frown]

He DOES have Moss, Welker, Hernandez, and the Pats defense left, along with Ricky Williams. He will score points, but I doubt those 5 will score 150 points.

I hope.

[Big Grin]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Why would you want so many players sharing looks from a single offense? Brady isn't THAT productive.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

It's a friendly league, and a ot of guys just drafted their favorite teams. Plus, there are only 6 of us.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Ah, fair enough.

My other league is a family league where lots of people just drafted personal favorites over the "right" guys to pick. The best part about the league is my mom, who doesn't particularly care for football and thinks setting her lineup is a pain, but on Sundays is screaming at the TV for her guys to do well while gleefully steepling her fingers as the points add up for her team. Mostly the league just exists as trash talk fodder for weekly family dinners. But that's more than reason enough to play. [Smile]

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Not even 24 points from Charles Woodson (more than most offensive players!) saved me this week.

At least now I don't have to worry about keeping a perfect record? [Wink]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Okay, someone explain to me how the waiver wire order works.

I was under the impression that every time you picked up a player you moved to the end of the queue. So, if I had the second pick, and I picked someone up, I'd go back to the fourteenth spot, so those who made fewer moves would find themselves with higher picks.

But that can't be how it works, not with where people are. So is it somehow also tied into where you are in the standings, or how many total moves you've made? I'm not complaining, as it really hasn't had any negative affects on me one way or the other, I'd just like to know exactly how it works, cause I can't make heads or tails of it.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Best I could find.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Lyr, you are pretty close actually. FA don't count as wavier adds, and the original order was the opposite of the draft order.

You add a wavier add, you drop to the bottom of the list.

At least as far as I know.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Ahhh, it was the FA versus waivers thing that was screwing me up I think. Thanks.

Posted by Ecthalion (Member # 8825) on :

Randy Moss just got traded to the Vikings... I'm thinking his numbers are gonna skyrocket...

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Holy crap, I have no idea what to do with that. Certainly he's been terrible thus far this season, but, Favre isn't Tom Brady, so I don't feel excellent about this.

I think he's still going to be sitting on my bench this week, even if he isn't on a bye week like he was supposed to be.

If he has a monster week, that sucks for me, but I want a week to see how thinks shake out there. With Shiancoe injured and the rest of the receiving corps in dire straits, I could see Moss getting a lot of targets in the first week, but there's no guarantee that he can slip right into a new offensive plan and make it work that easily.

The real bright side here for me is that Brandon Tate should get more than one or two looks a game, and when added to his considerable return yardarge, I think he'll end up with the bigger boost in fantasy points than Moss for me. Both guys probably just increased in value.

Posted by Ecthalion (Member # 8825) on :

yea im not sure how well he will really do, but Favre is really really really looking for someone to throw a ball to (and of course get get intercepted lots and lots of times)

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

An analysis I read awhile back said that Rice was responsible for saving a lot of potential Favre interceptions by throwing his body in the way of whoever was trying to snake the ball away, but the current wideouts, like Berrian, just kind of wander around without defending the ball. That makes me question how good Favre really is, and whether or not Moss can do the same thing.

Moss is an elite receiver, but this makes me really nervous. I picked up some bye week players who I'm not thrilled about, but, I don't know if Moss can just slot in. He'd be a total gamble, high risk high reward maybe. I haven't decided yet if I'm willing to take that risk.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Guys, I realized that when I set the playoffs up at first I make a mistake. We have usually done an 8 team playoff, even when we had a lot fewer teams.

I changed this tonight to what I thought I had set up in the first place, 8 teams for the playoffs. If this is an issue, please speak up now, it is not too late to change it back to 4 teams only.

I just think that is we did 8 teams back when there were only 9 teams in the whole league we should stay that way now that we have 14 teams.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

Hooray necro bump!

Is there any interest in a league this year? We've still got a few weeks before the season starts, which ought to be enough time to get things going.

I was wondering if someone was going to get this going this year.

I'm interested, but I've already committed to two other leagues.
