Just some advice converning the installation, the downloader/installer uses P2P and only looks at local connections through the client. I was only getting a max speed of about 20 kbps. If you open the torrent files from your hard drive and use your own bit torrent client (I use Vuze) you can connect to a lot more. I went from 4 local leechers to being connected to about 85 seeders and over 200 leechers. My speed jumped to about 300 kbps.
After you download the patch simply copy it into the appropriate "patch" folder and you should be good to go.

You don't get the torrent from any site. You download the installer from the beta site. It's the installer that's ultra slow, at least while downloading the main patch, which is about 4gb.
After you've downloaded the installer go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME on your computer\My Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\d96437e6\metainfo
In that folder there are 6 torrent files that the beta is using to download the patches. Find the torrent named H2010.08.30.2000 or thereabouts. It will be the big one, around 95kb compared to the rest which are 1kb. Then just open that torrent in your torrent client. Way faster than Square's installer.
After you're done downloading that, place the file in C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME on your computer\My Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta\d96437e6\patch
Run the installer again and it should recognize that you have that big file, and it should be able to handle the rest of them, they're a lot smaller.

I played it some this morning. It is a pretty game, and the gameplay is (in my opinion) infinitely better than FFXI.
There are only two negatives for me. One is that at the beginning of the game you are dumped out into a massive city with almost no direction. To someone not familiar with most MMO's, this can cause some issues.
The other negative is the campaign against "hardcore" players. You obtain quests called "leves" from a counter. You then go to a crystal in a certain place to activate the quest, then go kill/farm whatever it is you need to farm. THAT part is ultra fun. The bad part is that you can only complete 8 of these every 48 hours. I picked up three quests and had completed them in 10 minutes. Mind you this is solo play.
When you start a quest you can choose between 5 difficulty levels. It goes from solo play to groups of 15 people. The higher the difficulty, the better the rewards. Each person can complete each others quests, so you have the potential of doing a total of 120 (15 people x 8 quests) quests if you have a full group of 15. This could totally fill 48 hours of time before the reset, but the trick is to actually FIND those people this early in the game.
The game has a lot of potential, I just wish they enabled you to solo more effectively. They say it is to prevent the hardcore crowd from getting too powerful too fast, but I see the method they are using as counter productive. You will still have hardcore people, but instead of soloing themselves up to high level they will simply group up with 14 other hardcore people and get the better rewards.

First impression is that it doesn't have much to recommend it over any other MMO, apart from FF fan zeal. I imagine there's probably a lot of depth for intrepid fans, but my Final Fantasy love has waned to the point that I don't feel the inclination to play this, let alone pay for it.

I just left the installer open all day while I did other things. I tried using my own torrent file but it wasn't working. Apparently some programs can't run the file.

I found myself fairly bored after I completed my guildleve quests. I went and grinded in a little spot I found without a lot of people, and gained a couple of levels.
Then I discovered mining and crafting. I spent a good 3 hours mining and using blacksmithing, and I have to say I am impressed. I was gaining experience at a pretty good rate with no chance of dying. This is probably the first MMO I have seen that lets you level completely off of gathering or crafting, and I appreciate that. It doesn't feel like I am wasting my time when I am crafting or gathering, because I am progressing.

I tried it out a little a few days ago and I have to say it's not very intuitive. I find myself wondering what the heck I'm supposed to do next. There's no way to know who to talk to that will actually give me something new to do, I can't figure out a way to resize the map so I can see where I need to go when I *do* have a quest. They definitely need to add some more visual indicators, and something about combat doesn't mesh well with me, probably because of the insane lag. I know the goal is to tax the servers though, so I'm willing to let that one slide.

Yeah, the questing system needs a lot more compassing. The map is frustrating to use as you cannot look at the neighboring areas, you have to click on places you have been and then it jumps to there, but then you cannot see your position relative to where you are looking so it's a nightmare trying to figure out where you should go unless you try to read the fake English names of places.
I hate how there are no keyboard hotkeys for the menu functions, or if there are, I can't find them. Lag actually hasn't been a problem for me, but I did pick a low population server. They could do a lot more to help you know how to repair, use the bazaar, retainers, and where to go so as to purchase certain things. They have all these guilds that offer you benefits if you join them, but they don't tell you how to join them or how to get their marks.
The fighting system has been kinda fun so far, and I like the idea that any character can do any class, but the game does an inadequate job of helping people acclimatize to the game. There's nothing fun about running around talking to random people hoping they have something for you to do.
