I remember long ago, people were putting a nice price tag for earth.. and even though I was little then, I was appaled. It's the only thing we are capible of living on (that is known) and yet people thought liek everything else you could slide a price tag on it and people are going to be fine with it /:

The Earth is more valuable than anything, and we abuse it ;-;

I'm a bit puzzled as to what sort of discussion you're hoping to generate here.

The Earth is not 'more valuable than anything'. It is, though, extremely, really, very valuable. Too valuable for trite sentimentality, I think.

Considering it's the only known planet to contain life; so far; putting the price on Earth is the same as putting a price on a living thing, which is done quite frequently, though life is worth more than any amount of money.

On the other hand, I've been informed that the world is not enough.

The Earth is responsible for virtually all the knowledge we have and we shot respect by littering..and putting a price on it; hippy thread.

Heck yeah. And it's like a double rainbow. What does it mean!!!???

It's like Gaia . . . a lifeforce . . . or whatever. Man.

You left out Chi and Karma, but the world turns and we live; let's not forget that.

May I ask what people and when? Honestly, I have no memory of this ever being a wide spread public discussion. I agree its kind of a silly discussion since a price implies trade value. It absurd to even discuss a trade value for the earth since everything we can trade at this point in human history is literally part of the earth.

What was the context of the this discussion? Could this be some sort of distorted childhood memory that might have been something quite different from what you thought it was?

Once, somebody said this ridiculous thing. It was ridiculous. Ridiculous, I tells ya!

We actually believe that there's another planet that fits the criteria for supporting life albeit only along the equator as we think its tidal locked.

I submit that everything has a price tag, though not always recognized, universally accepted, or representative of actual value.

I just used a post-it note to put a price tag of $2 on the Earth.

Ok, but the guy down the street is willing to take $1.50. How about I give you a buck and a quarter, and you throw in the moon for free?

If the Earth is invaluable than so is everything on it...

As for source, it was an article about all the materials total cost.... something like 1.2 (or maybe even 7.2) trillion dollars or some crap ~.~ hard to try to find a source when I recall from memory

Nah. You were really paying for shipping and handling.

1.2 trillion is small potatoes, roughly half the size of China's foreign reserves.

7.2 trillion is on the order of America's debt roughly toward the end of 2003

Find another habitable planet, and Earth's value will drop.

Find thousands of habitable planets, and pretty soon planets would be privately owned.

Shouldn't invaluable be the opposite of valuable?

That's funny. I heard the exact opposite. Some guy told me that the world was too much (especially with us).

The handling fees are totally bogus too. I know how that stuff was "handled". Unsanitary doesn't even cover it.

Are you suggesting that my soil isn't sanitary? Now that you mention it, it does look a little dirty, I guess.

And when Blayne says "We believe" and appears to be using either the royal We or else speaking for the whole human species, one should keep in mind that he actually means "Some scientists have suggested as a wild speculation".

And, if it was tidal-locked, it wouldn't be habitable along the equator, but along a meridian.

No, That's the bag labeled "organic fertilizer" not "potting soil".
