Might be nice to say looking back at 2010 if there is anything you are proud of in particular or that just stood out.

Personally, I'm proud I wrote a book and was a somewhat good friend to those around me.

I'm proud I made major steps in my career and moved to New York even though it would have been easier to stay at home.

I'm proud to have the privilege of moderating a community that is such a huge boon in my life.

Also, I was very proud to find that when placed in a circumstance where I was totally on my own without friends or supervision, that I was able to thrive.

I'm proud I started working out with a personal trainer, have stuck with it for 6 months, and am much stronger and healthier now as a result (if not much thinner)!

I'm proud that I've never given up, even when things were hard.

I'm proud I wrote more stories, and filmed the most ambitious student film I've done yet. (Even if the result isn't great.)

I'm proud I made new friends, and did my best to make up with old ones I'd lost.

I'm proud that I stuck it out even when things were hard and finished three semesters toward my master's degree.

I'm proud I never gave up and kept applying and kept trying to get a job even when things were bleak.

I'm proud that I have managed to do a decent job in difficult circumstances so far this school year.

I'm proud of my family, and the way they've pulled together to support each other after a recent tragedy.

I wrote several short stories I am proud of, even if they aren't published (and I think one at least needs some skimming- lose a few hundred words). I sewed my first quilt which was a lot of work (twin size quilt). And I had a baby- I don't know if I can be proud of it, but it is a good use of my time.

After nearly 13 years of smoking, I finally quit at the end of January, and have actually not had a cigarette, or a drag off a cigarette since.

This is a great thread! So many people have done amazing things this year.

Is it okay to mention other people we're proud of? My oldest daughter has received four full tuition scholarship offers. We're mulling over which one to accept.

My husband was named Paramedic of the year by the regional medical association due to his dedication to education and mentoring of younger medics and his high resuscitation rates using new cardiac drugs in the field.

I'm proud that after 26 years of teaching that I've tried some things that really push my comfort zone out pretty far, and that they've actually worked with my fifth graders!

Destineer, the schools she has received scholarships to are the University of Alabama, University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), Troy University, and the University of North Alabama.

Her #1 choice is Ole Miss because of the reputation of their honors college. But we are hoping for them to offer a bit more to cover room and board too. So, we'll see. But regardless, I am extremely proud of her!

Thanks, guys! It was especially nice to win this prize because my advisor was the first honoree.

Belle, that's a wonderful set of choices. And though I don't know the southern universities as well as I should, it sounds like you have the right priorities. A good honors college can be paradise for a dedicated student. It makes a big difference at a large state school, where the top level students are normally very good and the weakest students can be very weak.

Congratulations to everyone!

I'm proud of the way homeschooling is going for my eldest two (my oldest is "official" now-- enrolled per the laws of the State of California in the TARDIS Academy, a private school duly established in our home. )

I'm proud of the fact that I have, during this pregnancy, been able to, with the help of Hypnobabies, overcome much of my trauma and PTSD from my separation from Maggie shortly after her birth, and become a more positive pregnant lady this time around than I have ever been (not to mention learned to control my own body with my mind so well that I've been much more comfortable.) It's pretty cool for me, though it may not seem big to anyone else.

I'm proud of the fact that I've been able to be the "bigger person" in several sensitive interpersonal situations that really hurt me, let go, and move on with what's important (again, not big for others, but big for me.)

I'm proud of many others around me, too, but those are the big ones for me.

I'm hesitant to post because I haven't actually done anything yet. But, I've put in notice at work and agreed to join Americorp. I'm moving to Montana in January to do data analysis for a financial literacy program.

I've lived in the Dallas area my entire life. I see my siblings and friends I've known since high school regularly. I've had a stable job for three and half years. It's a good life, but it's just felt so stagnant and lacking in direction for the past year or so. I'm proud of my decision to put my directionlessness to good use and hopefully get a great experience out of it.

I'm proud of all of the children's lit that I've read in the last four months. I co-teach a reading class with the gifted teacher, and the kids all are reading different novels, some of which are in the 350 page range. I felt like I couldn't be a good teacher without having read what the kids are reading. I need to know what they've read so that I can talk to them about it! I've read over 50 books in these five months, and the kids are impressed that I can converse with all of them about all of these books. Even the gifted teacher hasn't read all of them yet!

Goodreads is a great site for readers. (I know some teachers use it as well as a classroom resource, but I expect your students are under the legal age (13)?)

I've been a member since mid-2007, a volunteer librarian (record-cleaner-upper) since late-2007, and a (very part-time) employee since mid-2008. I love the place.

Despite having a 2.8 GPA at the end of my Freshman year, I just graduated Cum Laude this semester (3.5 years total).

I wanted to be a sub during the interim period between grad school and graduating, since I am a mid-year graduate, but all the sub pools were full in my area. Turns out that my godbrother can get me a job at Citibank. So that's nice. It will be my first real job.


And I just received a phone call today that revealed that I have been recommended by the State department to Finland for a research Fulbright.

I got a Masters degree (barely meeting my goal of having it before age 22) and sucessfully taught at the college level for the first time.

Also, I also grew my hair out, succeeding at a New Years resolution from last year (the resolution was to let my hair grow for a year). I'm dangerously close to a cool, pirate-like ponytail. As it is I get equal parts "dirty hippy" and Jesus lookalike comments.

Thanks, Destineer. I'm obviously elated at this news (and so is my girlfriend, as she'll be taking out a loan and joining me if I get it). As for your question, I'm under the impression that 75% of applicants at this stage are accepted as primary candidates and the rest as back-ups, but I am not sure. I will be notified in the last week of January.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I think that I have a strong research proposal, which happens to be what I currently want my dissertation to be on. Here's question for you: If I get it (last week of January, mind you), should I notify universities to which I am applying? If so, then how? Would it make a difference in me getting in? Positively or negatively? Or is it just too late/they don't care?

Edit: And congratulations on the award. I tried reading the article, but even the abstract confused me. Alas, theoretical physics is not my forte--something that I will try to correct during my semester off, not to mention I'm cramming non-classical logics and contemporary theories of reference. It's going to be a busy "break". Perhaps I'll try again after the break and be able to understand your work then.

I don't think it would make a difference one way or another. It's probably a bit like telling them you've been accepted to another grad program.

You should tell programs that have admitted you immediately if/when you're award the Fulbright, because then you'll have to work out an arrangement to defer your admission. I wouldn't say anything about it before then.

Well, I'm not about to discourage anyone from reading my work. But philosophers of physics long ago came to terms with the fact that they were writing for a tiny audience, and even most of their philosophy friends would never read their papers. So, no obligation whatsoever.
