RULES:

TV shows only, no movies, no miniseries. No shows that fizzled after less than 6 episodes. Network, cable, internet-only are all fine. Shows from any country are also fine.

The average height for men in the US is roughly 5'10"; that for women is roughly 5'4". Those heights will be our benchmarks.

Only series regulars (for at least one season of the series) may be counted. No guest stars, no recurring characters. Actor must appear onscreen -- voice-only actors may not be counted. Any reasonable verification of height may be used.

Points will be awarded for inches over the men's average or under the women's (no points for fractional inches). So a male actor who is 6'2" is worth 4 points, and so is a female actor who is 5'0". 10 bonus points for each pair of male/female actors with a height differential of 15 inches or more.

You may include as many or as few series regulars are you like.

Ready?

I'll start us off.

Pushing Daisies

Lee Pace (Ned): 6'3"
Chi McBride (Emerson): 6'4.5"

Anna Friel (Chuck): 5'2"
Kristin Chenoweth (Olive): 4'11"

Points: Ned - 5, Emerson - 6, Chuck - 2, Olive - 5, and 10 bonus points
Total: 28

Chuck
Zachary Chuck : 6'4":
Sara: 5'9"
Adam Baldwin: 6'4"
Morgan: 5'7"

I'm scoring it differently than the OP: I picked 4 characters that are far away from the norm. I'm counting Morgan's shortness, even though he's a guy, and Sara's tallness, even though she's a gal.

Points: Chuck 6, Adam 6, Sara 5, Morgan 3.
Total: 20

eta: I think that I should get a bonus for having a female lead taller than the male lead equal to twice the difference. That would bring my total up to 24.

(Shows get point totals, not posters.)

Night Court

Harry Anderson (Harry): 6'4"
John Larroquette (Dan): 6'4.5"
Richard Moll (Bull): 6'8"
Charles Robinson (Mac): 6'3"
Selma Diamond (Selma): 5'2"*
Florence Halop (Florence): 4'10"*

*Diamond and Halop both refused to publicly admit to their heights. However, the photographic evidence implies heights of 5'0" and 4'8", respectively -- rounded up by 2 inches in each case to allow for a reasonable margin of error

Points: Harry - 6, Dan - 6, Bull - 10, Mac - 5, Selma 2, Florence - 6, and 20 bonus points
Total: 55

If you can use as many characters as you want, then this could turn into a contest of which TV show has the most series regulars.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

At least those who are uncommonly tall or short. Night Court had way more regulars than that, but they were all women who were average or taller.

I call Castle. (Goes to check, still doesn't understand the rules)

Actually, too many of these actors don't have heights in a reputable source.

Supernatural

Jared Padalecki 6'4

Jensen Ackles 6'1

Jim Beaver 6'1

Misha Collins 5'11

Total score= 13

Started out strong with an all male main cast but the premise of the show doesnt allow for a large cast, I dont think twelve episodes is enough to include some of the others.

I am not interested in playing at the moment (maybe later), but I will mention that these kinds of silly games are one of the things I miss about hatrack past.

So kudos!

Me too! I've been trying to think of a good one for a while. [Smile]

I sort of agree. (Although I love Doris Roberts, I hate her in that role. She was way better as Mildred.) But it's an excellent contender for this game. [Wink]

Life Unexpected

Kristoffer Polaha (Nate, aka Baze): 6'3"
Kerr Smith (Ryan): 6'.5"
Austin Basis (Math): 6'2"

Brittany Robertson (Lux): 5'2.5"
Shiri Appleby (Cate): 5'3"

Points: Baze - 5, Ryan - 2, Math - 4, Lux - 1, Cate - 1
Total: 13
Looking at cast shots I would expect this show to score much higher.

Dibs on Lost and Heroes! (Just because they have an absolutely massive cast of regulars)

This is going to take me the better part of an hour....Better get to work.

I presume that since we are using the average height for adults that child actors would not be acceptable. If not, there are many points to be earned from shows with a bunch of child stars.

Correct.

The Addams family:

Ted Cassidy: 6 ft 9 in

Felix Silla 3' 11"

Does the short short have to be a woman? How sexist.

Not by mu rules. See Chuck above.

Only in that natural averages for the human species are sexist.

Angel

David Boreanaz - 6'1"
Alexis Denisof - 6'2"
J. August Richards = 6'3"
Andy Hallett - 6'2"

Darn it... Why are Joss' women so TALL? Buffy's 5'4", but the rest of them are around 5'8".

Yes, but the rules could have asked for men below the average, and women above the average, or either men or women below or above the average.

The point as I see it is the difference from the norm, not the tendency for women to be shorter than men.

I don't understand this game. The Rules tell me how to score points but I don't understand the goal.

The goal is to think of TV shows that have high scores. And to have fun doing it.

M*A*S*H

Hawkeye (Alan Alda) - 6'2
Trapper (Wayne Rogers)- 6'3
B.J (Mike Farrel) - 6'3
Winchester (David Ogden Stiers) - 6'4
Frank Burns (Larry Linville) - 6'1

Total: 23

Not many egregiously short people on that show... probably because being short was Radar's gig, and he was 5'5.

I can't take the time right now, but someone run a total for Saturday Night Live. That's got to be in the hundreds.

Stargate SG-1
(only counting team members lasting more than one season, including movies as +season [sorry, Jonas!])

Richard Dean Anderson: 6'1
Amanda Tapping: 5'9
Christopher Judge: 6'3
Michael Shanks: 6'0
Ben Browder: 6'1
Claudia Black: 5'8

Total: 22

(I was going to add Teryl Rothery and try to get the 15-inch-difference bonus, but she's only 5'2, which is 13 inches shorter than Christopher Judge's 6'3. Alas!)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Nicholas Brendon (Xander) 5'11" = 1

Anthony Head (Giles) 6'1" = 3

David Boreanaz (Angel) 6'1" = 3

D. B. Woodside (Principal Woods) 6'3" = 5

Alexis Denisof (Westley) 6'2" = 4

Marc Blucas (Riley) 6'2" = 4

Mark Metcalf (the Master) 6'2" = 4

Total = 24

Not sure if all these characters count as "series regulars" vs "recurring characters". We shall let the judges decide.

West Wing (using the original rules)

Bradley Whitford: 5'11
Rob Lowe - 5'11
Jimmy Smits: 6'3
Alan Alda: 6'2
Kristin Chenoweth: 4'11

Total: 26

However, if you get to include tall women (which West Wing has a lot of if you look at the whole cast, but limited to regulars):

Mary McCormack: 5'8
Allison Janney: 6'0
Janel Moloney: 5'8

And short men:

John Spencer: 5'7
Martin Sheen : 5'7
Joshua Malina: 5'9

That adds 23 pts, for a total of 49. On the flip side, if you are penalized for actors who go the other way (tall shorts and short talls), then the point total is 3.

Yes, but the rules could have asked for men below the average, and women above the average, or either men or women below or above the average.
Then everyone who isn't within one inch of average counts, and it becomes all about which shows have the most regulars.

Not what I had in mind. But hey, this is Hatrack -- y'all will do what you want regardless.

Were they in the weekly opening credits, or listed as guests just in those shows in which they appeared?

Or just limited to the one character who is the most above average, and one character who is the most below average, as I did above. The only problem was that they were both male.

Even keeping the shortest character female and the tallest character male, shows with large casts seem to bypass the spirit of the game. But it could just as easily have been the shortest male, and tallest female, it's the difference from the norm makes it interesting.

Wait, are we scoring women above average?

I'm having a hard time finding women below 5'4".

Pit boss:

Luigi Francis Shorty Rossi 4' .5"
Sebastian Saraceno can't find a height listed but short.
Ronald Lee Clark, same. All are around 4 foot.

Edit: Oops, you wanted taller guys. Duh.
