I tried to watch Torchwood once, and couldnt stand it. But the basic premise of that promo might allow me to check it out.

You should give the 3rd season a try. It is really good and only five episodes, where each episode is a day.
It is utterly fantastic.

It was the very first episode that discouraged me, once again very interesting premise with all the children stopping dead in thier tracks and what not but I cant stand that quality of acting. Declaring the American magnificent and beuatiful repeatedly doesnt make it so and came across as heavy handed story telling.
And a completely personal note, re-watch that first episode and towards the end the two men set off at a desperate run. I cant take a show seriously after watching them run like that.
