Dims/orange-shifts your screen gradually during evening-night to dynamically reduce eye strain, its pretty nifty. I immediately notice the difference, may even help me sleep easier, seems to be some accompanying sleep analysis data/research with it going on.

Enjoy.

If you want to sleep easier, take your computer out of your bedroom and don't use it after a specific bedtime.

Lol no? I need the sound of the fans to sleep.

Why not get an actual fan? It'll save energy.

I wish there was an emoticon that stood for a totally blank expression.

Better question, if the screens are "off" when I go to sleep, where does it matter where they are located?

That and well, for the love of god, criticizing having my expensive computer(s) in my own room is pretty stupid thing to do. Aside from basic right to privacy and not having people look over my shoulder all the time if I was in a more public part of the house (that and needing a locked door for when I'm not home, ie the lesson learned when my PS3 was stolen) some of us don't keep "physical" bedtime material just so you know.

Yeah, I keep computers on for convenience.

Because if you have sleeping problems or insomnia, the first thing you should always do is remove electronics from your bedroom. Conveniently, it is even specifically indicated for people with aspbergers. No jokes.

Of course, even if you do have a sleep schedule problem, you will, of course, find a way to insist that there's no way you can take this good advice. So, yeah.

My sleep problems are related to breathing issues not electronics being in the room. I've actually gone to a sleep specialist and had sleep examination (where they test your sleeping with both a breathing apparatus and without one), its related to difficulty breathing at night due to weight not to whatever you suppose the issue is.

The sound of raining and the sound of my fans helps me sleep. I also use my computer as my alarm clock (because I can choose which song to wake up to) and for convenience.

(Also my sleep problems predate me having a computer or any electronics of anykind in my sleeping quarters, ever since early high school I've had sleeping issues.)

Then why do you think that dimming your monitor in the evening might help you sleep better?

Posted by Blayne Bradley (Member # 8565) on :

Because there seems to have some evidence that bright monitors at night delay the feeling of "being tired" and thus prolong your time spent awake (today though I took a nap expecting some late night conversations with some japanese people on skype, so i'm still awake for other reasons) which compounds an already existing problem.

Dimmer screens means tired much sooner and thus more naturally earlier sleeping times; like the difference between "safe sex" (which is zero sex) and "safER sex" (protection), moving the electronics in ->THEORY<- may solve that *one* issue, it isn't actually the underlying problem and would be incredibly inconvenient to the point of impractical regardless, to move them out. So A solution that solves 80% of a unrelated problem is >good enough< and very nifty.

Hey Blayne, thanks for posting this. I've been trying it out for the past day, and it seems to be reducing eye strain.

Blayne -- what program do you use for an alarm clock? I'd be curious to experiment with that and my laptop when I'm not on the road.
