My top five favorite games:

1. Mass Effect 2
2. Halo: CE (the first game)
3. Uncharted 2
4. Final Fantasy 9
5. Assassin's Creed 2

What about you guys? I'm always looking for new recommendations on what to play. I just bought one called Heavy Rain on the PS3, but I've only played about an hour so far.

Half Life 2 and the Portals are some of the best games ever, IMO. I haven't played 4 of your 5, so that should give you an idea how much weight to give my opinion. [Big Grin]

I'ld say HL2, Portal, I think Reccetear is cute, Magicka is hilariously fun. I like Mass Effect, I like Neverwinter Nights 2, I like Civ4, Men of War is a nice compromise between Close COmbats realism and Company of Heroe's arcade feel.

Oh and Hoi2, EU3, Victoria 2 etc.

Supreme Commander is nice though kinda flawed in its implementation, SupCom2 was fine on its own merits but as a total annilihiation sequel it sucked.

Dwarf Fortress, Starcraft and EVE Online should go without saying.

Right now I'm exploring Visual Novels, yes including eroges.

Final Fantasys 4 and 6, but especially 6. Chrono Trigger. Those RPGs hit the sweet spot of not only being really awesome, but also coming out during the time of my youth when I was most into video games.

I spent thousands of hours playing the original Mario Kart, and then Mario Kart 64 after that. Those were great games to play against your friends.

Loved all the NES and SNES side-scrolling Metroidvania action games and shooters. Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Metroid, and Castlevania all had fantastic games in their franchises. The Zelda games of course, especially Link to the Past for SNES. Really there are just way too many games I loved from that generation to name them all.

From this gen: Bioshock, Mass Effect (love that soundtrack), Street Fighter 4, Assassin's Creed 2, various downloadable games, and so on and etc.

1. An amazing game. Easily the best written CRPG I've ever had the pleasure of playing.
2. You always liked Grim Fandango more than I did. I found the controls on it pretty frustrating, and I'm only somewhat fond of the genre. Within the genre, I'd say that my favorite game was probably The Last Express, with The Longest Journey being a somewhat distant second.
3. I enjoyed Hithchiker's Guide, but I don't even think I'd put it in my top 5 within the genre. Suspended and Trinity are probably my two favorite text adventures, with Enchanter, The Witness, and Beyond Zork taking the lower three spots. I enjoyed Leather Goddesses of Phobos, but I suspect that it wouldn't hold up were I to replay it as an adult.
4. I never played Freespace 2. I wonder if it's available on GOG?
5. I loved Civ 2, and one of my all-time-greatest computer gaming moments happened while playing this game, but I preferred Civ 3 (with it modified such that courthouses kept corruption down to a reasonable level in the further flung reaches of my empire)
6. Portal was a lot of fun. It's definitely a game that's going to be rightfully looked back on as a classic.
7. I never played Planetfall back in the day. I messed with it briefly in college, and thought that it seemed like it would be fun, but I never got around to giving it a serious play-through.
8. Plants versus Zombies is fun, and is probably the best tower defense game that I've played, but I'm surprised to see it in a 10 best games of all time list. Why do you like it so much?
9. Baldur's Gate 2 was a fantastic game. I've been thinking about getting it from GOG and replaying it.
10. I didn't play Fallout when it was new. I downloaded it a while back, and found the interface to be frustratingly clumsy. I'm sure the interface was good when it came out, but it really drove home for me how far things have come in that regard. I still intend to give it a play-through, but for now it's sitting on my virtual shelf.

My top ten list (not necessarily in any particular order):
1. M.U.L.E
2. Suspended
3. Trinity
4. X-COM: UFO Defense
5. Fantasy General
6. Alpha Centauri
7. Civ IV's Fall From Heaven 2 total conversion mod
8. Portal
9. Planescape: Torment
10: Baldur's Gate 2
11. Dungeon Master
12. The Last Express

Okay, that was 12. I admit it.

I was so torn about Alpha Centauri. I have to admit that I found both The Last Express and Trinity a bit dull, for all that they tried (and for all that I can recognize that they're great games); I think I like my adventure games with a bit more broad humor in them. [Smile]

Dungeon Keeper scores points for a great concept, sadly let down by a weak core gameplay mechanic. And as much as I loved X-COM, I felt about its interface the way you must feel about Fallout's. *grin*

Plants vs. Zombies is on there because it's quite possibly the best example of how tone and polish -- and a focus on a single gripping mechanic, to which complexity is slowly added -- can elevate an otherwise middling game. (Going farther back, consider Tetris.) Angry Birds is another good example. The reaction of my kids to these games no doubt biases me a bit. [Smile]

(And, yes, not only can you get Freespace 2 from GOG, but the devs released the source code a few years back and consequently it's been actively modded to support modern graphics cards. Check this out:
http://scp.indiegames.us/screenshots.php )

So many of my "greatest games" depend on, as you mentioned, great game moments. There's a moment in Freespace 2 (mild spoiler) when you encounter the first Shivan capital ship and realize that it's easily ten times larger than anything you've seen before, and almost everything you've seen already dwarfs your tiny fighter.

My initial list. Probably will change a lot as I remember other games.

1 Diablo II
2 Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
3 Planescape: Torment
4 Starcraft
5 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
6 Warcraft III
7 Knights of the Old Republic
8 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
9 World of Warcraft
10 Portal
11 Diablo
12 Final Fantasy VI (called III in the US)
13 Dragon Age: Origins
14 Warcraft II
15 Empire: Total War
16 Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
17 GoldenEye 007
18 Mortal Combat II
19 Star Fox
20 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Edit: Looking at others' lists, I'd forgotten the original Fallout. That'd probably be in the top 10 somewhere.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who preferred the first Mass Effect to the second, but I enjoyed them both. I haven't played the second Assassin's Creed yet, but I loved the first one, so I'm pumped to give it a shot.

A friend was playing Heavy Rain a while ago, and he really enjoyed it. I managed to watch a fair bit of his playing (right near the end, so I'm not going to say anything about what/who I saw), and it was pretty spectacular-looking, so do keep going with it.

2. Goldeneye
3. Super Smash Brothers (first 2)
4. Gauntlet Dark Legacy
5. Kirby Air Ride
6. Mario Kart (64 and double dash)
7. Mario Party (all of them)
8. Pokemon Snap
9. Halo 2
10. FIFA (all of them)

Yeah I have some strange videogame taste.

1) Halo: CE (the first was the best...it was just groundbreaking
2) Halo 3; I spent a lot of time on the Multiplayer with friends
3) Fable 1 & 3; I thought 2 was disappointing, but still a fun game
4) Half Life
5) Mario Kart 64, We played that one for hours and hours in college
6) Bioshock, I tore through that game. The second didn't hook me as much, but it was still fun

Some other games I really enjoyed, in random order: Fallout 3, Goldeneye, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Rainbow 6, Gears of War

Super Mario Galaxy.
Super Mario Bros. 3.

I'm not a first-person shooter fan, and I hate having a lot of buttons and weapons/moves to keep track of. Nintendo does the simple yet imaginative game better than anyone, IMO, and did these better than anything else.

In no order:

1) Grim Fandango
2) Star Control 2
3) Doctor Mario (better multiplayer mechanic edges out Tetris)
4) Bionic Commando NES
5) Rock Band series
6) Ultima IV
7) Mario Kart/Mario Kart 64
8) Super Smash Brothers (first couple of games); only fighting games I've ever had fun playing
9) Warlords II
10) Addams Family Pinball

6. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
7. Super Smash Bros. Melee

9. Mario RPG
10. Harvest Moon (PSX)

2) Shivers
3) Zelda (pick any of them except Majora's Mask)
4) Oblivion
5) Morrowind

I'm rather inexperienced with video games, and I'm seeking to remedy that now (Though college keeps interfering.)

LoZ Majora's mask is easily my favorite video game. By leaps and bounds. I never understood why others hated it so much.

For me: (I'm an RPG nut)

1) Xenogears - Hands down the best RPG story ever written. It wasn't the best implemented (Disc 2 storytelling) but man is it a good game.

2) Xenosaga series (Storyline here as well)

3) Mass Effect Series

4) Planetscape Torment

5) Diablo Series

6) Heavy Rain - It is groundbreaking, and is as much a psychological profiling program as it is a game

7) Final Fantasy 6

8) Exitilus - I used to dial into a local BBS every day to play this in the mid 90's.

9) Asheron's Call - It was my first MMO, and no game since has been more in depth.

10) Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross - Its only #10 because I want another damn sequel already.

It's been long enough that I don't remember why I didn't like it. MM and Phantom Hourglass are the two Zelda games I haven't enjoyed enough to finish.

It's not horrible, but I find it slow. Maybe it's just the setting but I just couldn't get into the slow pace. I'd say rent it first, you could get through it in a weekend.

My top 10
1) Command and Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour
2) Halo Reach and the Halo series
3) Mario Kart N64
4) Batman Arkum Asylum
5) Super Mario Bros. 3
6) Mirrors Edge
7) Call of Duty: MW2
8) Goldeneye
9) Gears of War
10) Street Fighter II

Amazon has LA Noire for $45 this week. I am really enjoying it. It's similar to old point and click adventure games as opposed to current day open world sandbox games, so don't go into it expecting GTA 1947. I am not certain there is much in the way of replay value but I am enjoying playing it through once.

Man, now THAT would be awesome! Running around town with a tommy gun, chasing down Al Capone and Frank Sinatra. OK, so maybe not 1947. Maybe it would be somewhere around 1930? Still, it would be a good change from the current GTA series.

My top 10 in no order:

1) The Legend of Zelda - I remember being told about naming my character Zelda to jump straight to the 2nd quest so I did that as soon as I got the game. It was 3 or 4 years before I went back and played the first quest. It was like playing a brand new game. I still play back through at least one of the quests about once a year. Perfect as far as I am concerned.

2) Super Mario Bros. 3 - My sister and I would leave our Nintendo on while we were at school in order to not lose our progress when we first got it. I got this game for my birthday the year it came out and played it regularly up until the day I put my NES in storage. I have since bought it on GBA, and Wiiware. I love this game.

3) Sam and Max Hit the Road - Out of all point and click adventure games this one was hands down my favorite and also the funniest. I still quote it from time to time.

4) Fallout 3 - I have more time logged on this game than any other and I still haven't explored any of the DLC. I am hoping to take care of that this summer. I borrowed a copy of Oblivion months before playing this and I just could not get into the medieval setting. It's just not my thing, but I loved walking around in this post-war world and discovering new places all over the map.

5) Ico - I fell in love with this game when it first came out on the PS2 in the states. I love the world, the slower pacing and feeling of loneliness I get when I play this game. By the time Shadow of the Colossus came out I no longer had a PS2 but I look forward to playing it when it's re-released this September.

6) Robocop - The 1988 DATA EAST Arcade Game - It's a phoned in side scrolling action game but I love this thing. Anytime I am in an old coin op arcade or pizza place or whatever I feel compelled to sink my coins into it. A shovelful of nostalgia helps me see past this games shortcomings.

7) Under a Killing Moon - I only recently acquired the other Tex Murphy games on GOG but haven't gotten around to playing them yet. I remember being very impressed with the FMV in this game and loved the setting and nearly everything about it. I wanted to BE Tex Murphy.

8) Rock Band series - It's the only game that my wife asks me to play and it allows me to play with my friends elsewhere. Great way to socialize with friends.

9) King's Quest V - This was given to my by a family friend and it was unlike anything I'd played before. I loved the exploring and even the frustrating trial and error "Try This Thing with that Thing" gameplay. When I Bought the KQ Collection off of Steam last year it was the only game I played.

10) Quake - I spent countless hours in my room in high school deathmatching in Quake. I liked the skin customization made available and everything about it was a blast. It was also the last FPS multiplayer I was any good at. When Quake 2 came around I had gotten too busy to play much deathmatch and in college it wasn't really my thing. By the time I came back to the genre I had been left behind and anytime I jump online in any game I own I get creamed. Quake was my glory days and I still enjoy the Single Player campaign.

In no particular order, my top twelve:

•Call of Duty series (4 MW is the best)
•Warcraft Series (I, II and WoW...III can suck it)
•UFO Afterlight (Xcom retooled)
•Culdcept Saga (MagicTG meets Monopoly, so fun)
•MassEffect series (annoyed that the text in 2 is so unreadable in nonHD)
•Halo series (1-3 awesome, never played the others)
•Galactic Empires II (Masters of Orion II retooled)
•Morrowind/Oblivion
•Spider Solitare (strange, but I always come back for more and love it)
•Plants vs Zommbies
•Dwarf Fortress

I plan to drive 180 miles just to play Gears Of War 3 with my brother when it comes out. The co-op in the last two is so well designed that it accomplishes what Halo never could, its more fun to play the whole way through with two people. It should be a nice bit of marathon gaming come October.

I really appreciated that CoD MW2 had the coop online option, so no 180 mile drive necessary.

My favorite games of all time are Dark Age of Camelot, Red Alert 2, and Diablo II.

I am enjoying Castle Crashers, Sword and Soldiers, and have a fond place in my hear for Guild Wars.

I just bought Uncharted Waters: New horizon for my Wii and am casually playing as Ali Vezas.

Right now I have 1500 Wii points and am not sure what to buy. Should I get a few 500 wii point original Nintendo titles like Super Mario 3? Maybe Nobunaga's Ambition? NyxQuest on the WiiWare?

By genre:

RPG - Final Fantasy VI. Edges out Chrono Trigger. I was probably the perfect age for this game. It really hit me emotionally.

Adventure - Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Super Metroid comes in second.

Strategy - Sim City 2000. I sunk SO much time into this game, over and over and over. Civilization 2 as runner up.

FPS - Halo, followed by Goldeneye.

RTS - Starcraft.

Dungeon-crawler - Diablo II. Yes, I added this genre just to include this game. When III comes out I will never be heard from again.

Fighter - Super Smash Bros. Easy to pick up, difficult to master, almost unlimited replay value. Kirby, ftw. Marvel vs.Capcom 2 as runner up.

Flight Simulator - Star Wars: TIE Fighter. I near drove myself crazy beating some of those missions.

Some honorable mentions:
Minecraft
Super Mario World
King's Quest series
Pikmin
Oregon Trail
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Mega Man X
Secret of Mana
EVO: the Search for Eden

It is a great game to play with younger nephews. Nothing is quite as rewarding as jumping up and continually hacking a knight as you fly across the screen. How can you not love the level where all the animals are pooping in fear of the end boss?

It's a loaded comparison. Because 1 is kind of broker and 2 is just simple.

My list
Starcraft 2
SC Brood War
Halflife 2
Chrono Trigger
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
CIV 4/5
Baldur's Gate 2
Starfox 64
Goldeney (And I think that its still really, unlike almost everyone else)
Super Metroid

Over the years, I've filtered Twisted Metal, MvCapcom, NBA Street, MK64 because most of them are too dumb fun, and MK64, despite having a perfect battlemode, isnt as good as MKDS. Pokemon Jak 3 RE4 and the best marios also fill out my top 20.

Lumines used to also be there.

I really need to try Dwarf Fortress Blayne.

Posted by Stone_Wolf_ (Member # 8299) on :

Oh oh oh, I missed Mech Warrior 3...best mech game EVER...you get to build better and bigger mechs as you capture parts, great controls, multiple strategies and a really immersive game world.

DwarfFort is very enjoyable, but has a HUGE learning curve. My problem was that by the time I got really going on this game, they came out with a huge overhaul and I just didn't have it in me to relearn everything. Also, unlike most games, DF has very few goals that are straight forward...it's more of a sim then a game. Sometimes a little direction is helpful.

In no particular order:

LoZ: Majora's Mask
Starfox 64
LoZ: Wind Waker
Fallout: New Vegas
Starcraft 2
Minecraft
Mass Effect series. (1 more than 2)
Settler's series
ES3 Morrowind+Bloodmoon
Galactic Civ 2

There are tons more but these are the ones right off the top of my head.

Hmm...

Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. I'll go ahead and say I enjoyed the first one more too, though I also love the second one. I still haven't beat the second on Insane though, while I've done that multiple times with the first.

Portal 1 and 2. Again I'll prefer the first one, but I did love the second as well.

Knights of the Old Republic. Mmm. I might need to go play this again.

Final Fantasy XII (12, btw, not X-2). The first game I put 100+ hours into, so it has sentimental value, though its not really that amazing of a game.

Medieval: Total War 1 and 2. I personally preferred the first one. I liked the look of the old map instead of the new terrain.

Oblivion. The Thieves Guild final quest is still possibly the most fun I've had playing a video game in one sitting.

Assassins Creed 2. Just a fun game to play.

Bioshock. Funny story. I played this game while leaning up against a cushion that a cat had...erm...urinated on and then been doused in febreeze. And that still didn't detract from the game. And now, whenever I smell cat urine, or way too much febreeze, or some combination of the two, it takes me back to Rapture. In a good way. I think.

Eve Online does deserve a mention, though I sometimes loathe it as well as love it.

And finally...

The Commander Keene series. I think 3 was my favorite. My introduction to the wonderful world of computer games. Though now I'm more of a console gamer, Commander Keene has a special place in my heart.

Especially when that partner is your brother who lives such a distance away. While I know that he is cheap and I will end up paying for everything, its worth the trip.

I'm gonna avoid putting my favorite games in a "top ten" form, mainly because I go through certain moods to play certain things which makes me enjoy/think higher about specific games. There is also the difficulty in comparing games of different genres and also the generation of gamer that I grew up in. I'd also feel like I'd have to write a paragraph/love song about each game if i really wanted to do this proper. So, to keep it short and sweet and to just throw out the most meaningful games to me:

The greatst game of all time is without a doubt Ocarina of Time. Trying to explain the greatness that is this game is difficult because I would simply be saying things like "the story was awesome, the graphics were awesome, the interface is awesome, the asthetics are awesome, etc." It will allways be the benchmark that I will compare the action/adventure RPG to.

The Fanal Fantasy games are a big part of my gaming life. The amount of hours i have put into them is embarassingly high. To me there were only 2 that truely disapointed me(excepting sequels and spinoffs) and that would be FFV and FFXIII. I never liked VI, but not because I thought it was bad... I just couldnt get into it for some reason. VII, VIII, and IX are the ones that mean the most to me and are the ones I enjoy the most.

Super Mario 3 and 64 are pretty amazing games as well. I didnt get into too many platforming types but those two stand out as games that I spent a lot of time on and got a lot of enjoyment out of.

Silent Hill would also have to be on my list of best games. I've never been so unnerved/creeped out/immersed in a gaming world.

Galaga and Golden Axe remain my favorite arcade games, though admittedly i didnt spend alot of time at arcades.

Starcraft and Medieval: Total war 2 are my favorite strategy games.

Of recent games Bioshock and Mass Effect really stick out as games that grabbed my attention and fulfilled my enjoyment.

I should throw EVE in there only because it is so fascinating and has been recently a major part of my time. It is far from being a perfect game... though I'm not sure that any MMO can really compete in any sort of "best game" contest since much of the content (in EVE, an even greater amount) and game experience is user-generated.

I think im going to stop there.... The more games I list the more I remember/think of games that I really liked or had a special connection to. These are just games that make my list without even trying to think.

My friend lent me Bioshock and just said, "You'll like it." So I go to play it...something about the 50's naivete turned sinister, the gore and maniacal laughter just creeped me out major. Gave me nightmares. I stopped playing it almost immediately, and didn't go back and finish it for months.

I can understand that. I think that the artwork and the voice acting, combined with moving through a gameworld in which time was passing and opportunities could be missed really sucked me into the Last Express.

:: laugh :: I can completely understand that. If I'd come to X-COM now I'd probably be equally frustrated by its interface. It's incredibly clunky. I much prefer the interface for Jagged Alliance 2. It isn't perfect by any means, but it's better than X-COM's. I always wished that they'd do a tactical, turn-based isometric view dungeon crawl using a modernized version of the X-COM or Jagged Alliance 2 engine.

[qoute]Plants vs. Zombies is on there because it's quite possibly the best example of how tone and polish -- and a focus on a single gripping mechanic, to which complexity is slowly added -- can elevate an otherwise middling game. [/quote]

I can see that. It isn't enough to catapult it onto my top 12 list, but I can understand where you're coming from.

And, yes, not only can you get Freespace 2 from GOG, but the devs released the source code a few years back and consequently it's been actively modded to support modern graphics cards. Check this out:

Holy crap; that looks gorgeous. I'll have to download it and give it a spin.

Lol, yeah the story is pretty mediocre in that game, but man that job class system is awesome. Same goes for Final Fantasy Tactics.
I was at my cousins place the other day, and she was playing on her PS3. She had actually gone through the steps to play such an old game on her cutting edge system and shes not even much of a gamer. That says alot for FF Tactics.

How could I have forgotten Psychonauts? the level of dark comedic detail in that game is truely impressive.

Final Fantasy VI

Metal Gear Solid

Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 (both games contain lovely music)

Starcraft 2 (Back in November I randomly decided to buy this despite never having played an RTS before. I have since then probably sunk 400 hours into the multiplexer. Oddly enough, I haven't played the campaign. And I am forever stuck in Gold. [Frown] )

League of Legends (I discovered this free game 2 months ago and it actually made me quit SC2 for a while. Being on the winning in this game feels absolutely great. The flip-side is that being on the losing side is near unbearable. The mechanics of the game compel you to get infuriated at any poor team mates on your team, because the more and more such a teammate gets taken out, the stronger your enemy becomes. But winning and actually taking out enemy opponents = bliss.)

Half Life (only played through it for the 1st time in late 2009 and I'm eager to play through it again.)

in random order:

01) Super Mario Kart 64 (N64)
02) Double Dragon II (NES)
03) The Legend of Zelda (NES)
04) Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
05) LoZ: Ocarina of Time (N64)
06) Captain Skyhawk (NES)
07) Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (PC)
08) Tomb Raider II (PC)
09) Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
10) LoZ: A Link to the Past (SNES)
11) Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door (NGC)
12) Flashback (PC)
13) Lemmings (NES)
14) Worms (PC)
15) Civilization II (PC)
16) Lufia - Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES)
17) New Super Mario Bros. Wii
18) LoZ: Four Swords Adventures (NGC)
19) Ugh! (PC)
20) FIFA 98 - Road to Worldcup (PC)

FIFA 98 and Tomb Raider II are on there partly because I haven't really played more recent installments. If this list was sorted according to the amount of time spent playing the games, then Double Dragon II would be on top.

Since I only recently acquired a Wii, there aren't many wii games on the list. I'm actually still getting through on NSMBWii.

Most eagerly awaited game: Legend of Zelda - Skyward Sword

Lemmings was so much fun. I played that for hours on my Amiga. Another Amiga game that I loved was Wings. It was a WWI dogfighting game that had a decent narrative to it that unfolded between missions.

Like others that post, these are not in any order.

1. X-COM (the original)
2. Rock N Roll Racing
3. All of the Smash Bros games
4. Team Fortress 2
5. League of Legends
6. The Ratchet & Clank series (really like their humor)
7. Total Annihilation and then the Supreme Commander series

If it was by time spent in a game, I think Ragnarok Online would win. I really liked this game, but I refuse to play MMO's since this one. It just consumed my life. After quitting, I made the Dean's List every semester in college, and just found life more enjoyable.

Yeah MMOs are a tricky business, but there's a new one coming out that I'll play anyway called The Old Republic. It's a Star Wars game from the guys who make Mass Effect. It looks amazing.

it's WoW in space and I guess it's about time it cropped up or got its thread bumped or whatever, especially what with blur doing the cinematics and getting everyone salivating over the whole concept:

Jeff C.,

I actually follow all the updates for GW2 and SWTOR. They both look really cool. I could easily be persuaded to play either, or both. The problem I have is I would need friends IRL that play. This way we can casually play it together and level at our own pace. I would rather not play and know my friends and I are taking care of other responsibilities, than play with just online friends and fall back into a soul-eating hole of MMO hell. I don't have the discipline to play these types of games alone.

KirKis,

This is why I play League of Legends. I can play one or two games a day with my friends and there is nothing holding me in the game.

Posted by Jeff C. (Member # 12496) on :

I would say the Old Republic is a little different from WoW, even besides the space aspect. The entire game is fully voiced (which has never been done in an MMO) and uses a cover system for combat. It also has a heavy emphasis on story and choice, so you can change the outcome of the storyline just like you can in Mass Effect or Dragon Age. WoW is nothing like that. Really, the only similarity is the fact that they are both MMOs. Similar in some regard, but respectfully different.

To any fans of LoZ Ocarina of Time, or any fans of Robin Williams, or any fans of an attractive woman named Zelda Williams... you might appreciate this.

Gee, this is a tricky question. I can't create an ordered list because these games have different meanings and value to me, so it'd be an apples and oranges thing. But here's some of the games that have a history of enthralling me.

Final Fantasy Games- 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and Tactics have all been games that I've obsessed over. I still play them regularly. (I got Final Fantasy 4 + After Years and the Interlude on my PSP when the store went back online just a few days ago, and as of yesterday was playing 7.)

The Dragon Quest Series- 1,2,3,4,7,8,9 Monsters and Monsters:Joker. Oh yeah. I love these games.

Pokemon: Red/Blue, Gold/Silver. I've played many of the others in the series, but the first two generations are the nearest and dearest to my heart.

Valve Games (Including Mods) - Half Life, Portal 1 and 2, Counterstrike, HL2, CS:Source, Team Fortress, Natural Selection (Major love for this game. A perfect blend between RTS and FPS).

Id Games - Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, they're all very important to me.

Maxis - Simcity, the Sims, Simant, and Simcopter.

Megaman Games - Original series (1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9), X Series (X, X4), Net (1 and 2), Zero (1 and 2), and Legends.

Sid Meier- Civ games, and a ton of Alpha Centauri. Still play Alpha Centauri fairly regularly.

Mario and Zelda games.

Blizzard games - Warcraft(1,3), Starcraft(Mostly 2), WoW, and Lost Vikings were all games that I love.

And to round off the list a few more games that I love and would hate myself for not including.

Batman Arkham Asylum
Minecraft
Goldeneye
Starfox 64
SuperSmash Bros
and Fallout 3

You guys ever tried Caravanner, it's free, it's fun and...well isn't that enough?

ETA: Apparently only for Jeff (thanks buddy)...so, here's the skinny:
quote:
This is a complicated RPG game, where you need to take care of economical issues, follow the story and fight the bad guys. You are a caravaneer in a post-apocalyptic world. In fact, the area where the story takes place is a desert. The inhabitants of this desert try to develop some industry, but without being able to transport goods, this is quite useless. Due to that, caravaneer is the most wanted profession in this world, and the most profitable one. However, your job is not very pleasant. To transport goods you need to risk your life, because there's no law out there in the desert, and robbers are as thick as blackberries.

The game is very realistic, and apart from trading goods and buying weapons to fight robbers, you need to take care of your caravan: buy and organize transport, hire people, provide food, water and fuel etc. All this makes the game very complicated, so make sure you read the tutorial before you start.

I've never heard of that, Stone Wolf. I'll check it out when I'm not at work.

And Vadon, did you know they're making a Mega Man Legends 3? It's coming out on the 3DS. About time, right?!

1. Mass Effect
2. Super Mario Bros 3
3. Call of Duty 2
4. Dead Space 1/2
5. Fallout 3/Oblivion (really hard to decide this one)
6. Halo 1 and 3
7. Heavy Rain
8. Monkey Island
9. Dragon Age: Origins
10. Mario Kart 64

I will add that the finest PC city-building/strategy game (Or, rather, the finest PC game in any genre) I ever did play was Zeus: Master of Olympus and its expansion pack, Poseidon.

Wonderful method of story-telling, and just the right level of complexity in the managing of your cities. Wonderful.

Also, loved Donkey Kong Country 2, for SNES, as well as Mega Man X.

I also quite enjoyed some of the Nancy Drew adventure games for the computer.

When it comes right down to the MMO gameplay mechanics and general systems, it's not really reinventing the wheel anywhere. It's taking what generally works about DIKU and it is replicating it wholesale. When you're playing it, the general feel and the mechanics are pretty WoW-y and it stands out as such.

And, let's be honest — this is a compliment. They absolutely should be doing it this way.

What I find interesting is how Forever is now officially means 15 years.

Old Republic's interest for me is having a much more story focused/scripted story (in theory). But Skeptical that theres enough emergent gameplay to keep me interested past completing the main quests.

Well realistically, WoW just stole that style of gameplay from Everquest, so if you're talking about the core concepts of the gameplay, I'd say they are all EQ clones.

Regardless, I prefer a story-based game over a grinding one, which is the major difference from what I've seen. I agree with you that they are similar, just like most other MMOs, but there are noticable differences. Hopefully those differences are large enough that I won't feel like I'm playing WoW in space, but we'll see. It's still a long way from launch, unfortunately. [Frown]

It doesn't even start with Everquest - WoW is more differentiated from the more direct DIKU clones (thank god) but they're all just graphical muds at heart.

Zelda looks awesome. The motion control is being implemented extrememly well. I love they thry're being extremely explicit this time about it being a prequel to Ocarina, and that its about forging the master sword. And it takes place in the sky. Baller.

Update:

I still play League of Legends casually and have 8-10 IRL friends on it now. It's a great way to hang out with some of my friends across the country now that we are adults and spread out.

I picked up Divinity: Original Sin 2 with a friend and we've co-op'ed that game on a few playthroughs. Loads of fun. Turn-based combat RPG that won game of the year in 2017.

Update:

My favorite games will still be mostly found in the NES, SNES and N64 era, because I shared those experiences with my brother.

I enjoyed Skyward Sword, did not have any major issues with the motion control.

Breath of the Wild is great. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the map and making discoveries based solely on your own choices and curiosity. I probable spent around 700 hours with he game.

The first game I played on my Switch was Super Mario Odyssey. Then I moved on to Octopath Traveler (I still have to beat the final boss). Currently dividing my time between SSBU and Minecraft and some random smaller games in between.

Smash Bros Ultimate, and Dead Cells. Thinking about starting Mario Odyssey, and Hollow Knight.

Hollow Knight is on my 'To Play' list. I bought it months ago, but haven't found the time yet to start the adventure.

Yoku's Island Express is also on the list.

Posted by DustinDopps (Member # 12640) on :

Yoku's Island Express is a bit short, but fantastic.

Hollow Knight is a bit long - and a bit difficult - but it was fantastic too.

Those are both great choices. I am just finishing playing through Okami on the Switch. I played through it back on Gamecube, but I had forgotten a lot of it. It takes approximately 35 hours and is Zelda-like.

I also just finished Spider-Man on PS4 and it was really, really good.
