While listening to a podcast hosted by a married couple recently, they were talking about an ad for the movie only available online becuase it had a female character with her chest exposed. After the husband made the obvious jokes about "why dont more movies advertise this way!" his wife who is strong fan of the book series explained how this makes no sense for the character or the story and how they are overtly pandering for a crowd that might not enjoy the book at all.
And that trailer was attrocious, I have no idea what the story is or even who is the main character. The music feels like an after thought and is poorly done, studios need to stop ruining good music like this. And that end bit, with the fwoosh WORDS fwoosh WORDS... it all means one thing to me, I have no interest in seeing this film whatsoever.

It's just a teaser, Achilles. It's pretty standard practice for a vague, music filled teaser trailer to be released a month or two ahead of the real trailer.
I'm sure dozens of movies you've liked have released teasers that were just as vague about plot and characters as this one.
Good books, good Swedish movies, awesome teaser.

Looks good. It definitely has some good people involved in it: David Fincher, Daniel Craig, Trent Reznor, etc. The only problem is that I really liked the original so if they screw it up, I wont be happy.

I just don't understand why its being remade. The Swedish version is good enough, why mess with it? Are sub-titles so hard to read?

The Swedish version was not viewed by an especially wide audience in the US. This version will be viewed by a substantially larger audience (I would be extremely surprised if it isn't at least an order of magnitude larger). The people funding the movie consider that a good thing because of the money that will be made. There are probably people involved who are just happy at more people being exposed to a good story. It seems a reasonable motivation for remaking it to me.
Also, while the first of the Swedish movies is pretty good, the latter two are not nearly so good. I enjoyed them a lot, but I am pretty confident the combination of talent brought together for these films will do an even better job. They'll quite possibly do an even better job with the first movie -- the similar shots between the trailer and the Swedish version certainly seem to portray a more expert hand at cinematography.

Yeah, the poster is silly, though I can see why they're marketing it that way. I see no such problems with the movie, though -- the trailers' scenes are picture perfect representations of those in the books. Given that, I highly recommend seeing it (pending further information). The books are quite good.

With the exception of anime, I rarely watch foreign films. I am also not a fan of subtitles. Not because I can't read, but because I want to SEE what is happening while hearing the dialog. Much of the cinematography gets lost while I am reading the subtitles. If I want to read the story instead of seeing and hearing it, I can read the book (and often do).
The only reason I watched this one, I was in the mood for something different so I watched a bunch of foreign films: Dragon Tattoo, Let the Right One In, a couple Korean movies, etc. I really liked it but through the whole thing, I couldn't help but think that it could be a lot better with just a slightly faster pace. If Fincher can do that, this will be a must see for me.

The dubs on the Sweedish version weren't bad either. I actually thought they did a good job of it. (Yes, I am dork enough that I'd watch several scenes with subtitles, then replay them with the dubs just to pick out the differences.)
I actually really liked the Sweedish versions for the most part. I thought they cast it very well, and stayed to the story line better than most movies. There was the unnecessarily long lesbian love scene, but...
From what I see in this trailer, it is going to be hard for me to get used to the new casting, partially because Lizbeth looks too feminine. There are also scenes in it that I thought were actually in the other books, so I'm worried they're playing with the story line too much...

Fugu, are you saying the Fincher trailer contains scenes from all three Fincher versions? 'Cause... there's an obvious problem with that.
