So far my top score, after playing one game, is 3750.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

3960

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

3400, then 3880

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

My best score so far (3 games) is 3000. Need to work on my vocabulary

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

Hm confusing, sassy is not troublesome?

Posted by T:man (Member # 11614) on :

Ok now I feel better 3780.

Posted by Stone_Wolf_ (Member # 8299) on :

First I got 3160, getting Febrile wrong.
Second I got 3080, getting Espouse wrong.
Third I got 3540, with zero wrong.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

3420 Points. So is your possible score different each game?

Posted by theCrowsWife (Member # 8302) on :

3880 is the best I've managed. I have to say, though, that I thought it was kind of funny that "friable" is in the hardest level. As a gardener, I use it frequently.

Um, I don't think all of the answers are correct. It just told me that the correct definition for "transient" is "sympathize"...

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

3720. Wish it were set up so that each game had the same maximum number of points.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I can't respect any vocabulary quiz that I find this easy.

Posted by JonHecht (Member # 9712) on :

3600, 3840, 3940, and I don't think I'll get any better on a laptop.

theCrowsWife: I've never heard the word friable before.

Noemon: I think they're all out of 4000.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

3840. I agree with Porter.

Also, it should say "click the closest synonym," not "the best definition." Those are not definitions.

Nah, they can't be; I've been scoring 100% on them and getting fewer points than that each time.

I got 3620, but since I got them all right I guess the difference between my score and others' was speed.

Really I expected to do a lot worse compared to the hatrackian intelligentsia.

Would be fun if someone could find a harder quiz.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

It's timed, Jake. You get point bonuses based on speed for each question.

But they're timed as well so you can get all the questions right without getting all of the possible points.

My high score is 3960 and there wasn't an unfamiliar word in any of the several quizzes that I took

Ohhh, that makes sense. Okay. Complaint withdrawn. I'll have to try hurrying.

Man, it looks like I need to get the word of the day going again...I'll just use the words I don't know on the quiz.

Posted by JonHecht (Member # 9712) on :

What happened to that rice donation one? That one had some hard words.

Posted by Mr. Y (Member # 11590) on :

First try: 3180 (1 wrong)
Second try: 2820 (2 wrong)
Third try: 3800

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

300 1st time, with 2 wrong.
3700 second time, none wrong but the first question so high on my screen I had to scroll up THEN read it. LOL

It means loose and crumbly. It's frequently used in gardening as a description of how you want your soil to be.

I've gotten two games with a score of 3980. It's frustrating to be a second too slow for a perfect score.

Before you get too unkind in critiquing the game I'm linking below, be aware that it was built by my fiancee and me. [Big Grin]

My best score for this one is 1065ish. I'd be interested to know how high Hatrackians can get!

Okay, now I feel like an idiot; that information is right there on introductory window thingie. I'm not sure what my problem was yesterday.

In any case, elements of the quiz are blocked from work, which means that while I can get to the first word, I'm unable to select an answer. It's probably for the best.

I wish they had a time limit of 5 seconds/word and did not score you on how fast you answered.

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

The quiz gave me the word "Transient" and the correct answer was "Sympathize". WTF???

Posted by Samprimary (Member # 8561) on :

3990

damn, so close

the top-level goal of the game is to answer within a second. If you already know what every word is in the test's database (I wouldn't be surprised if many people here do), getting a higher score is a question of twitch gameplay and a test of your reaction time.

Some of the ones I got wrong:

Ennui
Eleemosynary
Lagniappe
Jejune
Ameliorate
Caesura
Bellicose

Posted by Samprimary (Member # 8561) on :

didn't i turn jejune into a word of the week here a long time ago? like, before 'ennui' ?

My best after a few tries was 3400. My reflexes are pretty lousy, though.

1016. But again, I have lousy reflexes.

Jeorge, there are a lot of these that could be worded more clearly. The overall sentence structure in some cases is just awkward. Also, little things like looking for a semicolon as opposed to a period can be misleading, in my opinion.

The top score for the MW one is actually 4200, not 4000, by the way. (There's a high-scores board you can look at.)

Posted by JonHecht (Member # 9712) on :

The Portland Proof one is full of errors, ranging from not using a comma when a subordinate clause is present to using "me" instead of "I". Something along the lines of "he does better than me" was in one of the sentences and "me" was not the mistake.

I'm going to brag that spending my formative years playing Counterstrike made me better at vocabulary.

Posted by scifibum (Member # 7625) on :

Wow - I felt like I went fast, got all 10 of them right, and only scored 2500.

I feel cruddy.

Oops. Looked again. I got 3660. [Big Grin] That's better. Apparently 2500 is the average.

Posted by Stone_Wolf_ (Member # 8299) on :

3720 is the best I've gotten so far.

Posted by scholarette (Member # 11540) on :

3640 for me. It took a few tries, but I have a migraine and took a vicodin like half an hour ago so I am kinda impressed with myself right now.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

I got 3240 but with one mistake due to too fast clicking; I do know that officious means meddlesome.

Glad I saw your post before I wrote the same thing. Played twice, my scores were 3720 and 3800. I didn't know one of the words (irrefragable) but guessed correctly.

Yeah, and adding to the "transient=sympathize" mess, I just took the test again and the synonym they gave for basilisk is "spellbinding." Uh huh.

Well I have seen "Basilisk" used in phrases like "Her Basilisk gaze", where it is a synonym of spellbinding. I have not been able to find any usage of transient where it is remotely similar to any usage of sympathize I've found.
