So I'm, in a minor way, into shaped cakes. Purely for fun and purely to eat afterwards (so no fondant, yech!), but still semi-intricate. My most recent creation is detailed here. So two purposes, the first being anyone else want to share their cake creativity? The second is: what to do for the 4th? Besides being kind of boring to begin with I did a cake in the shape of the States last year. I'm not much with decorating purely with frosting and enjoy actually shaping the cake a lot more. Sadly I can't really come up with anything good for my nations independence, I need ideas!

An early American flag with mini-cupcakes for the stars.
A giant firecracker or skyrocket.
PAC MAN.

A Liberty Bell or the Statue of Liberty?

A fife and drum?

Independence Hall or the Washington Monument?

Mount Rushmore?

Be sure to post pictures of your finished project!

The liberty bell would be appropriate.

Of do a scene with majestic purple mountains and amber waves of grain.

This also has the benefit of being pretty simple and fun to eat. Giant mounds of cake covered in purple? Check! Flat parts with amber frosting in varying thicknesses? Check! Easy-peasy. [Smile]

Personally I'm into baking really good cupcakes. I enjoy the portability and easy to eat aspect of cupcakes, plus they are cute.

For my daughter's graduation party I made three - one champagne, one white chocolate, and one cookies and cream. The white chocolate has melted white chocolate in both batter and frosting, the champagne used a sparkling white wine that was a bit sweeter and not too dry. The cookies and cream was a dark chocolate cake with a whipped filling made with crushed oreos and pudding and the frosting was a marshmallow creme.

I don't have pics or I would share. [Smile]

I think I'll do a liberty bell, seems like the best option. That's a lot of faith in my cake-crafting abilities to suggest the statue of liberty! I'm not sure it's even structurally possibly with just cake and (butter) frosting. The mountains and grain seem good but I just did mountains and other than just yellow frosting I'm not sure how I'd do grain...

Well, I made it. It didn't turn out at all well though I did learn a few things along the way. Close enough I suppose, though I'd massively rather show-off my former cake rather than this one.

Add some cake balls to the bottom picture and you'd have a dalek wearing a toupee.

I didn't do this for the 4th, but I found this idea for a cake online and loved it so much I had to try it. It's my first attempt and there are thing I would tweak if I did it again, but I still like it.

Flag Cake
