So, ifin you feel like sharing your ugly mug, here's a good spot for it.

My facebook. (which I never use, but threw up some pics just for this)

I do too, it's probably the coolest photo that's ever been taken of me. (I'm normally ridiculously un-photogenic)

Your non-evilgrandmother form is lovely.

this is a good old fashioned webcam photo, sans glasses, in case anyone wonders what I look like without glowing eyes or funny hats or a goofy smile.

Mirrored? Not sure what you mean.

Eta: Oh, the writing is backwards. Not sure why that happened. It's either the camera on the iMac or my subconscious fear of looking to the right.

I guess I'll add my ugly mug to the collection.

In explanation, one is me at my desk, another is my halloween costume when I went as a gas station clerk that was shot in the head and the last is a picture of my dna and it was a recent gift to my mother. You have been warned.

Note: in case you are considering using my dna picture for the use of cloning, my genetic code has a pre-disposition for deformity and bad attitude. [Smile]

I have to say, being blond is pretty awesome. It does have a tendency to get you cast in villainous roles, though.

Though my hair has always been more silver than true blond... I guess it just means I'll age well.

Watch what you wish for, its super-thin and pulls out all too easily. I have to use the blonde shampoo that costs more because anything else leaves my hair greasy and slightly the color of the shampoo. Dont get me started on pools.

On the topic of blonde and villianous, the only time I ever acted was in Three Musketeers and I played Rochefort (the bad guy with only one eye) and the director told me to not dye my hair. So I was the platinum-blonde in all black, they even had to change a line in which a poetic old man woo's a woman by telling her that she has the blondest hair he has ever seen.

I'd love to share some family pics, but some members of my family are very camera shy and don't appreciate me putting them up online. It's kind of funny. My sons are eleven and fourteen.

Wolf, who's to say we actually do manage with all four? Separations are 2 years 5 months, 2 years 3 months, and 3 years 11 months.

You're right, though. They are cute.

My mother only had three and we were so uncontrollable that we could be found outside sharpening sticks on the curb. Four sound frightening, four children from my family that is.

I'm sure your children are completely non-sociopathic and are safe around flammable material.

The wife and I are done with kids ATM...we are leaving the possibility open for another set of two down the line...since mine are only 15 months apart they are quite the handful and I'm pretty sure I couldn't handle another bundle of joy right now. We wanted them really close together for one so they would be virtually the same age most of their lives, and have each other as close friends, but also so we could go through the diaper stage all at once.

Once the 6 month old girl sleeps through the night I'll probably be better composed...amazing how sleeping uninterrupted makes such a difference in my life.

Hobbes: I hope there was no offense...tool was your word, not mine [Smile]

Posted by advice for robots (Member # 2544) on :

We have four. I think three was the hardest, because we were suddenly outnumbered. Plus, our third is a fireball. Our fourth is a little angel. But I also attribute the drop-off of difficulty to greater experience as parents. With our first, we had no idea what we were doing. With our fourth, we know to cover with the new diaper while taking the old diaper off, among many other bits of hard-earned wisdom.

The more kids, the more grandkids, and the more people we have to take care of us when we get older. It's a long-term investment. [Smile]

Yes! Mine too -- and yet he eats like food is going out of style.

Which is why CT's hollow-leg theory makes so much sense.

Posted by Olivet (Member # 1104) on :

Mine's certainly not keeping any of what he eats in his middle. At least not for long. It must be the hollow legs.

Mooses (Meece?): What a beautiful family!

I'm the 6th of 8 children, my parents say the first 3 were the hardest... by the time I came along, I was raised by my older brother and sisters just as much as I was by my parents. My sisters and I would cook dinner every night and clean, I'd do all the yardwork and handiwork and gardening that needed done, we'd throw birthday parties for eachother, and once we were able to start working summer jobs we'd help our parents out a bit with the bills. Really, my parents probably had an easier time of it with 8 of us identured servants running around than they would've had with 2 or 3. [Wink]

I don't have any recent pics, but those of you who've met Christian, He's taller than me, now, though he still weighs about 1/2 as much (it's the hollow leg, indeed). You may also remember Will, whose 1st birthday it was when last we saw each other... he's seven.

I agree, the Meese are a great-looking bunch.

It's also my belief that past 3 kids, it's all about the same. My oldest two are 10 and 8, and they're starting to be able to really help out with the baby, not just do token tasks. My wife's on crutches recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery and the kids have actually been helpful, which is so refreshing.

I don't think we're going to have 8 kids, but I'm starting to get a glimpse of how it's possible (it's more the acceptance of being back at square one with each new kid, than it is the sheer number of kids you have to deal with). Somewhat ironically, my wife comes from a family of 8 kids and I come from a family of 6. We're used to big families, I guess, but raising one is different than being in one. Early in our marriage, someone made the observation that your kids raise you. That has yet to be wrong, 4 kids later. We both had some notion of it, I guess, but there's nothing like a 2-year-old to learn you things like iron patience. I expect we have much, much more learning to do as our kids enter their teens. I personally feel like we're right at the top of the first hill of a roller coaster. Here we go.

It's actually significantly bushier right now. Not for any real stylistic reasons... mostly because of laziness.

So, next week I'm returning to the US after being overseas for a little more than a year. I've spent the past year living a pretty hectic life, and right now the memories are pretty blurred... sleeping outside on strange islands, so hot that you sweat lying still at 3 in the morning. Laying in a cramped rack on a ship, seasick, reading Heinlein. Long sleepy helicopter flights, short terrifying boat landings, the taste of sweat, vomit and seawater, the smell of burning refuse and water buffalo shit and cooked goat. And of course, stormy evenings holed up in Japan, lurking on Hatrack. [Smile]

I've been trying to sort through my memories, meditating and reflecting on all that I've seen and accomplished this year, to prepare my for the transition and the stress that comes with readjusting to western civilization. To help with the blur, I've been looking through my friends online photo albums, picking out individual memories to focus on.

I think out of all the pictures of myself I've looked at so far, this one stands out as my favorite. Until this year, I never really understood why so many of my friends who are parents have such a deep love of children. But this year, in all the craziness and loneliness, the dearest friends I've made have been the kids I've met - many of whom I share no common language with. It doesn't matter to them, they give you 100% of their attention - with no motive more selfish than genuine curiosity. It's an infectious innocence, and I've begun to hope that one day I'll have children who will help remind me what it is to kind and loving and fearless on a daily basis.

I apologize for perhaps overusing this thread (I think I've posted more pictures than any other user), and for making a rather personal post. I'd like to see what the rest of you look like some day. [Smile]

Glad to see that you're coming home Dogbreath, and the memories held by that very sweet picture must be nice too! If you pass through the Phoenix Airport I would be happy to buy you your first beer and burger back stateside, well maybe some enchiladas instead, I happen to know the best place in all of Arizona.

I actually find it complicating to know what some the of the posters look like, Olivet for instance, how could I ever disagree with her now!

Edit to add.
Here is an updated picture, showing just how pale and blonde I really am, hard to believe I've spent my entire life in the desert.

Since I was 13, I've been part of an online community formed almost exclusively of people my age. (And one guy in his 30s, and one 50 year old) It was based on a gaming website, but we all talked on IRC, IMs, and video cams (via MSN, then Skype when it came around) - after I became an adult and started traveling in college, I went on to meet 6 of them. They were actually some of my closest friends in high school - and unlike most of my high school friends, I still keep in contact with all of them.

Hatrack seems to be a lot more formal than that, and I've never had the time to establish myself as anything more than an occasional poster. (despite knowing 2 Hatrackers irl) but I still think knowing what other posters look like adds a lot of dimension to conversation, even if I can't say I really "know" any of the posters here.

I think you and I are about evenly matched in paleness - I'm about as far white as you can get without being an albino.

Sadly no stops in Phoenix, I appreciate your offer though!

I wrote a nice post responding to you, Dogbreath, about how we use to all meet up on Hatrack, and even had weddings between members and a convention.

It's lost now, so you'll have to take my word on how nice a post it was....lol...

Awesome picture. [Smile]

Hatrackers still do get together regularly. But for a variety of reasons, those arrangements (and many of the involved posters) don't happen here anymore -- they happen on the so-called spinoff forums.

Posted by Dogbreath (Member # 11879) on :

I've heard vague mutterings of these spinoff forums before, though I've yet to see / be invited to join any of them. Perhaps when I get back to Hawaii and have more consistent internet access I'll look them up. [Smile]

That is a great picture, Dogbreath. Makes me smile just thinking about it. I'll echo AH's invite but for Chicago.

I can't imagine you would be met with anything other than delight on any of the spinoff forums that I know about.

Oops--sorry. Yours must have gotten lost in the mail!

In all seriousness, Dogbreath, invitations aren't needed. The two most active such communities are sakeriver and Galactic Cactus. Check them out, and if either seems like a place you'd like to spend more time, create an account and start posting.

I actually will be in Chicago the morning of January 3rd. [Smile] Only for an hour and a half, though, so I won't even be able to leave the airport. You can blame the DoD for not scheduling flights with longer layovers.

This morning I recieved an official invitation from rivka via e-mail, so I'd feel like a hypocrite for not checking out the spinoff forums now. [Smile]

Zach, I can't access those pictures. Do I have to be your facebook friend to see them?

Last Friday a friend had a harry potter themed party, sorted us into houses etc. I thought it would be cool to put the house colors in my hair.

I think it turned out real well.

ETA Incredibly detailed portrait.

I need to get my daughter to look at these - she wants to dye her hair blue. I'm thinking we'll have to have a salon do it, as I am not handy with hair dyes and so on. (and a co-worker told a tale of sorrow when his daughter dyed her hair one color and it turned green - now he thinks he should have taken her to a salon)

Posted by Shanna (Member # 7900) on :

Just to warn her, to get a color that bright and pigmented I basically had to bleach my hair five times over two months and then treat it with special conditioner to bring it all the way down to white. My hair is REALLY fried right now.

A salon using professional products will probably not need to use as many bleaching but that can also depend on the original color of the hair (my natural shade is a mousy brown.)

My blue hair

My blue hair is just dye laid over my natural color and a few places where I bleached it out first. Most people thought my hair was naturally black.

Also, dyes can wash out funny. My blue (Splat brand) always washed out fine. But for example, my pink hair was actually done with diluted purple dye. I've seen some pretty teals turn green. It really just depends what the undertones are but I have very little problem with primary colors like blues and reds.

And of course, there's the upkeep of unnatural colors. It will wash out alittle with every showering so I would have to redye every week and a half to keep the purple THAT bright. And there's always the commitment to letting bleached hair grow out. I don't even want to think about what a pain its going to be when I decide to let my natural color grow back in.
