I have a hard time understanding why anyone would do this. Why bother to join property with the expectation of splitting it?

It's an interesting experiment that probably realistically accounts for what marriage becomes in any society which doesn't coerce people (especially women) to stay in unhappy marriages through intense social or legal stigma, and has dispensed with the practice of largely or totally arranging marriages, either directly or through courtship practices and other pressures.
That said, it's probably better off to have someone else do the experimentation with this.
