Benefits: Keeps a storage of childs's cordblood, to be available for any future stemcell and other related medical treatments.
Thoughts: Expensive for my current financial situation with the baby on the way, but unsure if it is a necessary expense with the future of medical technology sure to be crazy in the future.

I initially read that as "Cordblood Baking", and thought "that seems kind of gross, but I guess people eat human placenta and claim that it's not cannibalism. How would this be different, really?"

I donated to shared bank. I figure that helping the research advance will be better for my kids than storing stuff and hoping for technology to improve. Also, we have no family history of anything that cord blood is currently helpful for. I honestly think that unless you have the risk factor just donate.

Another point of view: health insurance.
Lets use 30 years for this example: 1600 + 125*30 = approx. $5500
If my child some crazy sickness, what are the chances it costs me more than 5500?

I would have donated, but the hospital didn't have a provision for it. I was sad.

Very high, but what are the chances that it has some crazy sickness that cord blood would help with? Pretty low. 5500 is a very good price for generic health insurance for 30 years; maybe not so good for very specific health insurance that may-or-may-not help with diseases that are pretty unlikely. I suggest that you should view this completely unemotionally as an actuarial calculation; in fact, asking an actuary may be your best bet.

Donated our two children's. If money weren't tight, I might have given it a long think. *shrug*
I'd say if your funds are scarce then give it to research.
