It has begun! Portal 2 is only $5 today. They've also added "Flash Deals" that change throughout the day and don't last 24 hours which I imagine will keep people checking several times a day, which will in turn get people who are debating a purchase that much more time to be faced with that deal.

I've already spent $7.50 on Deux Ex, btw that deal is only available another hour as of this posting. Shogun 2 is $5 which is a STEAL for how fun that game is.

I expect I'll end up with about 4-5 games costing $30ish total. I'll put them with my games from Christmas' sale. I'll get to them eventually but I can't resist a good deal.

The sale goes to July 22nd so I'll be updating what deals you really should look at. Let the spending begin!

Hmmm, don't see the main Steam account tweeting the Flash Deals yet.

Where do you go? Id grab Shogun 2.

www.steampowered.com

Go, and spend!

Edit: Correction. Shogun 2 is $7.49 still an awesome deal. Also the expansions are bundles at a tidy $19.99. Still for value get the core game.

Trine 2 - Flash sale for a couple hours
First one was fun at least

I was waiting for Shogun to drop to 20 bucks or so to buy it, as that's my sweet spot for the Total War games for me to get my money's worth. Nice to get that and both expansions for 20. Thanks!

Oh and anyone that hasn't played Portal 2 yet please buy that game at $5. You are basically ripping them off at that price. I just finished the single player campaign yesterday, and its going on my all time favorite game list.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

I played it for xBox and also played through the co-op campaign with a friend. It's seriously one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've ever had.

I have a hard time deciding whether or not I liked the first Portal or the second one better. I guess I really have to go with Portal 2, which is saying something since my kneejerk reaction is always to not like the sequel as much. But you just get so much more story in Portal 2, without sacrificing anything in terms of gameplay.

[Maybe a kinda spoiler]

I really loved Wheatley in the second game.

I actually preferred the story elements in Portal over the sequel. I loved GLaDOS in the first, but in the second I was kind of meh on her.

But the puzzle elements were really great in Portal 2. I loved all the new stuff, and I was amazed at all the new environments.

Thank you uncouthly spammer who will soon be banned by JanitorBlade, I look forward to playing Portal 2.

No one understands my sense of humor. (Yes I know Blackblade=JanitorBlade)

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

Xavier: Yeah, I thought the added puzzle elements really made the game. Some of the goo puzzles made the game, particularly in the co-op campaign, a welcome challenge.

JimmyCooper: Sorry. [Smile] I didn't recognize your username and saw you had few posts, but I also didn't notice your registration date. So, I thought you were new and didn't realize. My bad. No hard feelings? [Big Grin]

No problem. Plus Portal 2 advertisements are never spam.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

One of the primary reasons I was so bummed when my xBox died was because I was gearing up to replay Portal 2, and I couldn't anymore.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Snagged Shogun 2 but can't get it to work. Thinking about Portal...but how annoying is it to play on a PC?

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

I've only played Portal and Portal 2 on the PC. I am biasd but I liked it just fine.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

If you have a pretty good computer, I think they'd probably be fine on a PC.

Posted by scifibum (Member # 7625) on :

If you find Portal annoying on a PC, keep at it. By the time you're halfway through the game, you might have converted to PC gaming. (Any first person game works better on the PC.)

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

Both games take a little bit of a learning curve at first too, so keep that in mind.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Today's deals are kinda "meh". Retain thy wallets lads, for tomorrow's riches await!

But if you must buy something, Half Life Complete for $9.99 is a massive chunk of PC gaming history. While Half Life 1 and 2 were both quantum leaps, today they show their age. The story telling is phenomenal by any standard, and if for some reason you have never played either of them, there's a gap in you game you need to see to.

So I bought Shogun 2 and downloaded it, but now I can't get it to work.

Every time I start it I get a black screen that freezes, forcing me to do a hard reset. Last time I got to the sort of pre-title screen and it froze there. I can't figure out what's wrong.

One hour left on yesterday's specials.

Hmmm, I vaguely recall having issues with initial startup. I believe I reinstalled, then had different issues, so I updated my video drivers, and wallah, working.

Get Crusader King's II if you still can, basically Game of Thrones the game, but better than the actual game of thrones the game.

Better sales today.

Skyrim is 50% off, in case anyone doesn't have it already.

Also strongly considering the Witcher 2. Anyone else played it? I seem to remember hearing good things, but I'm not sure.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Left For Dead 2 is $5.00 for the next 4 hours or so. There aren't quite as many players playing it as their used to, but it's still a way fun game.

Borderlands ($5.00) is great too. Especially if you have somebody to play through it with.

Posted by ricree101 (Member # 7749) on :

And a Civ flash sale.

A Civ IV + Civ V bundle for $25, and the individual games are 75% off across the board.

At 7.5, I'm definitely considering Civ V. Had the fourth one for years, so the bundle isn't as attractive.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

I like Civ 5.

Mount and blade collection is $8 today. I strongly recommend it.

Just bought and am now playing UFO Afterlight for $5...if you loved Xcom, just get it, you can thank me later.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Bastion is $3.74. If you enjoy action RPGs, pretty aesthetics, and somebody narrating your every move, then why did you wait until now?

Also, if you somehow missed the adventure game genre growing up, and want to relive a classic from that now dead genre, Monkey Island: Special Edition is $3.74 There's even a series of dialogue penned by Mr. Card in the game.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Also, can I just say Deux Ex Human Revolution is everything I wanted the first Deux Ex to be. I could play this sort of game for weeks.

Steam sales are pretty insidious. Sure, you can get a lot of cheap games, but then there's the temptation to go ahead and get a lot of cheap games you won't be able to finish by the time the next major steam sale roles around. And with this particular sale, they emphasized the "TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO GET THIS DEAL" factor by a bunch with their "flash deals" and all.

Beware of Steam...

I finished Portal 2 today, I never played Portal and didn't understand all the hype. I get it now, I'm even eyeing some of some of merchandise because the game was so impressive.

All first-person games seem to cause me motion sickness.

That included the first Portal, alas. I loved it, but I had to stop after every 30 minutes of playing it, which kinda soured a bit of the experience through no fault of the game itself.

So that's the only thing that now makes me hesitate a bit before buying Portal 2.

Posted by BlackBlade (Member # 8376) on :

Another yawn fest today. If you must buy something, Civ 5 is $7.49 for the next three hours.

So, I ended up downloading and installing Steam, so I could play Limbo and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Also, I'm new to Steam. Does anyone want to be my Steam friend?

If you can go buy Limbo. It is a really charming yet disturbing game.

The best part is that it is only $2.50.

Also if you want good old school style RPG's the Y's games have been going on sale for $7.50 each.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

I started playing Limbo last night. I can only play it in small bursts before I get too unnerved.

I'm having a lot of fun with my Shogun: Total War 2 purchase. One thing I like is that my opponents are actually quite active. I played Empire:TW quite a a bit, but in that game even on Hard difficulty I was pretty much the only faction on the map ever actually doing any conquering. In this game though, I have ambitious allies and enemies carving out their own empires. Helps keep the mid to end-game interesting to me.

However, I really loved the line infantry combat style of Empire, and was a bit sad that my battles went back to being big clusters of units hacking at eachother.

But since I got the bundle with the expansions, I started up a Fall of the Samurai campaign and now I am rocking my well placed lines of gunners again [Smile] . I am also loving the ship bombardments in battles and to soften up enemy armies. Integrating the spheres of influence together was brilliant.

I also like the smaller geographic size of territories. In my Prussian campain of Empire it took literally two turns to take over the entirety of France once I went to war with them. Big let-down. In Shogun 2, I'm happy if in 20 turns I take over my little island. Much more satisfying.

I hear that. You really do have to work for every inch in Shogun. If you go for the Shogunate you have to make absolutely sure you can stand up to whatever is left because the moment you take it, everybody stops fighting each other and comes gunning for you. Alliances are impossible to keep much less form. I was undisputedly the big dog when I finally became Shogun. Within 15 turns I was being assailed at every border, it was clear I was going to lose eventually. It was sad, but awesome. Contrast that with Empire, when I went for world domination I chose Russia, and it wasn't even hard.

Portal 2 flash sale going on now, in case you missed the earlier ones.

Thinkgeek.com just so happens to be advertising all of their Portal 2 merchandise.

I'm sure it is a simple coincidence.

Deux Ex Human Revolution is $7.49 again, and it's worth every cent.

Magicka is $2.75 and that's a steal for a great game. A warning, I had unfixable issues with that game and my Logitech mouse. I had to ultimately use another one just to play after hours of trying to fix it. I was not impressed a game that has been out that long (even at that time) still had those kind of issues.

The Steam autumn sale has commenced.

Currently looking at possibly picking up the original XCOM and the indie game Braid.

Good ol' XCOM!

Also, gog adventure game sale going on: pick 5 games for ten bucks. I've heard really great things about Resonance.
