what is the best kind of lubricant to make them not squeak?

wd40?
white silicone?

Depends why they're squeaking, but I'd start with WD40.

WD-40 is fine if it's what you've got, but it's not a particularly great lubricant. It was designed as a water displacer (hence the "WD") and its lubricating qualities, such as they are, are an incidental byproduct of that function.

For general household lubrication of things like squeaky hinges and locks, I use Tri-Flow.

If have none of the above, you can always use cooking oil. It works just fine.

While cooking oil will probably at least temporarily silence a squeak, it will spoil and potentially produce a foul odor. More to the point it will get really sticky and attract dust, potentially making your hinge worse off than when you started.

White lithium grease is an amazing substance.

Got all 11 of my doors and a drawer greased up in my house. Not one sound.

"White Lithium Grease" would also make a great title for a funk song.

I'm sure he has many fine qualities, but I don't know what makes you think he's any good as a lubricant. [Confused]

I'd go with powered graphite, as a powder it never attracts dust.

Clearly you don't know him like we do! His talent for smoothing things over is widely respected.
