I had an HP Touchpad with Android on it since getting it in the fire sale. It died last week. My wife just wants something bigger than a phone we can leave in the kitchen, just for Netflix while cooking.
I was thinking about the cheapest Kindle Fire, but was curious if anyone here had any suggestions. There are some cheap small tvs out there I could hook an Roku up to, but all those wires sounds messy. Our kitchen is kind of small.

The Kindle Fire is probably going to be the cheapest option out there. If you are looking for a bigger screen (10 inch vs. 7 inch) you could probably find a decent deal on a Samsung Galaxy Tab (the Galaxy 2 came out recently so you can find Galaxy 1 for a decent price) or the ASUS Transformer Prime. Depending on your luck you could probably find one of those in the $250 to $300 range.

I have two of them for my kids. They aren't liquid fast, but they do work, and I tend to watch netflix on one when I'm doing dishes.

Imagine the speed of water being poured from a glass into a sink, or, instant.
At times there is a bit of lag, like when downloading multiple things, and opening multiple apps, or switching between apps, but, if once you get going, everything works great. Beautiful screen, Netflix looks great.
Only two major drawbacks are overcomeable, 1 no protective cases available (I hand made them for my kids out of my winter wet suit's sleeves) and 2 they do not come with a user dictionary, so it thinks every single word is misspelled (I downloaded a free keyboard upgrade app which included an extensive dictionary.)

Would if I could. My HOA doesn't like rooftop antennas, and anything else only gets me PBS.
I may get her an IPad, we got directv recently and it looks like there is an app to watch live tv on Apple devices.

I have direcTV and got the app...and it is downright horrible. I guess if you got all the premium movie channels it might be okay, but the hugely vast majority of stuff on direcTV is unavailable on their app.

Even in the house? It looked to me like on the same Internet connection you got almost everything, just not when you leave the house.

I never saw a difference...it all sucked. Like 12 shows, literally. Maybe they have improved it since, I don't know.

Yeah, I have been clicking on woot all day to look at it. Tempting. Paying $139 for my touchpad spoiled me a little for the prices of 10 inch tablets. Her birthday is in April, so I still have a little time.

Yeah, I am not sure yet about Ouya. I am going to wait until it comes out first and see what the reviews and games are like.
I had a Sony Google tv for 3 days. It was incredibly buggy, the Amazon "app" advertised was just a link to the web site and not very user friendly. On day 3 it got stuck on a boot loop and it went back to Best Buy.
If I am going to buy a gadget for the tv I would get one of the machines like the Rasberry Pi. But my Sony blu-ray does everything I need for now. Netflix, Amazon, and downloaded mkv files.

Doesn't look like it. If you have cable with a DVR you can download apps to your phone that will let you control your DVR if it's hooked up to your internet network. It's easy to do if the DVR is connected to the internet and you have a smart phone connected to the same network, but other than that you're probably out of luck.
