Vsauce is a really amazing youtube channel I discovered recently. I'm sure a few of you have heard of them. They generally put out science videos, most of which are extremely informative and mind blowing. The typically like to answer questions that the commenters put up, such as: What color is a mirror? Why don't animals have wheels? Where do deleted files go? And so on.

I agree with them wholeheartedly. The Glock is nice and practical and reliable I guess, but I can't frickin stand them. OTOH, his "I hate 1911s" is just heresy. How could you hate a 1911?

Easier to love a Glock then a 1911. Single action? 8 rounds? Steel frame weighs a ton? A hundred and two year old gun costs as much as my first car? No light rail? No decock?
I actually do love 1911s, but seriously...how can you hate a Glock?

No argument that it's an icon. But that really isn't a good enough reason to get if you aren't collecting...ie your only gun.
What you want for your first (only) gun is a pump action 12 guage. Big five have sales almost monthly on Mossberg 500s (get the 7+1 20") for around $200. You can hunt deer, bird, and they are GREAT self defense guns. Plus ammo is abundent and cheap. Plus you can get mission speciffic ammo from non leathal beanbags/rubber slugs to non wall penetrating bird shot to knock down buck shot to 100 yard one shot one kill rifled slugs to armor shreding flichets and more.
Plus all you have to do is rack a round and the iconic "chich chuch" sound will get intruders out of your house instantly.
Plus long guns are not nearly as regulated as pistols.
Plus you can sport shoot skeet.
Plus they are iconic in their own right.
Plus 1911s run from $500 to $2, 000

SW: They're clunky, the grip rubs my thumb crotch raw, I hate the way the way the slide operates, I hate the way the gun looks, and worst of all, they're boring. I have to carry a Beretta 9 mm (which I also hate, but at least it has a hammer and a safety and doesn't look completely idiotic) but for my own guns, I don't want something for self defense or hunting. I want something that's *fun* to shoot. I *like* how heavy the 1911 is. I like that it's a .45, and has some stopping power. The magazine size is a legitimate complaint, but you can just carry more magazines. It's a beautiful weapon, it feels great when you shoot it, and is a hell of a lot more accurate than the M9.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I love the 1911.
But more accurate? No. Not even close. 45 acp is a sub sonic round. It drops like crazy. My Beretta can thread a needle at 100'. 45 drops like a stone so you CAN hit the broadside of a barn beyond 75', but you will be aiming like artillery...lobbing em in like a catapult.

As to the Glock...they fit me like a glove. Reliable, inexpensive, accurate, and I like how they look. Maybe I just have big hands.
Oh and have you tried the series 4? They have interchangeable backstraps.

Regardless, I've shot thousands of rounds with my beretta and it shoots like shit (from 25 yards. At 10 I group in an area roughly the size of a quarter, but at 25 I get about an 8 inch group. Though keep in mind our ranges are pretty heavily focused on rapid fire and quick reload drills) but the 1911 groups tighter and with greater accuracy at 25. I feel like the weight of the pistol helps with this. I'll admit I don't know much about ammo, could I be using different rounds? (I don't buy any of it, they just give it to us and make us shoot it)

Well comfort is a big part of accuracy.
And different ammos make a huge difference. Bullet weight, how many grains of powder, etc.
Perhaps memory is playing tricks on just how much drop .45 has...plus I was likely shooting reloads.
My Beretta is made in Italy, has a trigger pull like a breaking glass rod and has awesome Houge grips so...

*nods* The only Beretta I get to use unfortunately is a shitty military issue M9 that has seen about 20 years, lots of sand, and hundreds of thousands of rounds. I don't know how much that affects accuracy as opposed to rifles though. In boot camp I shot a M16A2 from the 1980s that had been shot many times and drug around, abused, and dirtied (and cleaned), carried through mud, water, sand, etc. by dozens of recruits before me and it shot a 6" group at 500 yards. I saw a coach put a smiley face on a B target with it from that distance.
