I really wanted him to go down in an election. This way there's a bigger chance that the idiots might re-elect him in a term or two.

It would have been nice to actually be rejected by the voters. Now there's no effect of having lost an election, and he can spin his recovery as a comeback.
People sympathize with health, they don't with failure.
