On page 77 (of the soft cover), Mazer is getting into a HERC and the narrative mentions that, in addition to anti-gravity lift, there are back up blades.
But that the blades would not deploy fast enough to save the crew. They take 0.3 seconds to deploy and the HERC typically flies at 20 meters.
The thing is in .3 seconds, the HERC would only fall .44 of a meter.
OSC (or really more likely Aaron Johnston) got it wrong.
