I was watching this Raffi video with my toddler the other day, and was surprised because the performer who shows up at 0:35 appears to me to be someone who is now famous (as an actor). I'm not going to say who I think it is, because that would be priming. But does anyone else think it's that guy? A couple of commenters in the YouTube thread mention the resemblance, but nowhere else on the internet is there a record of this actor being associated with this performance or with Raffi in any context. The Amazon listing for the video from which I believe this performance was taken does not list said famous man as performing. There is someone named Dennis Pendrith who bears some resemblance and who Google tells me has performed as a bassist with various bands.

Incidentally, the Raffi performance occurred in 1988 and the actor I'm thinking of was born in 1959 (making him 29 years old at the time the clip was filmed).

By 1988, that actor would have been one of the most famous people on the stage.

It does look a lot like him but I think the actor looked younger than that musician in 1988. It's such a short clip, I had to watch several times to figure out who you thought it was. The first watch I thought it was James May.

Tom, good point. I wasn't familiar with most of his pre-1988 work, and what I was familiar with (Black Adder, essentially) I had assumed was a bit later (like early 1990s). However, looking at his IMDb page, his only other recurring role seems to have been in a two-season TV show called 'Alfresco' that I've never heard of. But, I grant that having several non-recurring parts on nationally-broadcast television shows and a couple recurring parts on significant series almost certainly moves one out of the 'willing to play back-up to Raffi to make ends meet' category.

To me, the likeness is striking and immediate, but I've showed it to other people who have a reaction similar to Wingracer, where it takes several times before they see the resemblance at all.

I still have no idea who you are talking about.

Interesting. The person you think it is is not the person I thought he looked like.

Yeah, the resemblance is pretty striking. I immediately knew who you thought it looked like. I don't actually think it's him, though.

Slight resemblances that occurred to me:
Christopher Lloyd
Jeff Conaway

But they didn't fit later posts

Then I started going methodically through the casts of Black Adder and Alfresco

because I didn't see the right one

but now I can kind of see it.

Yeah I see it now but before the Black Adder mention, he looked like a cross between James May and Kevin Bacon to me [Big Grin]

Does anyone else see a Robert Downey Jr resemblance?

To Raffi, I meant. But on second watching, never mind.

The Blackadder person is who I thought it looked like. He is a musician.

Here is another Raffi video where the person's face is much more clearly shown at the beginning. It looks much less like him here.

I think that's actually the percussionist. You can see him in the background of the clip that I posted when the guy I mistook for Hugh Laurie (it seems harmless now) is in the foreground.

That was one of the reasons I thought it was plausible. He plays guitar and piano (and probably a variety of other instruments as well).

Ah, you're right. No wonder it looks much less like him.
