This is the best thing Clive Owen has been involved in in quite some time. The Knick is a hospital that is located in a poor area in 1900 New York. Most other hospitals move to a richer area but The Knick is kept in its location thanks to the backing of a wealthy business man, Phillip Robertson.

Owen is a world recognized doctor. But he's also addicted to cocaine. The story begins when Owen's financial backer introduces him to the person his financial backer wants to hire. And Owen turns them down.

There's a lot of conflict in the story that roots in the prejudices, social dynamics, and functions of the time period. Gender, Race, Abortions, Religion, Medical Practice and Economic class. It gets pretty nail biting and things really hit the fan at times. Some things are a little contrived but I find the payoff to be generally worth it. There's a large ammount of characters. Some of them dangerously flirt with seeming unlikable. Some characters begin likeable but begin to lose you later on. With one character, its the exact opposite. Some of them begin and stay likeable. There's a good balance here.

You can kind of compare Owen's character, John Thackery, to Don Draper, in terms of likability.

It's a cinemax show but its being featured on HBO until late october.
