I consider Dan Carlin's 20 hour series (in six parts) on World War 1 to be one of the best things I discovered on these here interwebz. Admittedly I especially appreciated the series because I didn't know too much about the details of World War 1. When he does one of these history podcasts he basically reads all the major books on the topic and distills it into a compelling narrative that considers all the participants' viewpoints and dilemmas and it's some gripping stuff. It helps that Dan Carlin has a voice very suitable for radio (he was on FM or AM radio in the 90s.)
That particular series on WWI is called "Blueprint for Armageddon."
Politically, Dan Carlin is center-left and he has a concurrent series called "Common Sense." I really liked his take on the results of the 2016 election (#311, "Trumped" )

What the what. I'm literally just about to finish Blueprint To Armageddon. I've loved it. Really filled in some gaps for me on the Great War. Highly recommended.
Excited to continue with King of Kings.

If you want an experience that's similarly broad and perspective-shifting, check out Wrath of the Khans. It still takes me aback, years after listening to the podcasts about whole swathes of history I knew so little about, how much the fingerprints of it are still prominent in the world today.
