I've had two of these this morning alone to my Hotmail account.

The sender shows "Mail Delivery system" (or similar) and claims to be a returned message you sent but that the system couldn't deliver.

And it includes a 101k attachment, with the file extension ".pif"

If you receive a similar message then under no circumstances should you open the attachment - it is almost certainly a virus.

It seems that virus distribution hit a new low - a warning for all of you.

That'll be Sobig.F, at a guess.

It really is being returned, though. Its probably been using your e-mail adress as a faked sender, which means somebody who has received e-mail from or sent e-mail to you in the past has it.

If you receive it directly, it just has the attachment (usually a .pif file) and the text 'Please see the attached file for details.'

I'm getting about 50 a day of them :-(

So far the sobig virus hasn't attacked me, though I was hit by lovesan. I had something else shortly before that, but it gave me nothing more than an error message (which, however, kept halting the programs I was trying to use to get rid of it).

Pull in McAfee virus protection and keep it up-to-date. It filters out all these worms -- I've been notified that it caught LovSan, Sobig, and ~2.exe alone in the past two weeks. It is worth every penny.

What it doesn't do is filter out all the messages telling you that someone has sent a virus from your address.

Why do they insist on doing that? :-(
