There are some authors whom I love dearly and want to thank.

My question is:

If another author comes up with an idea, say a magical item, can you copy that item?

What about magical race?
What about strange name?
What about...etc.

In other words, I want to make a minor tribute to Meredith Ann Pierce in my book. I just want to know what I'm legally allowed to do.

I don't know for sure what I want. But it'd be nice to have an allusion to a magical race in her book (like in just one line) or an allusion to some magical item she made, or to a character's exploits....

THe possiblites are many.

That sort of thing is definately legitamate. The ansible of _Ender's_Game_ is named after the ansible of Ursula Leguin's stories (which does the same thing). Similar examples abound.

So long as your not using a ton of details in a central way, you're fine. Just make sure you don't mislead the reader about the relationship between your world and the one you're refering to. Several readers built elaborate connections between the Makerverse and Middle Earth because of the dream in _Alvin_Journeyman_, none of which were OSC's intention.

In 3001, Arthur C Clarke wrote a section about a discovery made by Dr Susan Calvin, who was actually one of Isaac Asimov's characters.

I thought that was kind of cool...

quote:
What dream?

Alone in my imagining,
I had the darkest dream:
Of little men,
a spider's sting,
a land of smokes and stems --
and an evil golden ring.

(from memory, could be a little off).
