Thanks to Kathleen for allowing us to post these notices at Hatrack.

Flash Challenge #13 starts on Friday morning, June 24th.

How Liberty Hall’s Flash Challenges Work:

To participate, registration at Liberty Hall is required. Go to http://www.munsil.net and click on 'forums'.

If you are registering at Liberty Hall, first email me and let me know who you are and what your interest in Liberty Hall is. If you don't, you'll receive the following message:

quote:
I don't know you or I don't recognize you. Thus, you are unlikely to get in. What is your interest in Liberty Hall? What other forums do you frequent? Is there someone who can vouch for you?

You have 3 days to reply.

After 3 days (or 2 if I'm not in a good mood) your registration attempt will be erased and your registration username will be blocked forever.

And now on the the rest of the story!

Challenges start on Friday mornings and end on Monday mornings. Actual start and finish times might vary each weekend, depending on the Moderator. There will be an announcement made on Liberty Hall when the Flash Challenge is OPEN. You are free to start once we post the announcement.

How to take up the challenge:

1. Ensure you have at least 1.5 hours to do the challenge.
2. Read these rules and the formatting guidelines.
3. Send a request for your Flash Trigger to the given email address.
4. Check your email immediately for the trigger.
5. Begin writing your original story inspired by the trigger. Flash is usually 1000 words or less. You may write more than 1000 words, but others may hold this against you during voting. We will accept any length story. Please write a brand new story, do not edit or rework a story you’ve already written.
6. Email your titled story back to the “reply-to” email address before time runs out. The time limit is noted in your trigger email. It is usually 1.5 hours, but it may be less.

What happens next?

We post all stories anonymously on Monday morning. Your story will be in one of several groups.

On Monday and Tuesday, each group critiques and votes on the stories. We also open up the Guessing Frenzy. You are encouraged to comment in the group(s) that DO NOT contain your entry. However, you may comment in any group. Critiques and comments are open through Thursday.

A Final Vote Off between the winners of Best Flash in each group occurs on Wednesday. The Best of the Best is declared on Thursday. The Overall Winner of Best Flash chooses the next weekend’s trigger. Please begin to consider your trigger if you are a finalist in the Vote Off.

Thursday, we open the “Reveal Thyself” board, and you may optionally reveal which story you wrote.

Friday, all topics are locked and the next Flash Challenge Begins.

Troubleshooting

If you do not receive your flash trigger within 5-10 minutes of request:

1. Check your email; you may need to manually force a send/receive.
2. If you manually forced a send/receive and you still do not have your trigger, contact a moderator or administrator immediately.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy the challenge!

I just wanted to put in a plug for the flash challenges conducted by Mike and company. If there are any of you who are considering partipating, but are reluctant due to lack of confidence in your skills, I urge you to try it. I've learned quite a bit about writing and about myself as a writer by participating the last several weeks. The folks at Liberty Hall are wonderful. I think you will feel at home there, as I do.

Sounds really fun! I signed up. My email's on it's way.

Hey Hatrackers.
Can anybody send me via e-mail the email address for this weeks trigger.

The pesky firewall at work doesn't let me onto munsil.net. I guess somebody thought the site was being accessed too frequently.

Lol.

Done.

Get the trigger by sending an email to lhfc13@earthlink.net.

Oh, and if anybody doesn't like this week's trigger, it's Isaiah's fault! He won the last challenge (#11, because 12 was at Notebored this time) and thus won the right to pick this week's trigger.

For once, it is NOT HSO's FAULT!

Has it ever been my fault? I know I get the blame a lot, as well as blamed for being unnecessarily offensive, but really... I'm harmless. Mostly.

Mostly harmless? Now isn't that just like an earthman?

Thanks for the e-mail address.
Done and submitted.

Trigger was pretty good, I think that this flash turned out pretty good. That usually means it sucked...but that's ok.

We have 10 entries so far, and one pending. That's pretty good for a Friday.

Well, as usual my weekend is totally swamped. Probably won't have time to flash until Sunday, and even then it will be pretty tight, but I will try my best. I wanted to participate on Notebored last week but I never had the free time.

We have 20 so far. We need about 10 more to make MCameron work her behind off posting them! *grin*

Thanks, Mel for being willing to prime this challenge!

If I can squeeze in a few hours tonight, I'll attempt it. But, if I do take up the challenge, I'll have to self-DQ because I won't be around next week -- meaning I won't be able to crit other stories, or choose a trigger should I be lucky enough to take Best Flash.

Posted by mikemunsil (Member # 2109) on :

Go for it anyway. I'll crit on your behalf. And if you win, remember that next week is the 4th of July weekend 500-word challenge, so you would have until the week after to supply a trigger.

Well, here it is, Sunday night, and I've got 1.5 hours to kill ...

*registering at Liberty Hall*

mike I know you're in here. Activate me so's I can write. I'm in a writin' mood.

thanks.

Posted by Troy (Member # 2640) on :

Well, this sucks.

Posted by Troy (Member # 2640) on :

Well, I went ahead and wrote one. Maybe I will get approved in time to submit it.

Posted by Troy (Member # 2640) on :

Oh, now I get how this works. I screwed this up. Well, (submitting)

maybe my flash will still be accepted if I explain that I sent the trigger request by getting the email addy from this thread, then went to the grocery store, made smoothies, and did a bunch of other stuff before actually sitting down to write.

(I was waiting to be accepted at Liberty Hall -- not fully aware that your flash has to be submitted within 90 minutes of getting the trigger.)

Why?

Because sometimes I'm not a careful reader.

Although I do admit it took me almost two hours to write, so I would have blown the 90 minute deadline anyway.

Troy

you're in now. dorry for the delay, and thanks for trying so hard. we'll post yours as DQ this time, but next time I'll be looking for you to win in at least a group division if not the entire thing.

And I'll see if I cannot make the process more clear so that no one else does the same thing.

BTW, next weekends flash, being the 4th of July weekend, will be an entirely different beast. An I'll be submitting a real beast of a trigger!

Troy, ask them to post it as a DQ (disqualified) entry, since it took you more than 90 minutes of pure writing time anyway. That way folks still get to enjoy your story, and you still get the benefit of comments from the readers.

Next week, you'll be up to speed on things-- in more ways than one, what hey?

Susan

I had fun writing it, that's all that matters.

Posted by Troy (Member # 2640) on :

Yep, next week I will do it right. <grin>

The writing period is now closed. There were 31 entries, including 3 DQs. Reading and critiquing starts Monday morning.

Thanks, Mel, for moderating this one!

One more thing, 'cause there are several new people doing this challenge, please read the What To Do Next announcement on Liberty Hall before you start reading/commenting/voting. It will tell you which group you are supposed to critique.
