That's National Novel Writing Month. I have a more concrete plan of what I want to write than last year, and I'm not in the midst of a crazy construction plan or anything. I go by FLRussell over there.

Stupid pesky grad school! This is the second year in a row that I have to be realistic and give up Nano. Better to spend all those words on my thesis or grant proposal.

I'm not technically going to participate, but I have set a goal for myself with this novel to be done by Thanksgiving, and so I'll be sort of overlapping with NaNo. I'll have written more than 50k though, and I'm not starting from scratch like they want you to, which is why I'm not calling it NaNo.
I do want to encourage anyone who might be on the fence about participating that it is a great learning experience, and in my opinion worth giving it a shot. I grew a lot as a writer from doing it, and I'm applying a lot of the same BIC techniques I used to make it through NaNo, now.

I'm in again. I have to buckle down to redeem last year's failed attempt, but I'm headed into it this time with what I think is a much better plan. Or at least I believe it is. The proof will be in the execution of said plan in due course.

I'm in, and for the first time. I'd like to keep working on my WiP, but I think I'll try writing a different story for it so I won't have to research stuff (the WiP is the sequel to my first novel, "Star Sons," which is being polished to death right now). So now I just have to decide, are those fairies or ghosts dancing in the parlor???

6 Days left, well for me it is, Oct 25th right now, 7am. Anyways, I have the plot, several characters and it's set in a fantasy world. The antagonist is a demon warlord who takes over a different realm of existence as his power is greater in that realm, not his own, cliche I know. My protagonist is a rogue who lives on the streets, sees the take over happen and shrugs it off, doesn't care. He's lived through one stupid ruler and another doesn't matter to him. He lives his own life, does his own things, see's thing, doesn't bother helping out.
He hears things from nobles by overhearing them about a rebel faction, that find a stone of great power and the demon warlord is sent back to his own realm. Protagonist doesn't care, continues living his own life.

I haven't been on Hatrack for a while. Haven't been writing for a while, honestly. Life's just been pulling me different ways. But I think it's time to dive back in.
I've tried NaNo twice in the past: the first time I was also trying to write college applications, and the second time, I was trying to make time around the mountains of work that came with choosing the most difficult university I was accepted into.
Needless to say, I haven't succeeded yet. But I'm doing an exchange program this year and the workload is much more flexible here, so I think I should be able to swing it. I'm afraid my idea is going to dip into "chic lit", which I've never liked, but I think I have enough fodder to keep me going. I want to write about the summer of a group of undergraduate women doing various science research projects. Can you tell I'm trying to keep research time to a minimal?

When you get into the site it explains to you quite good naturedly that it's a simple effect of too much traffic. Well, this computer is missing the profile display plug-in so I get to try another.
P.S. My identity over there is FLRussell. Though I guess there's not any reason not to change it to Franc Li. Maybe for next year. If anyone else is using a different name over there, let us know. If you want us to know

Ooh-rah. Now I just gotta get started. BTW, my calculations indicate that to reach 50k words in exactly 30 days, one must churn out 1,666 words per day (more if you want to finish up early). Not only is that manageable, it's downright easy. If you look at the goal piece-by-piece instead of all at once, the novel monster shrinks in size. However, the challenges of writing a novel versus a short story remain.

First day total: 4650+ Whew! I decided to work on the second novel in my series, since I already have so many scenes already planned in my head. So far, so good, but that ten day business trip coming up is gonna eat into my writing time quite badly. Argh!! Still, it's business, so I have to go. Hope you guys had a good first day's writing!

I'm at 1855 for yesterday, I tend to write at night after the kids have gone to bed. I'm trying to take the ideas from some miscellaneous scenes and string them into a story.
When I decided to do this, I broke down the average word count. Since most flashes at LH fall between 800 and 1500 words in 90 minutes on a trigger you have't thought about, I figured it was a realistic goal. No flashes for me this month though.

When I checked today's total for all writers was over 82 M words. Not to shabby for 3 days into it.
You have to use write completely new. You can take the short stories and use them as a guidepost for the novel (which is what I am doing) but previously written stuff is really frowned on.I had to double check that one myself given what I wanted to do.

I was posting to say I crossed the 10k mark in Nanowrimo. Writing much of it longhand is having interesting results. For one thing, I can't just click word count all the time. (I pause and physically tally each page every 2 or 3 pages, when I have a scene break. It varies a lot, especially if there is any dialogue on a page. I had 242 words on one page and 160 some on another.)
Another thing is if I write something and decide I don't quite want to go that direction, I triple star it, but keep the words. In a word processor, if I fix something, the words I fixed are gone. It's interesting, and something my writing workshop lady mentioned that she doesn't like to write in a word processor anymore because it's too easy to get into edit mode.
