Did You Write 01-28-08?

It can be frustrating to face repeated deadlines and fail to make them. It is really frustrating when it is something you really want to work on. These notes are deadlines to aim for, to get something written during the week so one can brag about it here. Writing can be something new, of course, world building, editing, especially someone else's work, poultry, articles, etc.
AS for me, life got in the way again. I hate it when that happens. My Sisterinlaw went in for an examination for stomach problems. It turned out to be pancreatic cancer. It is early in the problem, but not as early as they would like it to be. She went to a specialist surgeon for this problem today and I have not heard any news yet.
Because of this, I wrote yesterday's story idea in the morning, when I normally would write on my stories, and, after doing some woodworking, I went to her house and spent time with my brother. Because of that, I did no writing this week.

I am running on schedule this month on my story ideas. I never know how long a story idea is going to be. Yesterday, I chose a story idea that was to be short, and it ended up three pages long. One and a half pages is fairly normal. three pages is long. Earlier this week, I did two stories that were around one page long.
Next month might be a bit more crazy so I may have to adjust how I do things. I may have to write my story ideas in the morning from work before I start work. That is nowhere near as fun to do.

ON the woodworking front, I am near the point where I can start detailing a fairy I am carving. She was my main concentration this weekend. If you squint, you can even imagine it a woman. If you close your eyes, she will even be beautiful, or a horse, or whatever else you imagine...... I chose to carve fairies because I was able to carve beautiful women and not look like a leacher. My fairies are in two toned green tights, have large butterfly wings and are never standing. The one I am working on now is sitting on the "ground" and holding herself up with one hand, and holding a flower in the other.
I am still working on the finish on my bird bowls. I fit them in afternoons when I have some time. I have a lot of work to do on them before I can even consider painting the attached carvings, then will have an equal amount of work to do after they are painted.
I do like seeing the results I am getting now. If things really go good, I could finish the fairy before the end of next month. I have to decide on the base. I am thinking of a mushroom, which I can make on the lathe.

To turn this into a story, I picture someone creating something, possibly creating a city, or a government, or a palace, or just some art. There are problems happening that have to be dealt with, but he is comfortable in his schedule. If a palace or city, there could be an erupting volcano nearby, or heavy earthquakes. the work itself is done well and these don't hurt the problem too badly, an annoyance.
It could be that it is government or a society he is creating, He has gathered people together and am teaching them to be civilized, to be able to live together under his rules. I picture him a religious leader. The people are learning, changing, becoming the kind of people he wants them to be. There are tribes and creatures around that are causing problems to his community, but the community is developing the way he envisions it. Being old, he knows his life span is nearly over. he wants them to be independent of him when his time comes, and they are well on their way.

As to the question of the day, I must admit that no, I did not write.

Did you write?

Did I write? Yes. Did I write as much I want to/should have? No.

Yes, I did hammer out several thousand words, but they were all for a dull story I have to write for my class.

Rough week, rstegman. Sorry to hear about your sis-in-law.

As for me, I didn't write. I had a hectic week--my hubby started working at home and we had to hustle to clear out the house (see this thread on how messy my house is) and set up a home office for him. Gosh, about 4 trips to the dump and various recycling places. He now has a wonderful office, but now I'm stuck on the couch amidst the piles of stuff that has yet to be cleared. Hopefully I'll get my own desk set up in there soon.

I did write a little bit over the weekend. 2k words for a Hatrack lash challenge.

[aside] Want to join the challenge? Check this thread out. Deadline is Feb 20, I think. [/aside]

What I really _should_ be doing is punching out my WotFC entry. I tried rewriting a story by putting in magic--just couldn't do it. It would require reworking the entire thing and it just didn't feel right--the whole meaning of the story would be robbed by the effect. So I trashed it and started working on a sci fi story I'd had on ice for a long time. Riskier, this path, since I struggle much more with sci fi than with fantasy, but I really like this story and I hope I can make it work.

Again, web development / design work for my customers took center stage. However...I tightened up one of my new SF short storis over the weekend, and sent it out to a magazine yesterday. Now is the time on Sprockets where we dance.

S!
S!...C!

Yes. Didn't meet my goals, but not too far off.

Nope. Lingering cold and congestion...plus a dearth of fresh ideas. Once I clear up this congestion, though, I may jumpstart things in some way...

I was getting excited about some research and then got deflated on it. I think my writing pursuits are going to have to stay secret from my husband from now on. He doesn't mean to discourage me, he just has a different way of thinking from me and has different ideas on what would be cool.

A woman needs a room of her own, in the head as much as in the building.
